Coming Soon…The Good Ol’ Days!

[2009-02-25 @ 11:10 AM PST] The new blogs are UP NOW! blogs.secondlife.com (note the extra “s”, the singular will also redirect to the new blogs soon).

[11 AM PST] WE’RE SO CLOSE!

[8 AM PST] Pardon the mess, it’s temporary. We’re upgrading to our new blogs! Stay tuned… 🙂 -Torley

UPDATE – Due to some last minute technical naughtiness, the launch of the new blogs has been delayed to early next week.

I’m disappointed about the delay of course, as I can’t wait to get started blogging in earnest.  If you are disappointed as well, I apologize.  But you know the old saying:  When life gives you lemmings, make lemmingade! And so without further ado…

Welcome to BLUE’S TOLD-YOU-SO COMPETITION where you can turn snark into valuable prizes!  The game is simple.  Just come up with the ultimate told-you-so to go with any event, whether it’s the delay of the new blogs, McCain losing the election, or your boyfriend getting towed for parking in a handicapped spot…it’s up to you.  I’ll even get you started with an example:

Yoz:  Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue:  Told ya we shouldn’t be using that Commodore64.

The best comeback wins one lucky resident a dream date with me, your pal Blue, to an exciting inworld location as part of my SL Travel Blog.  Yes you heard right.  Immortalized…on a BLOG.  How can you resist?  Just write your comeback on a notecard with the title TOLD YOU SO and drop a copy on me inworld.   Even if you don’t win, a witty dis is its own reward!

The Second Life Blog was once a place where the Lindens talked casually with you about policy, their projects, recent news, the future of SL, etc.  Residents regularly told us that they loved having access to such broad insight into the company and frequent communication with the full range of Lindens.  And Lindens loved the ongoing dialog with residents.

Over time however, as more Lindens came to participate, the blog got a bit manic. Some of you complained that reports of temporary performance issues would eclipse larger conversations related to long term plans and features while others believed that tutorials and opinion pieces were distracting them from the hard news of inworld issues they needed to know about in order to run their businesses.

In other words, we outgrew our single channel blog.  It was no longer serving people’s individual needs. Perhaps worse was that the signal to noise ratio in comments had gotten bad enough that Lindens weren’t able to depend on them as a way to clearly hear the range of needs and desires of the community.  As such we had to limit blog participation to a smaller number of Lindens on certain types of topics and move extended discussion to the forums.

We knew it was important to get back to using the blog as a key means of constructive two way conversation with the community, so we put together a shopping list of must-haves for a new blog suite which included…

  • Individual channels of communication for each subject
  • Numerous means of accessing channels (including RSS and email subscription)
  • Discussion format sub-blogs for extended conversations with threading, voting etc…
  • Private sub-blogs for communities working in Second Life (like educators and Solution Providers)

After comparing options, we believe we’ve found one that will best suit our ongoing needs. We expect that it will allow us to get back to the days when any and all Lindens could participate freely and hope that it will provide a convenient way for you to engage us on a wide variety of topics.

So we hope that you’ll join us here, on Thursday the 19th of February, for the launch of a whole new Second Life Blog, where it will be the good ol’ days all over again!

See you then,
-Blue

Ummm, isn’t that pretty much what you had with the Forums, before you turned your backs on them? Glad to hear of new channels of communication, but I still think actually using the Forums and maintaining them would be better.

  2. Blue says:

New, more functional forums are next 🙂

  3. In before 99 comments bitching about how out-of-touch the Lindens have become and why can they fix this, that or the other . . .

  4. Catten Carter says:

Oh great – Will the current status “blog” be incorperated into the new one?

  5. Blue says:

There are currently no plans to merge http://status.secondlifegrid.net/ into the new blogs as status updates don’t warrant the kind of extended discussions we hope to encourage with new blog software.

  6. Viorel says:

    Thank you Blue.

I hope this means Torley will be visible again.

With OI tutorials replaced by a more simple HI w/”no brainer” HUDs, people will depend on the videos even more.

  7. Blue says:

Yep, Torley will be a part of a special sub-blog that will not only Amplify Your Awesome™, it will PowUP even you Power Users!

And you’re right about the new user experience needing some TLC…which is why LL is working with Big Spaceship on a better way http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/11/03/transforming-the-second-life-experience/

  8. Ana Lutetia says:

    *clap clap clap clap*

  9. annotoole says:

Hey you are supposed to just spring these things on us without any warning ya know! Maximizes the emotional impact 😛

Oh wait that causes a bad SNR. nm.

    Looking forward to it.

And looking forward to hearing more about what it is actually that Big Spaceship is doing for us. Like exactly what.

  10. Garn Conover says:

woot! Hey Blue I still waiting for grid status indicators to be updated and actually used tho.. I still think there should be a colour indicator beside the grid status link so u click for more info.. also something better on the login screen 😀 (open/closed/logins restricted/technical difficulties) and bring back the links! ^_^

  11. Viorel says:

Oh I missed the previous blog post. Thanks again Blue.

It sounds very interesting to say the least. I know you all have been working hard on it. I have a ton of questions but I’ll hold off & look forward to next week.

  12. Torley says:

Hay I’ll be back liek Blue said. Yeah. I’ll be representin’ with mah Doc Team homies. Thanx for the interest, I appreciate it. STAY TUNED.

  13. Ah Cool i miss those day 😛

  14. @Torley Mah Homies Miss Ya 😛

  15. Locke Traveler says:

I’d like to request that a “status” channel be part of the blog, that will effectively mirror the more reliable http://status.secondlifegrid.net/, but provide a secondary outlet for the news and information we need, plus provide a verifiable record intertwined with the more reliable conversations. Also, the commentary on such status updates, although it would need severe moderation, would shed light on the particular resident experience as it relates to that specific status error or downtime, especially a partial one. This may provide insight that the JIRA cannot.

  16. I hope the new blog format will have threaded commenting a la LiveJournal, so readers of comments can more easily skip the sidebar topics and flamewars that are a feature of the forums, without having to slog through 50+ pages of irrelevance. The recent land-cutting forum thread was a major pain to get through and if there were LJ-style threading, it would have been MUCH easier for me to have seen who replied to my comments in the thread and avoided a whole bunch of comments that were directed at other commenters, most of whom were flaming one another. (And yes, I read every single comment in that thread — all 66 pages of them.)

  17. Kahiro Watanabe says:

Yes, it would be nice to see you back here again Torley.

Now that we are talking about blog re-design, don’t you think (Lindens) that is time to improve the Second Life Forums?

What about BBCode? Scripting Tips and Scripting Library really needs it.

  18. What about the lengthy archive of current blog posts, will those be preserved? There’s quite a lot of infomration and history there, it would be a shame to lose it.

  19. Marianne McCann says:

Can’t wait to see it, but really interested to see what’s down the pipeline for the forums

  20. Excellent news! I can’t wait for the redesign! Great post- Valentine’s gift! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

  21. Pingback: Dusan Writer’s Metaverse » Choose Your Channel: Linden Lab Blog Changes and Finding Your Love

  22. @12 I can’t wait to have you back in the big picture. You really helped push the whole blog conversion over to wordpress. The old individual blogs from before were often not well integrated within a metablog and some were not even known about.

@18 I hope that old blog posts are imported and perhaps retain their original URL’s so external sites linking to them are not broken.

  23. Tex Nasworthy says:

Good news to see Torley making a come back!

But here’s the bigger question for Torley. Will there be more videos of you wearing the watermelon pants?

  24. Linnie says:

@6 I agree totally with you, it will be great to have Torley’s turorials visable again, i think he has been a bit lazy when he was hidden away *stick her tongue out at @12 with a big grin*

  25. WoooOOOOT Jumps up & Down Clapping,, Very Kewl Blue! I for one can’t wait. Hugss & welcome back Torley, aye we ALL totally missed you, & passes out plenty of yummie watermelon to everyone!

  26. Digital Digital says:

Great news! I really can’t wait to see the new re design this will be so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Blue says:

Oh yes…old blog will be archived as part of the new blog, also it will be possible to create extended “discussions” that are threaded, and as per Garn’s suggestion I am hoping to create a permanent “Orange Level Lag Alert” although you’ll need to take your shoes off to log in. It’s for your own safety after all!

Oh and yeah, links to featured blog posts on login screen is something we’re looking at. I miss those too.

  28. Catten Carter says:

A lot of the status reports might not warrent discussions, but almost every post made there about either RC, server upgrades or rolling restarts have a forum extension, so some communication between lindens and residents happen there.

  29. /me wipes a tear from her eyes and reminisces about the time when you could buy a cutout dog, a house; land to put them on, and still have change from 10L.

Wide-eyed newbies listen, breathless, as I tell them of a Golden Age when the Lindens walked among us and spoke with us as our Brethren. Then one newbie, bolder than the rest, will rise up and pour scorn on my words, and they will all leave, jeering at me for a confused old woman.

    Woohoo! Way to go!

  30. Ciaran Laval says:

Blue will your travel blog be part of this too? Are you still planning to do that?

I know you guys are looking forward to the launch of this so I hope it works out well.

  31. Simon Kline says:

Those of you asking about the grid status page may be interested in my Grid Watch tool! It’ll tell you in world when there’s an issue with SL and so you know when not to rez or buy things.

Find out more at http://klinelabs.com/gridwatch.php if you like what you read, get one FREE at my store at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Travitown/145/99/22

  32. Stryker Jenkins says:

    Great news guys…

One little request though… Is it at all possible to add a clock to the website / blogs as well. You know, for easy reference between the times named in blog post and the inworld time…
I know I have been asking for this for a long time, but still

  33. What’s going to happen to the existing vBulletin forum?

Will this blog change include the “Yahoo Answers style” forum mentioned in the VTeam blog?

  34. What software has been selected?

  35. What can I say but HOORAH? 🙂 Good work on making this happening. I know it’s hard to beat Dreamhost’s blog in keeping a thriving community in touch with the company’s employees, in a very funny way, but, well, you’re definitely making good steps towards that 🙂

  36. Novis Dyrssen says:

So, how will this work? Do we actually have to browse different subblogs to find all those entries? Because I for one would prefer to have the option of seeing all new posts on one single page.

Aside from that – YAY! 😀

  37. Torley says:

(I’m helping Blue answer what I can and can definitely answer.)

@Francesca: Lament not, for signs of a new Golden Age come to fruition. Lindens still walk amongst our people; sightings & stories are to be rejoiced in and shared. Ye must have faith.

@Ciaran: Blue’s Eureka! adventures will be extended and expanded in fantabulicious ways, yes! I personally look forward to more because they make it easier for me to discover kewl places in SL.

@SuezanneC: From my vantage on the Doc Team, there’s valuable info in the old forums (related: KB articles that link to this blog), so like the blog, we’ll need to preserve this as we transition. Details to come later.

@Gwyneth: Dreamhost’s blog is a big inspiration to me (so’s their newsletter). I’ve been a customer of many Net companies I’ve suggested we (LL) can learn from. This includes some startups making great conversational usage of Twitter, so if that pans out, you’ll see SecondLife on Twitter be more interactive.

  38. @37 Yay, Torley!!! 🙂

  39. This sounds like wonderful news. It’s good to see that despite the lagging economy that Second Life is still being supported. So much else is falling by the wayside these days.

  40. Ceera Murakami says:

Thank you, Blue. I will most certainly be happy to see the Forums finally getting a facelift. Hopefully regaining the ability to format posts, with BB Code or HTML. That has been allowed to languish, un-fixed, for far too long, and no other forum that I participate in has ever seemed to have he least bit of difficulty with offering a fully-functional BB Code formatting, or some equivalent.

As for the new blog format, could we at least have a status box on the new blog’s main page, so any issues in the grid status reports are reflected there? What I would prefer is some sort of “communications central”, where at a glance I can see the headlines for the grid status as well as the blogs on various topics in their various threads. Then I could click deeper to actually read the articles. And preferably, this would be possible simply by going to a single URL, and would not require each individual user to be capable of, or interested in, setting up a custom RSS feed page to accomplish this simple central index of hot topics.

  41. Qie says:

Cool. Very eager for that Forums update, and glad to see this step on that path.

I guess four days isn’t too long to wait for details of the new blog, but like SuezanneC, I’m eager to learn what engine will be under the hood, or if there’s already some internal documentation drafted.

(Details such as: OpenID. That’s one thing WordPress got kinda right, or at least seems to be attempting.)

  42. Ewan Mureaux says:

The last week or two there has been a real change of feeling that I’ve noticed, it’s like SL got fun again. Thanks for extending dialogue with residents and getting away from this “some lindens are made of glass don’t break them by talking to them” thing that people may have thought was the case in the past.

Every Linden that I’ve come into contact with recently has been outstanding, professional and friendly (not saying you were all bad before) but its like “the lab” has a smile on its face now if that makes sense?

Big thank you for the valentine hunt too and thanks for Mia tolerating our IM’s and snapshots of finding golden hearts! Just another example of SL being fun again.

    Roll on new blog!

  43. Jazzman Jibilla says:

Bring it on. The blog had become irrelevant to most residents. Comments open again like this is a good idea too, sure there are always the off subject whiners, but it fostered a better sense of community than allowing a few linked in blogs to comment, or pushing us off to the official forum.

  44. Lindal Kidd says:

    1 User Cheered.

I have to give kudos to the team for several of the recent improvements. Philip’s maps, the new policies on adfarms and land cutting, the server improvements…and now this.

LL is definitely on a roll, these last couple of months. Keep up the good work!

  45. TundraFire Nightfire says:

    Cool!

  46. Jessi Graves says:

I wish it wouldn’t have taken this long to realize that users want the old blog, but nonetheless, I am excited that it’s coming back. I’ll be able to go to the main SL blog, for information I can use (rather then the promotional, useless crap that’s been posted since they “improved” the blog), rather then a side informational stream, or resident blog.

  47. arwynquandry says:

Will there be a Teen sub-category? I know the whole TSL community would appreciate any attention.

  48. Torley says:

@Jessi: I’ll confirm our realization was actually much shorter. But ideas and actions are two very different (albeit interconnected) things, and the new blog’s content will involve a diversity of Lindens from diff. teams across the company. So it has and will take continued coordination; Blue’s been a BIG (dare I say “BIG BLUE”) help and motivation.

You should’ve seen me in meetings, I was like, “WHERE’S THE NEW BLOG ALREADY!? I’m like HOOVER DAM (without Megatron) ready to burst!” Meaning: lots of tips ‘n’ tricks to share on the new blog, practical advice to make your Second Life better.

@Ewan: Mia told me about your awesome VDay’s stories. Rawk on. What a gentleman you are.

“Like buses… sometimes you get two at a time.”

  49. Jessi Graves says:

@Torley I never actually watched your videos, or anything, but I respected that you helped people, and seemed atypical of regular Linden staff, so that made you stand out (other then the blinding colour scheme). So it’ll be good that you’ll be posting here again with your helpful videos and lovely, unfiltered commentary. I’ll just be damn happy to have the blog back~

  50. SexySteven Morrisey says:

Hooray! I can’t wait to get the “old” blog back… especially now that every weekend it seems we have overloaded servers that cause consistent teleport, inventory, and transaction problems and make the SL experience totally miserable!!! ;-P

  51. Aminom Marvin says:

This seems like a positive step. Since around October the communication between LL and its customers seems to have been cut off. We’ll have to wait for the implimentation of the new communication tools to see if this will indeed give us what is needed, and promised.

  52. Pingback: LL To Change how They Blogged Web - SLUniverse Forums

  53. Ivana Pawlowski says:

How about making the new blog and more importantly the status one available easily in SL so it gets even more visibility

  54. Blue says:

@28 Catten One of the new channels will be Technology where the tech Lindens can discuss new releases, restarts, etc. Folks have repeatedly told us that they very much appreciate getting a good look under the hood with Lindens when there are problems or updates so we’re hoping the new blog helps us to do that better.

@30 Ciaran Yeah, I’m very excited to get to work on the Travel Blog! Like Torley, I’m chomping at the bit to launch….Eureka will start of a bit slow, but I’ll be ramping it up into a resource of not just cool places inworld, but of exceptional resident explorers, and other resources for intrepid explorers.

@35 Gwyn, yeah the Dreamhost guys rock…I don’t have a hosted page anymore, but I still have their newsletter sent to me 🙂

Happy Valentine’s day everyone! Very much enjoyed hanging out with you on Isle of View ❤

  55. Torley says:

@Jessi: That’s very nice of you. I hope in the future, what I do won’t seem so atypical… as one of my fave things in the WORLD is to energize fellow Lindens & Residents to share their Second Life passions.

@Aminom: I should also EMPHASIZE concurrent to all this, various Lindens continue to hold inworld Office Hours where we discuss LIVE! Avatar-to-avatar, using SL itself.

If you attend any sessions and find them useful and/or fun, please let the Lindens hosting them know, it REALLY makes a difference, and is pretty much why I’ve continued to do them — currently with Doc Team. (Some Office Hours were cancelled out of lack of perceived interest.) On a broader stroke, YOU letting US know what you enjoy about the new blogs will enlighten us to provide more of a given topic/subject for your benefit.

  56. Yukinoroh Kamachi says:

I’d be glad if you make a communication a channel like “fix these damn one year old highly-voted bugs that broke content” (pingin Andrew for SVC-2013 here)

  57. Noisey Lane says:

Signal and I say welcome back 😛

  58. Catten Carter says:

@54 Cool Blue! Was what I hoped for 🙂

  59. Sandor Balczo says:

I am really happy the SL Blog is actually coming back to the old format, based on news-comments-more news. The censored version really looked like a corporate bulletin board and the forums are dispersive.

I hope this shift backwards will help revive a relationship gone slightly anemic.

    Sandor 🙂

  60. Deira Llanfair says:

    I’m agog with anticipation!

    Hi Torley 🙂

  61. Koinup Burt says:

Blue, Torley can’t wait to see the new great blog….

as you know guys discovering, enjoying and having fun in new places it became one of the most exciting things you can have in world..
so I hope you will put great efforts in the “eureka” tips for travels blog (as in the other ventures, obviously)

I hope also you will continue to use and take benefit from the important resources already existing out there as Flickr, the Koinup Places and many other community efforts…

Good Luck for the new venture!

  62. jl prudhomme says:

I rather hope that someone will check grammar, spelling and word usage before stuff gets posted.

It’s a shame that some of you don’t know the difference between “its” and “it’s” and “lay” and “lie.”

Or you rely on uber-techie words to obfuscate your message.

Kinda glaring for presumably educated pple …

  63. jl prudhomme says:

and while I’m posting, I wonder how much you guys actually value us ancient, craggy ones (in terms of SL life, that is) …

  64. Catherine Cotton says:

🙂 well this just sounds lovely Blue and Torley. Best of luck to you and other fellow Lindens.

    Happy Day 🙂

  65. Amethyst Rosencrans says:

Will we ever be able to comment on the status blog? Will most of the current blog posts continue to be “comments closed” posts? I personally miss the days when we used to be able to comment on things… communication has been slowly being cut down. We can only really comment on things on the forums and the Lindens don’t seem to read that… or if they do it gets mainly ignored. I really hope it goes back to the openness of the past. Lindens seem to be increasingly existing within a “bubble.”

  66. The initiative seems wonderful.
Certainly with the hope for being an improvement in terms of productivity and effectiveness 🙂

  67. Travis Lambert says:

If it works out as intended, this sounds like a fantastic step in the right direction! 🙂

  68. Thasius Vaher says:

While I LOVE the fact that Linden Labs is attempt to recover some public relations! Anything at the moment that isn’t relating to basic platform stability is going to fall mostly on deaf ears. A new blog is fantastic but what would be nice is some straight up answers regarding the stability of the grid and what’s going to be done to sort it. Too many no committal vague replies and no acceptance of responsibility. Everyone in the grid knows of the issues with “lag” as we know it and no, I don’t mean low FPS or high pings, I mean servers being over loaded. As a fellow community member rightly stated, Linden Labs seems to be within a ‘bubble’. I hope this blog goes some way to returning to the good old days when the staff were here to help the community not keep the cash rolling in.

  69. Puppet Shepherd says:

Goodness, what is going on around here? First you sent Moles to beautify the mainland, then you cleaned up the adfarming mess, and now you’re redoing the blog? And the FORUMS are next? Wow, before I know it, Lindens will be walking among us like commoners! People told me that used to happen once upon a time long ago – I thought perhaps they were getting senile. 🙂

I’m starting to think you guys way up there at the top might actually care about us little folk. That makes me want to give a round of doggie kisses! Please, keep it coming! Don’t break my puppy heart!

  70. AkabeForuM says:

Can’t wait to see it, but really interested to see what’s down the pipeline for the forums

    AkabeForum

  71. Evelyn Ponnier says:

Having the blog back on the login screen is going to be great for SL.

Before I was a newbie, I had no idea of how Second Life worked. When I signed up I had accidentaly signed up through the Brazil signup page thinking that was the closest server to my RL home. Upon rezzing, I was utterly confused by the fact that, even though the sign up page was in English, the entire world was in Portuguese!

Getting out of the old Orientation Island was hard enough. Imagine having to learn everything from pictures on billboards in a foreign language. Somehow I escaped into the real SL world.

Still not knowing how this ‘3D game’ worked I logged out.

The next time the veiwer started, there was this link on the screen: “Torley’s Tip of the Week”. I watched, I learned and I was reborn…

The blog on the login page was my saving grace. It helped me also see that there was a whole interactive community out there. Soon I had the ritual of always reading all the posts before logging in.

Since I was this close to forgetting SL all together after my first frustrating three hours, I’m glad for all residents that it is going to be back there.

To be honest, I wouldn’t have bothered to find it any other way.

  72. Odin Paulino says:

Fantastic news! Hope it will live up to our expectations. Specially liked the position of the sublogs.
By the way – a ran a bet with som friends: Are the number that use SL (how many is it today?) the the numbers of avatars og rl-persons behind?

  73. Erika Mahana says:

    @ Salesteam Lindens

It may not be the right place to drop but here I go.

Why don’t you give SL a boost by offering free not transferable land spaces to you’re citizens? You even can restrict the size and make it so that it will disappear after 30 days non use. What you get will be a lot of happy users who gonna BUY and SPEND + more user satisfaction 🙂

  74. Ener Hax says:

what does linden consider a “power user”? i would consider myself one since i have 12 sims and “evangelise” on sl at conferences as a speaker and blog like mad. good luck and i hope it helps people feel more connected (like me, cuz i feel a bit taken for granted . . waaaah).

*gets out tiny violin but then gets distracted by wondering if said tiny violin bow would work as an olive pick* =D

  75. Paddy Wright says:

At long last!! This feels more like sl in the good old boom days. It will be a joy to see Torley & Co bring some fun back into SL.

  76. Torley says:

@Thasius: Have you seen FJ Linden’s updates, which go into technical details? http://blog.secondlife.com/author/frankambrose/ I hope they’re helpful to you.

@Puppet: I’m glad you care! There are Lindens who walk amongst our Residents regularly. (Including when they’re not working.) I’m one of them, and I know it isn’t publicized as much as it could or should be. So let’s change that soon, show more FAMILIAR LINDEN FACES. I encourage my colleagues to get inworld for some fresh virtual air. Actually being in Second Life is one of (if not the #1 priority) my top joys & responsibilities.

Ongoing theme you’ll see from me: it’s important to not just do something, but share what you’ve done. Otherwise, no one’s gonna know.

@Evelyn: Great story… and happy to know my tips have made a positive difference. I remember when they began as a small side project… well, I’ve got a great tale coming up on the new blogs. I collect stories like yours to share ’round the offices, your firsthand impressions are important.

@Ener: I’ve liquid definitions, but often, I find anyone with a voracious appetite to digest knowledge and apply the energy from it… soon becomes a POWAH USAH. I remember when Chage McCoy first showed me the Debug menu (also formerly Client, now Advanced) way back, and it’s all been OMG from there.

(Musical parallel to this: Prodigy’s new album, which is said to return to their much-beloved “old skool rave” sound while having the “armor” that only comes with experience… I love connections…)

  79. Jayden Beresford says:

I left SL for two reasons.

    1. The criminal price gouging of OpenSpace regions by Jack Linden

    2. The fracturing of the blog, a single place to get the information you needed, into a million hidden places by the innefectual Katt Linden.

With the blog coming back you are half way there to regaining me as a customer. Are you up to it?

Your choice Linden Lab… allow these people like Jack and Katt to drive away the customers or actually listen to them.

  80. youve really learned your lessons havent you?

Kewl I followed all the linkage guess what? My “epsonality” is the Artisan TM 700. Neato on the “Big Spaceship” (LL words not mine lol) can’t wait for them to beam us all to this new global all-in-one (just like many of the epson printers I just saw) blaugh.

I give this two spaceshops and a few aliens. (yes I meant spaceshops)

  82. Roofus says:

So did you guys finally realized that when you stopped catering to the users of SecondLife and only to the businesses that when we left there’d be no reason for the businesses to be here?

Bout time you brought a human face back to LL and started listening to your REAL customers.

  83. Ener Hax says:

@ a few peeps up there: i was hurt too by the OS debacle (set us back several months and lost some pretty places) BUT Linden Lab is the leader in virtual worlds. they could be the 3D web, imo, and as such – they don’t have anyone to follow. while i would have liked to see LL just come out and say “oops” on the OS stuff rather than spin it (just my perspective)

they will make mistakes and there may be some heartache (if it wasn’t so promising and so good – then there would be nothing to get upset about)

it’s pretty awesome to have this opportunity to be creative in such an awesome way, despite a few bumps in the road, and to also have a mechanism to do freelance work (ie, land business in my case)

so all-in-all, you have the Official Ener Stamp of Approval and I am certain there will be moment of enerchy again, but all growing enterprises have them when in uncharted territory.

hats off to all you Lindens and your sincere and passionate drive to improve SL. thanks you from one of the little people =D

  84. e-okul says:

What about the lengthy archive of current blog posts, will those be preserved? There’s quite a lot of infomration and history there, it would be a shame to lose it.

  85. Frans says:

    Double thumbs up! 🙂
I’m looking forward to a new golden age. 😀

  86. shockwave yareach says:

It is a start. Let’s see if your company is willing to do more than simply roll back the isolationist practices put in place by she whose name began with K. Good communications is fine, if you hear what we tell you and act upon it.

  87. Jossy Joffe says:

    Hear, hear !!! Shockwave!

  88. oh good! the blogging is back..hope to be hearing more from the company to get a better idea of what’s taking place in and around sl/lindens.

  89. Luke Termagant says:

Another crap coming from the Lab. Who cares about new blog format when you do everything to opress critical voices?

On September and October last year I have warned that residents will experience severe contraction of the so called SL economy by February and we will hear Lindens calling for “defragmentation” (closing unprofitable servers/ sims where residents land holdings drop by more than 50%). As private land scanners show, Linden Lab due to its endless incompetence has lost around 5,000 sims in previous few months. Many sims are half-empty. But you are not suppose to know that. Your only right is to pay and keep your mouth shut. This is the real reason why the SL land statistics is not being currently published. But the operation to cover this fiasco is already running – this time the scapegoat is a land-cutter. From time to time public dissatisfaction with LLs actions is transfered against casino owners, financial services owners, open sim owners, advertising agencies owners and many other naive individuals who decided to build predictable businesses on a totally unpredictable SL platform.
Real problems are not being solved. The real nighmare is that Linden Lab currently decides land price control. If they start dictating residents how much they can charge for their land, I am out. I have no intention to support private enterprise behaving like communist government.

Linden Lab interferes too much and messes with our intentions. It is our world and our imagination.

  90. Good morning, just woke up, and while it’s a new day, it appears to be the same old blog that I’m seeing.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

  91. RichD Tomsen says:

Nope SuezanneC… Your looking in the right place, its not here…. not too much a surprise since its only 9am in “The Lab”. still getting their morning coffee, and catching up on email. lets hope the restarts didn’t divert resources away from the blog too much. Although I think we would rather start seeing a stable, better performing grid anyway.

  92. Finnella Flanagan says:

Thanks for some good news. I checked the old blog daily; the new blog, never. So I’m looking forward to the new/old format. Here’s hoping for more positive changes this year!

  93. Blue says:

Oh and for those suggesting that we should put the status blog into these new blogs…

Yoz pointed out to me that the status blog is kept entirely separate from everything else so that if everything else goes down, the status page isn’t affected and you can find out what’s going on.

Which is a pretty good plan 🙂

    “Coming Soon…The Good Ol’ Days!
Friday, February 13th, 2009 at 5:04 PM by: Blue

Even if you don’t win, a witty dis is its own reward!”

Over the past 5 years I HAVE “Told you so” so many times that Blue shouldn’t just be out on a date with me Blue should be my personal assistant!

  95. Ener Hax says:

ha, see I told you so earlier today on the new blogs, but now you’ll have to wait and see . . .

    =D

  96. Adam Spark says:

Like at least one previous poster, I’d like to see the status page merged with the blog once again.

Threads wont always garner a lot of the type of discussion a blog encourages. It happens. I don’t see that as a good reason to force us to go to multiple sources to get ALL the information.

  97. RichD Tomsen says:

Heres one: The miss-communication “I told you so”

BLUE: “Hay everyone, I’m so excited about the new blog, its Thursday, lets get it out to the people like we promised”

    EVERYONE: “What new Blog???”

Good luck blue, remember this one important management tool. Have a meeting, its the practical alternative to work. keep up the good work blue it will eventually all come together.

  98. Blue says:

    LOL Cat 😀

  99. Awesome news. Looking forward to the new setup..

  100. Tabliopa Underwood says:

    ooo! look yellow thingys

I told you God wasnt a myth you unbelievers, God does love us and answers our prayers =)

    ~o~

Is good to hear about the new blogs and the newstyle forums to come. When the new forums do come can we have a ‘Told You So’ section so that when we just having a bad hair day we can go there instead of to the ‘Resident Answers’ section and get in other ppls way.

And can we still have a Residents Answers in the forums please for general stuff because I think is really important that we are able to ask each other about stuff and get a quick answer even if it has been asked a zillion times before by other people. Thx =)

  101. Blue says:

@102 Tabilopa, I like the TOLD YOU SO forum idea 😀

And as to Resident Answers, we’re looking at a way to do that in more of a Yahoo Answers style so that good answers rise to the top, etc. More on that a bit later!

  102. UPDATE: “The technical glitch which allowed residents to actually find what they were looking for is nearly fixed, thus allowing for the high level of obfuscation people have come to expect from Linden Lab.” said a Linden who’s name appeared to be “(Loading…)”

More details can be found on the new blog, which of course nobody can get to yet. 😛

  103. Frans says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: Told ya we shouldn’t be writing our own blog software.

  104. Marziah Masala says:

Yoz: Hey, Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: I told ya the guy in engineering with a Scottish accent wasn’t *really* a miracle worker who could get things done in one fifth the time he said he needed.

  105. Yoz: Hey, Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: I told you that we shouldn’t ship Beta software.
We ought to have it working first as an official release in the back ground and communicate to the world it as ‘almost ready’ (also an old management hoax) 🙂

  106. Anny Helsinki says:

Yoz: Hey, Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: told ya we arent Airbus, we are Boeing.

  107. Sascha says:

Yoz: Hey, Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

BLue: Yeah then it is really like in the gold old days…

  108. Steve Steed says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: Told ya we shouldn’t be using that Abacus.

  109. eyerocker says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

    Blue: its wednesday already?

  110. Alisha says:

Blue: I told ya we would have fun on our day at the beach.

  111. Dhyana Writer says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: I, TOLD YOU! Why are you repeating me, all I say?

Yoz: Hey Blue, I am repeating what you say.

  112. Talarus Luan says:

Qie brought up a point in the forums (“How is babby formed” thread in RA) that set this mantra off in my mind after reading it:

You all DID get RESIDENT INPUT for all these changes, yes? You DID make some effort to talk to your residents back in the design phase of this new blog’n’forum stuff before you made any decisions, right? Please, PLEASE tell me you didn’t do all this in the vacuum of doing what you all keep promising to do, yet continue to EPIC FAIL over; communicating with your residents about things which end up severely impacting their “SL experience”.

Your communication avenues with your residents are CRITICALLY IMPORTANT; I wish you all would come to understand this better. Messing with them without involving your residents is a recipe for disaster. “But I KNOW what our residents need; I don’t need to talk with them about it!” is a textbook example of the problem.

If not, then I have an “I told you so” scenario for you: all this work will result in more EPIC FAIL, and you’ll lose even more goodwill from your residents (heh; I imagine some folks out there wonder if that is even possible, but.. meh).

  113. Oh my, at least you guys have humor. Love that “told you so” idea.
    GO GO GO Blue! 🙂

  114. Blue says:

The post Talarus is referring to can be found here….
    http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?p=2331262#post2331262

Besides, I TOLD YA we were upgrading the blogs to better facilitate communication with you guys! EPIC WIN FTW +1!!1

@everyone The response to the Told-You-So Competition has been epic as well. Even though I said that I wanted notecards, I’ll include the ones here as they’re great.

@105 Frans, if we were actually writing the new blog software you would’ve won hands down xD

@109 Sascha gets bonus points for working “good old days” in!

  115. Meade Paravane says:

At RL work, we never seem to fail to get some expensive piece of software that nobody knows how to use and doesn’t work very well instead of getting the free/cheap standard thing that works well enough and everybody already knows how to use. Unless it’s something we _must_ use to do our jobs, the new software usually dies of attrition and much grumbling ensues.

Please keep to phpbb or vBulletin or something else that virtually everybody on the internet is already familiar with. Something that’s limited in functionality but is still easy to use and mostly works (like todays forums) is far, Far, FAR better than something nobody knows how to use. Please. Really. I’ll give you a cookie.

  116. Meade Paravane says:

Also, while yer (hopefully) still reading, any chance we can get a top-level link to the status blog on the forums? Right under the current pseudo-forum for “The Official Blog of Linden Lab”? TY!

  117. Blue says:

Will do Meade…It sounds like easy access to the grid status is a concern of many folks here. I’ll be sure to include, at the very least, a link on the top page 🙂

oops, edit: I’ve got blogs on the brain…I’ll add a link to the new blog for sure. Not sure about new forums just yet, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind when we get to that point!

  118. Tabliopa Underwood says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: I told you to leave the bears out of it until after the topping-off ceremony.

  119. Steve Steed says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: Told ya we shouldn’t have hired the local preschool kids from that preschool for the blind.

  120. Yoz: Blue!!! The global economy’s so bad, we can’t give out the Valentine Event Prizes anymore! T_T
Blue: Told’ya Ginko Bank isn’t worth investing in. 😛

(The preceding is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to real events that may exist is merely a coincidence. =^_^=)

  121. Neuro Linden says:

@106 Marziah: “Blue: I told ya the guy in engineering with a Scottish accent wasn’t *really* a miracle worker who could get things done in one fifth the time he said he needed.”

Hey, I resemble that remark, says the sole Scotsman in Engineering 🙂

  122. Blue says:

@106 Marziah he’s really done wonders with the retrofit to the warp core!

  123. Steve Steed says:

    OK one more lol..

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: Told ya we shouldn’t have hired the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS.

  124. Blue says:

HAH! Okay, I have to admit to having a personal affinity for Told Ya So’s related to sports teams. As such I need to give @125 Steve some big love and a BLUE’S TOLD YA SO play-at-home BONUS…here goes nothing!…

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: I told ya the Chiefs shouldn’t have bought A-Roid!

  125. Blue says:

    ps….<3 @122 Geneko

  126. Frans says:

“@105 Frans, if we were actually writing the new blog software you would’ve won hands down xD”

    Hahaha

@116, Blue, so you guys are actually done writing it? 😛 😀

    new one.

*Yoz Smacks Blue over the head*

    Blue: What is that for?

Yoz: Told you I would do that when you would make me look bad on the blog again.

  127. oiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  128. Ewan Mureaux says:

    Technical issues?

/me imagines the labs top techs huddled round still looking for the “any key”

  129. Dhyana Writer says:

I love SL regardless every tantrum they make me do, still wonder at how someone can be so creative/talented/intelligent etc to create such platform, and also the residents that do scripts wow, I’m still trying to figure out how the cable telephone works, but I’ll get there…someday LOL
Congrats Lindens you are going to heaven in both worlds. Ignore us when we get ungrateful and complain about everything, and even mention that our money whatever and whatever. You know, its like Dr. Frankenstein; your creations are after you to kill you…rruunnn LOL
No money in the world will buy the fun we have at SL :>)

  130. Steve Steed says:

M Linden: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: Told ya we shouldn’t Have had Steve Steed in the Linden Lab office.

    M Linden: Why?

Blue: He set it on fire!!

M Linden: He sets all stuff on fire.

Blue: Yes I have seen his Snapzilla Pictures and 7 out of 10 Pictures have stuff on fire in them!!

  131. Ener Hax says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: Great . . . next you’ll raffle me off as some prize, like “get a date with Blue”.

  132. GarGraVarr Rau says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: See….. I told you…. They are demostrating again

  133. Cinco Pizzicato says:

One of the things I don’t like about the Official Linden Blog(tm) (singular or plural) is: Stuff on the ‘blog ends up being policy, and the ‘blog is the place where policy is announced. So on one hand, the ‘blog is the policy announcement organ for Linden Labs, and now, on the other hand, it will also be the place for various Lindens to talk about what they’ve been doing, and this great new recipe for brownies they found, and cetera.

So with the Super Duper Monolithic ‘Blog Of Official Policy Seriousness gone, where do we go to learn about stuff like the new land cutting policy?

    BTW:

    Fudge Brownies
    (a/k/a Marcia’s Brownie Recipe)

    1/2 c. margarine or butter
1 pkg (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
    1 2/3 c sugar
    1 1/4 c all purpose flour
    1 tsp vanilla
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
    3 eggs
1 c chopped nuts (if desired)

Heat oven to 350F. Heat margarine and chocolate chips in 3 qt saucepan
stirring constantly, until melted. Beat in remaining ingredients until
smooth; stir in nuts. Spread in greased rectangular pan 13″x9″x2″.

Bake until center is set, about 30 minutes; cool completely. Cut into bars.
    36 brownies.

  134. Panama Marama says:

Yoz: Hey Blue, we have to delay launch due to some technical issues.

Blue: Told ya we shoulda bought a new hamster wheel for the server gerbil.

  135. Blue says:

@131 Dhyana: Old Frankie’s got nothing on you guys ❤

@135 Cinco: MMmmm! There’s definitely room on the new blogs (plural) for brownies and official seriousness, and for those of you who prefer seriousness to nuts, you can have your brownies straight.

    @136 Panama: Gerbil? I wish… http://tr.im/gFBg

  136. actually the commodore 64 is just show. most of our systems at the lab are MOS KIM-1’s.

    Yoz: lol gerbils…

    Emerson: Hippos!

Yoz: Hippos? that’s a great idea. Much more powerful than a gerbil

Blue: I don’t think he is referencing server reliabilty…

Emerson: Told ya that we wouldn’t forget about the hippos… I wanna see the first post of the new blog to be about the LL hippos and what is being done to save them.

Blue shouts: Told ya there was more of those hippo loving residents who would spill over into other posts

Emerson: told ya the “hippos!” issue is not going away…

This was written with humourous intent regrading a very serious issue. More important than blogs or grid reliability…

    Please, think of the hippos.

OK not funny O.o but funny!! 😀
