Knowledge Base Article of the Week #29: Saving Outfits

Hello everybody!  With this week’s introduction of our fantastic new “default” avatars, I’d like to show you how to create some individually packaged avatars of your own.

An outfit in Second Life is a folder that contains everything you need to make your avatar look a certain way; body shape, hair, clothes, attachments, and more.  When you drag an inventory folder onto your avatar, Second Life will automatically replace everything you’re wearing with the contents of the folder; people often use this technique to change clothes or avatar shapes quickly.   It’s also a handy way to save a backup copy of yourself if you want to start experimenting with your look!

To find out more about how to save your own outfits in Second Life, check out this week’s article: Saving Outfits

If you have any questions about the Knowledge Base, or if you’d just like to chat with our friendly Documentation team, you can find us every Friday at 2pm at our office couches in the Beaumont region.  We love to hear your feedback and Second Life stories!

See you there,

Jeremy Linden

  1. Ron Crimson says:

Jeremy! Dude! I DIG those eyes, man 😀

  2. Argent Stonecutter says:

I think you can copy them this way: stick a couple of prim spheres inside your head so they just cover the Linden eyes, and set them to “glow”.

  3. Jeremy Linden says:

That’s exactly right, Argent! The eyes are no secret… just a couple glowing spheres in my eye sockets. If you want a copy of my unique Jeremy Linden tinted glasses too, I’ll be happy to hand some out at office hours today 🙂

  4. You can also put on the new avatar by right-clicking on the folder and choosing Replace Outfit from the popup menu. As someone pointed out in the blog comments to a previous post, that’s safer than dragging; you don’t have to worry about any invisible or wandering prims getting in your way.

Add To Outfit, another choice on that menu, is useful if you have an outfit that’s complete or nearly complete, but you want to leave your usual attachments (Huddles, Mystitool, Chimera, and so forth) in place.

  5. Broccoli Furry says:

Is there a way to remove teh avatar bones so i can make myself more ‘blobby’ ?

  6. rush gastel says:

i couldnt agreee more with shirley having a way to change everything without replacing your huds would be most useful.

  7. @5: you can’t remove your bones, but there are ways to make a more blobby avatar if that’s what you really want. First, you can change your shape; you might be able to get what you want that way. If not, you need the methods that are used to make non-human avatars — building yourself partly or completely out of prims, using invisiprims to hide unwanted parts of the body, and using custom animations to fold up limbs and tuck them out of the way.

  8. Ron Crimson says:

Thanks Argent and Jon for the tip ^_^ that’s so simple I would never have thought of it 🙂 Sadly my eyeballs are the permanent home of two of my most-used (and favorite) multifunctional attachments… hmm, I guess I’ll just link two glowing spheres together and wear ’em “on the nose”…. yeah, that’ll work 😀

  9. Ron Crimson says:

    Ugh… I meant Jeremy of course, not Jon… o_O

  10. Argent Stonecutter says:

Another fun thing to attach to your eyes are antennae, it makes them flick this way and that as you look around.

  11. Argent Stonecutter says:

Oh, Jeremy, how about aliases in our inventory so we can put the same no-copy item in more than one outfit? 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

  12. Ann Otoole says:

@11 – Now an option to create a symbolic link would be nice. Everything in inventory is a symbolic link to the one record for the object in the asset system anyway right?

  13. Argent Stonecutter says:

Well, the alias would have to be a link to the master copy in the inventory, not a separate link to the same UUID, because that would actually be a copy not a link.

  14. This is some really helpful information especially to all the noobs out there that have no idea what they are doing. Keep up the good work on new knowledge.

  15. Mini Pinion says:

@11: Yes! That would be soooooo great! .. As it stands right now, these ‘outfits’ are not a big help at all, at least to me. But symbolic links would rock!

  16. athenajolie4 Low says:

how do you think the plays have had if properly block east for several minutes see time when several have connects?

  17. Ron Crimson says:

@ 16: how do you block speak the strange of your lips when several have listen time properly if plays no one comprehensive?

    (Translation: “Say what?”)

  18. Ron Crimson says:

OK, I really don’t understand why this wink 😉 always shows up in my posts… I ain’t puttin’ ’em there on purpose o_O

  19. Noisey Lane says:

I’m yet to understand why I can’t have umpteen copies of an item if I can’t transfer them or perhaps even can’t modify them. It would make ‘outfits’ a working tool and the idea of alias’ is the obvious solution if there is in fact a good reason for it to be no copy (can’t think of one) in the first place.

  20. Lozlo Peng says:

off topic – anyone having trouble logging in?

  21. Dael Ra says:

With respect to clothing at least, the point about no-copy only really comes into play if the garment is transferable. If you’re in the business of selling clothes, you definitely don’t want copy and transfer.

There are also plenty of good reasons to have no-copy objects if they’re meant for use in sim rather than on a person.

Symbolic links would therefore be very handy to have.

  22. Hewitt Huet says:

Jeremy, another Home Run swing on your part. Folks, is this guy the most useful and nicest Linden, or what. Practical advice about the outfit folder schema and how to use that. I figured that out myself …. after a YEAR of being on SL!!!! Wished you were around then!

Good work. And all you regulars here know Hewitt NEVER says that kind of stuff here! LOL

  23. Ron Crimson says:

Hewitt, I’m a regular and I’ve no idea who you are. LOL 😀

  24. Harper says:

In re #s 2-3: Actually, I would watch out for anyone with glowing eyes like that. Remember classic Star Trek: “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” with the friend of Captain Kirk who got psi-zapped.

  25. Volosy says:

    I’ve problems with login too!

  26. lauren zipper says:

with clothing and other things………….can we have a “back” or “undo” button that returns you to your previous configuration (or is there one already in there). It would be very helpful when you do somethig stupid (or just plain not what you wanted) that you can quickly. go back to what you were before.

I have always had trouble with outfits because i mix-n-match stuff and some items you cant urilize in several outfits.

  27. Alvi Halderman says:

Cool im so glad to hear about the new default avatars cuz now noobs won’t look like noob’s……….

  28. Alvi Halderman says:

:)I hope that default avatars aren’t transfer cuz it would be a shame to see them on all freebie Stores……:):):):):):)

  30. Pepper Haas says:

For Tiny Empires players: Do not, I repeat, do not click “replace outfit” even if that outfit includes your HUD, during any kind of deal, especially not your trader year!!

  31. Pepper Haas says:

Sorry for taking up two entries: Yes I agree, PLEASE give us alias references to our no-copy outfit items, for our outfit folders.

  32. johnnyfender boa says:

I do not understand the new avatars. 90% of new members are gone in a month. almost 100 of those left do complete makeovers within a week. I might have spent the time on the critical issues that have made 12 million plus residents disappear for good….with the average longevity of ne members being about approximately a month.

  33. @32: johnny, there are many things that affect the new user experience; the quality of avatars is one of them. And it’s one that Linden Lab was able to address with relatively little effort on their part, and none at all from the programmers who are working on those critical issues you are thinking of.

Criticizing the deployment of developers is one thing; in some cases you might well feel that those people should be working on your favorite project A instead of project B. (I know I have felt that way on occasion!) Criticizing the work of community managers by saying that they don’t fix bugs is silly.

  34. Morgy Dinzeo says:
