[RESOLVED] Support Portal Maintenance Tonight: Now 9pm-Midnight PDT

[Resolved at 10:50pm Pacific] Our Support Portal is back online!

[Updated at 10:10pm Pacific] Maintenance is in progress. — Frontier

As reported earlier this week, our support portal will be offline for system maintenance tonight, Saturday, 26th April.

Our software supplier has reduced the length of the downtime from six hours to three, from 9:00pm-Midnight PDT.

During that time, the support portal will be unavailable for chat or ticketing services.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause to you.

    Please re-read your dictionary for the actual definition of “Resolved”. We see “issues” resolved only to experience them repeatedly, most times very shortly after the “resolution”. I seem to recall a blog posting not long ago about not “jumping the gun” on issues being “resolved” until they are, or is there an asset server bug in my monitor when I read the content of the blog?

    This is a copy of a letter started by a group of Second Life residents to Linden Lab and posted on several websites as a means of making their voices heard.

    In the past eighteen months, Second Life has expanded, growing from a small community of early adopters to a platform supporting millions of users. Linden Lab has created a world that inspires a deep level of passion in its users and provides unprecedented opportunities to share creatively, socially, and financially.

    With explosive levels of growth often come unexpected problems. In keeping with your company’s policy and rich history of resident involvement, we the undersigned would like to take this opportunity to address some concerns that we feel have gone unanswered for too long.

    There are some consistent, ongoing problems that are getting worse under heavy load, not better, and are not simply irritants but problems that are causing financial loss in some cases, which is unacceptable. Here is a brief list of the main concerns:

    * Inventory loss – this is a devastating problem that is worsening. We have no ability to protect our own inventories through backups, and are trusting you to protect that data. This is the highest priority. Sensible inventory limits (on non-verified accounts only), combined with better management tools and ways to protect our inventory ourselves would help to mitigate the problem as well. Regardless, this cannot continue – we will not accept financial loss as a feature of Second Life. It is your responsibility as service provider to ensure our data is not lost, and you are failing us.

    * Problems with Find and Friends List – we continue to see search outages on a far too regular basis. It is bad enough trying to get anywhere without being able to use search, but many users are also paying money for classified ads. Our friends lists just do not work reliably any longer, after years without an issue with them. If America Online/MSN/Yahoo can provide presence information for hundreds of millions of users, surely there is a way to make our friends lists work again.

    * Grid stability and performance – teleports fail quite regularly, especially under heavy load. Attachments end up in places they did not start out in, and sim performance varies wildly. None of this makes for a very pleasant experience for users. Long promised improvement to physics and scripting would help dramatically to reduce these problems, but there are a lot of other scalability issues as well. It often feels like the grid is coming apart at the seams. The promised use of limiting logins of non-verified accounts during peak load has been severely lacking. This would be an effective interim solution to load issues, but Linden Lab seems unwilling to use it.

    * Build tool problems – the importance of build tools that actually work as promised cannot be overstated enough – we rely on them to create content. Prim drift, disappearing prims, imprecise placement, problems with linking and other issues with the tools need to be addressed. Too much time is being spent trying to work around the problems.

    * Transaction problems – inventory deliveries are failing with an alarming (and annoying) frequency, leaving merchants with the burden of replacing missing content and having to try to confim the transaction in the first place. We trust that our L$ balances are accurate, but given recent problems, that is a cause for concern as well, and one we place our full trust in you to ensure its accuracy.

    We remain fully supportive of Second Life and are more than willing to continue doing our part to help, but our confidence is steadily being eroded due to a general lack of communication and the apparent failure to successfully address the many issues detailed above. What we are asking for is that these problems are addressed immediately, ahead of new features, and that we are able to see tangible improvements. We accept that this will not happen overnight but it also cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely either.

    Linden ppl:
    You have several portions of our SL that are contracted out to outside vendors. It should be in every one of these contracts that they must maintain an in world presence. Hopefully they will come to understand that this is not “just a game”.
    Also we should know what vendor is responsible for what part of SL.
    Believe me, we will add our considerable verbal might to LL’s to pressure them to do their jobs!

Also having trouble with typing lag, to the point I can’t communicate with anyone. Its a new problem happening in the last few days. Please, please Lindens fix the problems.

    So is this another reason, i get LOG IN FAILED?
    i was online with MAJOR SL yet again Problems and it crashed.
    managed to get back on and said my avie would apear in a momant
    then asked if i was male or female.

    it loaded as a Total NOOB and Inventory is Comletely Blank.
    Again at that moment it crashed.
    Since then i get LOGIN Failled !!!!

    Grrrrrrrr This is Getting So frustrating to a point i am NOT going to be a Paying Resident anymore..

    Tried to logon and am getting login failed. I was asked if i wanted my character to be male or female. When i tried to relog my cache was cleared automatically, but i still couldnt log on.

    I am terrified i have lost my extrensive inventory.

  37. Err, actually, I DON’T think the last issue, currently marked “Resolved,” is, in fact, resolved. I can’t even change clothes, much less rezz anything, and I can no longer log in now. Just says a terse “Login Failed.” No Caps-lock issues, nada. Just…no logging in. Please reconsider closing the case on the asset server issue. It ain’t fixed as of yet. For me, it’s worse now than it was earlier today.

  42. I would love to see a response to the current Failed Logins from LL here on the Blog. Before I crashed pieces of my inventory vanished, (large amounts.) I would like to logon once more for piece of mind before I go to bed and see what if anything in my Inventory has disappeared.

    Of course, from what I am hearing from others, I may not be alone.

    LL, you got us addicted to checking the blog for news when things go wrong and now would be a good time to fill us in. (30 minutes after you announced the Database, Asset issues were [Resolved].)

    I keep getting the message Login Failed (with nothing else) for only one of my characters. My alts are able to log in with no issues However, this one character I can’t get in with. I was just online, I logged off to restart my computer then began getting that message. Once, I logged in, but I was “ruthed” not only that, but it was as if I was new, I got the message “Your character will appear in a moment, use the arrow keys to walk” and all the pop ups about editing, opening inventory, etc that you get as a newbie. So, I logged off once again and now again I am getting the Login Failed message!

    I noticed the blog for assest server says it’s resolved, but is it really?
    Anyone else having issues like this?

    And I have cleared my cache and tried logging in to other sims as well with the same results!

    Can’t change clothes, objects not rezzing or attaching, and when I go in, I’m ruthed…O.o

    It’s really all very simple. Someone builds a dam, and it has a capacity, as the dam starts to fill in, the makers start to add a few artistic touches to make it look nice, however, because of the water pressure and the sculptures the makers added, a crack appears. Isntead of repairing the crack when it first appeared, the makers just applied a band-aid, and they made the dam walls taller, so they could get more water in. All along, water was poured and more sculptires and glitter added to it. And the crack got bigger and the more band-aids were added. And that’s what’s been happening here too. Instead of trying to figure out where the crack is and how to fix it, they just made this HUMONGOUS MESS and not in between all those codes, some operation, some defunct, some just “glitter”, they can’t find where the “dam(n) crack” is…

  55. Aria, the same thing is happening to me where I can’t logon as my main av, but can with my alt. This has happened to me once before and support told me it was because my av’s are housed on different servers. Sounds like LL is having server issues YET again. *sighs*

    Why is it that the general program keeps going down,possibly because of all of the free accounts.If all paid then LL could get better servers and maybe just maybe we could ALL enjoy being able to log in.I was given a time to log in but guess what ,it came and went still cant get in. How about getting the program working before you try changing things,then we can at least have some fun while things are changed for the worse, yes I did mean for the worse after all it never gets better does it.

    “Resolved” is helpful and sufficient only when these problems are not reoccurring or at least, not as frequent.

    More communication and transparency would give everyone a better sense of how Linden Lab operates and perhaps, a little more sympathy in these cases.

    I’m using this blog to complain about the service on the support portal..yes i know..probably a waste of time..but I’ve spent over a week now too-ing and fro-ing with support staff trying to find out the answer to what seemed a straightforward question…I still don’t have an answer but i do have a lot of thanks for getting back to them with my issue.
    now I’m a premium account holder and all i wanted to know was how to connect that premium account with another existing free account…sound simple?

    I don’t usually post on the blogs, in fact, I talked with a linden yesterday and told her that sometimes the complainers go to far. However, today I have a different take on that. To the new CEO:

    You have a background in Customer Service. I seriously hope you can see that LL customer service sucks. Not the lindens themselves, but the policies in place within Linden Labs. When the grid is down, those of us that pay for memberships and tier fees should be compensated for the time. I know when my cable goes down, they deduct a prorated amount from my bill. Its good customer service to do that.

    If the asset server goes wonky and kills someones inventory – they should be compensated for the lindens they spent on that inventory. You have full transaction records of every in world purchase. If it is your fault (or one of the mysterious “vendors”), then you should pay to replace the missing items. Again, its called good customer service.

    This is far beyond a “Game”. We have a real economy in here and people make a living in here. When you charge for that right, and charge mightily I may add – since tier is so high, start up costs for sims, etc, and you make money on every Linden Exchange transaction, there comes a certain responsibility to your customers. I don’t care what your “legal” documents say – if you keep going the way you are, you will lose money, and your customers will go away. I cannot tell you how many people I know of that have left SL, pulling their businesses out, and hence YOUR revenue from those businesses, because of poor customer service on your end.

    You do nothing to help enforce the copyright laws that you so proudly advertise. You hold no responsibility for lost inventory or down time. You care less when a creator spends hours, days, weeks, creating something to only have it disappear before their very eyes with no explanations.

    You have good people working for you, for the most part. Every linden I have ever dealt with has been very helpful and apologetic. However, you need to fix the structure of your policies, and realize where your bread is buttered. You are marketing to large companies now, do you think they will put up with this treatment for long? They will take their ball and bat and go home. Your main customer base is still the little guy, the individual with time and disposable income, or the small business man or woman who is eeking out a living through your company. That is the meat and potatoes of your business. Take care of us, from the partier who just likes to dance and shop in sl, to the creator who sells their wares on a piece of land that they pay tier for.

    Its time to limit the free accounts. That alone will cut down on several problems – grid overloading and griefers. Ban bots. COMMUNICATE! That right there would keep most of us happy. And most of all…. Fix the Grid~! Stop with the pretty things, stop with the gizmos and gadgets that cause more problems then what they are worth. All of that can come in time once you fix what you have.

    stopping bots is good to stop advertising, but they don’t cause the big lag. most people who run bots are the ones on the 100.000 traffic sims CAMPING HERE, GET FREE LINDENS, not on the mainland or other places you like to go to.

    i agree with kicking the camp bots out but i object to banning my bans-slurl-spammers-in-my-groups-bot-script since it makes the world better instead of more annoying

    linden labs should stop advertising copyright protection untill they actually enforce it. there is a big amount of stolen items out on the grid and we all see they dont enforce it and it doesnt works.

    Wow angry people, LL you should really listen. It is only a matter of time before you get sued by a group from here, or people here find a way to hit you were it hurts, like a mass account downgrade as suggested above. I was one of the odd few who did not get booted out. Lucky me, but how fun to be in world with no one else there. My own sim would not let me tp directly to it, said I didn’t have access. Stability LL, I would suggest you role back the clock. Take us back a few veiwer versions, before your windlight (who cares about pretty water & sky if you can’t stay on or tp or use $L or rez) started screwing things up. Find the problem then over the week, not week end. Even if it means going down late night each night of the week day. Fix the most basic issues, and let us know you are addressing them. Seriously too, fix your method of recieving and helping with support/complaints. You have to hear us complain. I get a 404 erroe trying to list an event, I email the address it gives me, I get a responce that that address is no longer valid? So no help? I have to put a support ticket in? LOL like I want to bother. I just face it that I am not able to use the function, yet others are and i was able to before. I saw it coming, the fracked up weekend, the week had been too smooth only a few glitches and issues, I knew come fri and sat Kaboom crash screach. And there it was just like clockwork. If I can predict this so can you. Please have a big meeting and hear the people, they are sick of it. Figure out what it wil take and fix stability first and foremost, then leave it alone. Let things work for awhile. Thx

I thought it may have been my computer but every other program I have works ok, except SL. I also have people I have to contact in SL but apparently nothing I can do about that. Please let us know what is going on. Im from Australia and would like to know if this is a global problem or not. Post a notice somewhere so at least we know what is going on. Thanks.

    Same here (Europe/Austria) Globe-wide not all accounts are affected, because some lucky people are in game, but a relative big amount of accounts has still troubles to log-in or – if logged in – troubles with issues in game, like failed tp, failed rezzing, transaction probs and inventory probs. So, it is not your computer.

    I think I have finally figured it out. LL feels bad that so many people have become addicted to their product, so they are trying to help us break the addiction by gradually making SL more and more unusable. It’s their form of ‘tough love’ — and it’s working! Now that a large part of my inventory has become permanently unrezzable, my cravings for SL have diminished greatly. :-\

You are kicking event postings back for saying the artist names, which are live artists game names as mis spelled words as well as the name of the club hosting the live event as a miss spelled word. If we cannot post our live events due to the spelling of names you supply part of, we can not post it so people know of the event and you are sinking live music events in world.     For all of you who wonder why individuals complain here, the main reason is there is little information supply from Linden Lab/ research on a timely basis. If you analyze the bulk of these complaints it is not about the enjoyment of the game but the lack of ability to enjoy the game. The method employed by the lab is very indirect and shelters them from direct problem solving. There is no excuse for someone not to be able to log on for two days. One suggestion I might make on that topic. When this happens to me, and it has several times in my 3 year life, strip everything related to SL from your computer. This does not mean a simple uninstall but thats the starting point. Go to documents and settings/your computer name/application data/ remove the second life folder totally. Then run regedit do a search for second life and remove all entries. Then do a search for linden and remove the linden research entry. Now reboot and re install slug life. This seems to work in most cases. I believe the most important thing is the removal of the sl folder in application data as something there does not track data supplied. Oh yes and run a check disk for you windows users so that you may unlink all the cross linked files this game enjoys creating. It is a shame that LL has not seen fit to produce a written manual for the game, as most on line games do, as this information could be contained as well as many other items such as the most heard question I receive from noobs, where am I and what do I do. You have wasted a resource LL in not using the massive knowledge base to which you have access. When I see a 4 year old player posting here that should be an indication that all is not well in your small world. I also suppose you treat these blog responses the way most online games do as a place for the community to whine and complain in as much as only a small portion of your entity takes the time to even read much less submit a post. Take note most here, who take the time to post, care about this world you have created. Of course you do have the one liners that just take up space and should be removed so they do not take the limited space you allocate. But, then many other things in the game do not function why should we expect the blog to be policed.
