1.19.2 Rolling Restart This Week

We will be deploying server version 1.19.2 to the Second Life Grid this week. We have found and fixed the problem that caused us to halt last week’s deploy (described here) and revert to 1.19.1.

As we have been doing, this week’s server deploy will be done via a three-stage rolling restart. At some point this week during the deploy windows given below, each region will be down for 5-10 minutes as the host on which it is running is updated with the new 1.19.2 code.

The schedule is planned as follows:

  • Tuesday evening, 8:00PM-9:00PM PDT : we will deploy the new server code to ~500 regions.
  • Wednesday morning, 7:00AM-9:00AM PDT : we will deploy the new server code to an additional ~1500 regions.
  • Thursday evening, 6:00PM-11:00PM PDT : we will deploy the new server code to all remaining regions running the main Second Life Server.

Regions running the Havok4 Beta Server will not be affected by this deploy.

[Update 2008/03/25 10:15] The deploy to ~1500 regions will occur Wednesday morning rather than Wednesday evening, as originally announced. The schedule above has been updated.

[Update 2008/03/25 20:35] The deploy to 510 regions is done. The version being deployed is

[Update 2008/03/26 10:24] The deploy to an additional 1133 regions has completed. There are now 1642 regions on version

[Update 2008/03/26 11:20] Here is the list of regions which have been upgraded to Second Life Server 1.19.2. You can determine which version is running on the current region by looking at Help:About Second Life.

[Update 2008/03/28 00:43] The full rolling restart of Second Life is complete. This restart is upgrading the grid from server version to version

  1. I will leave this place says:

Any plans to make things going better soon? Like allow moneytransfers and why not groupchats?

    Honest Linden, fix this now!

  2. Kerik Rau says:

Linden Labs™ doesn’t have to use the trademark while mentioning Second Life™.

  3. Stephen Zenith says:

I’m pretty sure Havok™ is a registered trademark. If you’re going to make us note your trademarks, you pretty much have to do the same with other peoples.

  4. KMeist Hax says:

Is every comment in this blog going to poke fun at the trademarks policy? …Besides, Stephen Zenith, it’s a blog, not marketing materials.

  5. so how will this affect people using earlier versions of SL or 3rd party clients? i prefer to use the nicholaz edition which is only up to 1.18.5 atm. and i prefer to use it because its not as laggy as windlight.

  6. Jayme Llewellyn says:

Will this restart finally mean a fix to the essential problems of a main grid and central gaming engine that simply cannot cope with the volume of the game? Or do we still have to put up with a game that has the stability of a lead house built on quicksand?

  7. Sean Heying says:

@6 Dratko, this is server version 1.19.2 not a client version. The Nicholaz edition will still work with the updated server code (for this release at least)

  8. concerned says:

Well will this code get rolled out this time or a new bug found but then will we notice,RC 1 and windlight get merged and alpha borks cause alpha item sales to drop 50%.Group chat still borked,Content theft bigger than ever but its ok because SL(TM)(C)(PLC)has protected itself and still we get bi daily messages not to make transactions until told to because something has gone wrong but we never find out what.

I normally make allowances for grid issues but you have got ahead of your tallents now and our second lifes(tm)(c)(plc)s are suffering to the point that being a user since 2005 i am actually making the moves to go to basic account.

I am an island owner right now paying over 300 dollars a month but i have had enough i hope you guys sort this because you don’t see your destroying your own product.

  9. concerned says:

    @5 KMeist Hax
Maybe if you ever design a product you put a lot of effort in to then find someone with a tool can copy and sell this item with no work whatsoever and you get about as much help as trying to drive over your own head you would feel Lindens trademark amendments a bit like a kick in the face.

  10. Averie Lane says:

Maybe one of these days the Friends Online on the website will work right, too? It has been messed up for over a month now. Wanna fix that while you’re at it? grr! 😛

  11. Vylixan Fallon says:

IF it fixes the teleport issues ( logout after TP) , groupmessages ( half of the don;t come through or take ages) and also the stackheap memmory issue, SL taking up to 1.4 GB of memory 😀 It has more memory leaks then a sale hunting woman spending money on everything.

I also found out that sometime you have to TP to mainland first and then to a private isalnd to go there , now thats also a old bug what should have been fixed long ago.

But please continue the good work

  12. Tanya Spinotti says:

@12 – I didn’t understand the memory leak metaphor. Could I suggest “The client’s memory handling has more holes than a colander”? (OK so that one’s not great either, but it’s the best I could come up with)

  13. Lucas Fairweather says:

Lag Lag Lag, slow viewer and poor performance on a FOUR CORE machine with 4 gigs of ram
Sl better fix the bugs or loose money as folks revert back to a basic account OR some one else comes out with a similar product with better implementation
I think the viewer needs to be recoded from scratch and a version released for Vista 64 and XP 64
There is no need for an application to take up to one gig of ram

  14. U M says:

@14 remeber its our fault and not that of the coders……..:/ yea right……… This memory leak is just a nightmare. I wish people would stop pointing our its users side…………IF the coders had a half of a brain maybe we would have had this problem lugged by know. All do repect we have some good coders but some lack any real value. How many tims has LL said the memory leak was fixed and “YET” again its appears. priceless………………

  15. trinity says:

We’re trying to laugh at it, since it is really irrelevant to show such a concern protecting a brand (Linden Lag(tm)), when things are going worse and worse. SL(tm) is going out of control now, and issues are exponentially increasing, because there are more and more users.
It IS really out of control.
So… yes, we’re still trying to have a good laugh.
But don’t worry, it might not last long.
Someday there won’t be anything to laugh at.

  16. AWM Mars says:

I sincerely hope they sort out the media playing/streaming situation. The last ‘updated’ client borked a years worth of work and investments, not just for us, but for a whole raft of business’s.

‘Introducing’ the new functions for land media, has taken SL back over 2 years, breaking faclities such as media HUDs, multiple movies/media per parcel, even streaming itself is effected. Work arounds have been installed but its a shambles that LL knee jerk these things.

IF they had bothered to either look at what has evolved in the platform, or at least given some sort of prior notice, they could have saved a lot of time and money introducing these so called updated functions. THEY ARE ALREADY THERE Doh…

  17. Pingback: Second Life | Rolling Restart esta semana | DiarioSL

  18. Kerik Rau says:

    @ AWM Mars

Not to mention that the displaying of web pages in the parcel has a severe impact on the performance of the client.

i sincerely wish that LL™ would concentrate on fixing the viewer stability. People probably arn’t leaving because they can’t display webpages in their parcel or have pretty water. The problem is that they get pissed off when they have to log in a billion times a day as the client crashes or bloats up to the point were you can barely move.

My guess is a lot of the load on the grid may be reduced by working on the client. Things like minimizing a profile or map and restoring it seems to wipe out the data and cause it to retrieve the information again. Reduce the amount of load on the server by the individual client and more people will be able to be on simultaneously, it isn’t rocket science.

  19. trinity says:

MMh.. my point of view is that SL can’t be enjoyable anymore as soon as we reach something like 62000 avatars connected at the same time, like seen yesterday, at 2pm linden time.
    Why this increase ?

Irresponsible and stupid @ssholes creating camping bots.

  20. trinity says:

Now, how to stop this from happening ?

THIS is rocket science for me.

  21. pantaiputih korobase says:

trinity, that game crashes sometimes even with 40.000 users online and still is a miracle :-)) I hope that not many users are highly pregnant right now and deliver their babies to the game soon to make it really unplayable, sort it out LL(tm).
keep on the good work and I truely love SL(tm)

  22. trinity says:

;-)) I have never had any freezing problem with this new comp I have, except precisely when there are more than 60000 people logged, AND that I try to upload a texture.
It is a very, very precise case showing affluence IS the reason.

But, again, I am not an expert… It might be just a coincidence..
    I love SL ™, too :-)))

  23. Chick says:

Please when changing the TOS to protect your own trademarks, also be fair and tell us creators with what to do to stop IP theft. Seeing that almost all big shops have been ripped off once or several times, and the amount of stolen items that lost value because of ending up in the freebie pile grows and grows, it shows the DMCA the way it is handled now does NOT work. It is impossible to DMCA every reseller once an item has been spread.

Why don’t you give us any hint on what we as content creators should do about this? Or are you trying to hide that there is nothing you WANT to do about this? (because technically you could)

You have been ignoring the issue for 2 years now, wouldn’t it be time to give a reaction on these blogs?

  24. Christos Atlantis says:

In responce to Chic, most off the content creators have slowed down, most of the stores are losing over 50% of the business once done, I fear that as the content creators stop creating, SL will continue the downward trend, already they have lost major accounts, I hear more are leaving soon, without new content SL will grow stale.

SL has not been stable for more that 1 week in last year and a half, I find this sad, because i love SL, and hate to see it fall so low, in the eyes of the public and the users.

  25. Oh the trademark satires are a TOTAL HOOT©®™ (I’m staking my claim to this statement right now) :p (by the way you DO know it doesn’t apply to common speak, right? LOL)

Okay – good to go on the server updates. Though, I’ve been really happy with the way my sim is running on dot-one. There was one version that brought everything to a crawl previously – I hope we don’t get a repeat.

Also – I was on the OZ(©®™?) sim last night – and it’s still on .89.1234567 or something! LOL

Okay – well – put in a ticket to up my sim(©®™?) to Havok(©®™?) 4 early adopter. Concierge(©®™?) is usually pretty tight to two-weeks. They’re slipping-up I say! LOL

/me runs off to Support Portal(©®™?) to check on that ticket… but as always with a chuckle and a smile as he doesn’t take ANYTHING here too seriously – and is HAPPIER for it.

  26. Argent Stonecutter says:

I don’t know what all the bots are doing in SL these days, but they’re not camping. You see huge piles of bots in skyboxes and buried under the ground, with names like “Ninja1 Randomname” “Ninja2 Randomname”, and so on. Some people have them all sitting on overlapping poseballs so there’s 20 or 30 bots all crunched up in a 1 meter box. These aren’t campers. These kinds of things should be abuse-reportable.

I’ve also found skyboxes full of plywood cubes running multiple notecard or landmark spam scripts per prim. Abuse reported them, and I go back a week later they’re still there.

  27. one year in SL says:

the bot farms are often used by the land/parcell owner to increase the traffic on this place – and i think ‘yes, it’s an unfair way of manipulating traffic, means abuse’

  28. Argent Stonecutter says:

I’ve seen some bot farms in stores, but I’ve seen others floating over undeveloped land. It’s a mystery (cue Edie Brickell).

  29. Zi Ree says:

Yes, I’ve seen a group of bots in a welcome area, on the bottom of the sea. I can’t really see the use there.

  30. Tristin Mikazuki says:

Lindens can we get a progress report of the server restarts?
ie % done if its even started yet?

  31. Prospero Linden says:

NOTE — this blog post is about the server deploy, not about the new TOS or trademarks. I’ve deleted a bunch of comments on the latter topics, as they are not on-topic for this post.

Also, this is a server deploy, not a new client version.

Regarding one server question : fixes for group chat are not included in this server deploy. There are developers actively working on fixing that, but we have nothing to announce at this time. You will hear on this blog when we have a fix for those problems ready to roll out.

  32. coldfusion cheeky says:

Can anyone please provide the name of an upgraded region?

  33. Chick says:

Why don’t you open up the comments in the trademarks blog again? Then we can post them where they belong.

  34. Chick says:

Its kind of unlogical to close down comments on a topic which matters to people a lot. As far as the theft goes – why don’t you open up a blog post about it so we can post there? Seeing the Jira (900 votes) it is an issue which matters to a lot of residents.

No reaction on the jira, no blog post about it, not a single reply. Just “we delete your comments about this because they are off topic”.

  35. Alias Schilling says:

Wondered if this server update will include curing the on-going probkens of friends lists not loading? (..and/or – admitfedly more amusing! – finding hippos in friends lists?!?)

Ref the trademarks discussion, any plans for a series of Town Hall Meetings? This is a fairly big subject (the discuwsion thread filled in no time) and would be great for people to e given trhge opportunitty to air, discuss possible problems, etc. Pref some in European time would be good too!

  36. Prospero Linden says:

coldfusion @26 — I’ve added a list of the regions that have been updated to the post above.

  37. Captain Noarlunga says:

    @25 – Prospero Linden ™

If you allowed more comments on the other blogs , residents wouldnt have to vent their frustration here. If you look at all the recent blog posts referring to problems, hardly any gave the opportunity to comment. This has been done for a while now as it is obvious you do not wish to hear any constuctive critiscism. The overall performance has gone down and the number of incidents of “dont do this till we tell you” has increased dramatically. You bring it on yourselves when you disable comments and never respond to our frustrations. You could learn a lot by studying the feedback and interaction on the Havok4 blog posts……at least there is a 2-way dialogue there and we are given some answers, rather than being treated like mushrooms. …… and for the post about “i spend $300 and want action”…..I spend over $1500 a month and I think i deserve some too ! Maybe the time has come to re-evaluate my investments?

  38. Sascha says:

Well ,are you also updating the Havok4 ß sims? Or just deploying the new server there too now?? So why did my region got a restart lol

  39. Blake Sachs says:

Well, if I remember correctly, LSL support for PRIM_GLOW was added in this release of the server code…
Hopefully we’ll see viewer side support soon, if not in the next main viewer, then at least in an update of the RC. I’m really looking forward to scriptable glow. I think it’s about time to roll out the Windlight viewer. Deal with the “Fix this and that before you introduce new features because OMG my life depends on it.”-crybabies later. They’d be bitching even if the viewer was flawless.

  40. Lider says:

i dont know if this has anything with the lates restarts…but this morning after a sim that i was on went down i got disconected cause i was not infront of the computer and guess what? when i sing back in 80% of my inventory gone….folders are empty…i already clean the cache…unistal and inistalled client again…etc…now the big question is….WHO IS GONNA PAY FOR ALL MY STUFF? i been in SL for about 9 months or so….and im one off those that enjoy the game alot and have spend alot money on it so far…high tier etc…clothes, all that stuff…now who gonna pay for my stuff…to be honest i dont even fell like playn no more….just to think about starting all over i get depressed….

  42. Azure Lukas says:

Has the Rolling Restart for this evening (Thursday 27 March) been cancelled? It has been taken out of the calendar. Although it is still here in the Blog. I do wish Linden Lab would communicate CLEARLY so we know what to expect. If we get used to looking at the calendar then it should be authoritative, and not leave us guessing.

  43. Prospero Linden says:

Yes, the rolling restart tonight (03/27) will happen as announced above.

  44. Alexandra Rucker says:

Just as a suggestion to any lindens who might possibly maybe perhaps be reading this. 🙂

Please post before-and-after version numbers for any rolling restarts like this? That way we have something to go by to see whether or not any specific region we’re in has been, or will be, updated.

    Thank you!

  45. hugsalot says:

What another rolling restart to change one little thing that will probably have no noticeable difference in quality. Just more downtime and no bugs addressed.

Tomorrow we will still have the same Database performance issues, IM groups chats still broke, Teleport crashing and all the same crap we read every day on this blog.

  46. WarKirby Magoijiro says:

hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry hurry >.<

This release supports scripted glow. It works in some places and not others now. Been waiting too long for it

*wishes the rolling restart would go faster*

  47. Tristin Mikazuki says:

Can we get a % of whats been done like in the past?

  48. Prospero Linden says:

I’ll post the % done about every hour.

I’ve also listed the version number that we’re going from and going to with this rolling restart in the update above.

  49. GinaWild Bailey says:

Can the region restart be delayed by estate owners and managers? we have an important meeting on our sim with an investor at 4am slt and it would be a shame if we get booted in the middle of the meeting :-/

  50. Prospero Linden says:

The region restart cannot be delayed by estate managers, no, sorry.

The rolling restart will almost certainly be done well before 4am SLT.

  51. GinaWild Bailey says:

great 🙂 thanks for answering so fast 🙂

kisses to all the hard working Lindens, you guys do a great job.

  52. Jayme Llewellyn says:

Prospero – you seem to the one monitoring the blog at the moment. Maybe you can be kind enough to tell us when Linden Labs are finally going to get around to a complete upgrade of the main grid? Because quite clearly it is well and truly outdated and is in sore need of a major upgrade.

  53. Rascal Ratelle says:

I hope that the following issues are being worked on.

    * Serious memory leaks.
    * Grid instability and poor performance
    * Teleports fail quite regularly, especially under heavy load
    * Sim performance varies wildly (NOT due to client content either)
    * Low FPS
    * Serious texture latency
    * World maps are very slow loading
    * Crashes and viewer hangs and freezes
    * Ongoing friends list issues
    * Group chat totally borked
    * Group Notices not getting to all members of a group
    * Random animations starting out of nowhere (and no, not an attack)
    * Sailing off into void space after crossing a sim line
    * Did we mention crashes? Why yes, yes we did.
    * Major bugs not being corrected month after month, year after year (prime example: llTargetOmega)

  54. coventina dalgleish says:

What ever is transpiring teleports are failing, wear items is failing, script times are running at a 1/3 rate a normal pose ball script that is documented to run at .120 – .160 ms now absorbs .450 to .600 milliseconds this seems to happen every time changes are made performance just goes down the dumper. It would be nice for a change if any update would go smoothly. Oh and I caught the re run of CSI-NY last night what was wrong they didn’t seem to use actual SL content looked more like some creative departments idea of a cross between EQII, WoW, and SL. Well at least you got some good press but with a twisted sense of what the game is. Oh and I have never heard voice work that well obviously over dubbed )).

  55. angry shopper says:

When is LL going to fix the money transfer and buying issues? I’ve visited several stores and had trouble purchasing items. I’m on the verge of giving up shopping all together.

  56. Trella McMahon says:

O.K. now since your restart why am I getting this region is being run by another simulator message with your new download so I can’t even work on my own land I pay monthly for?
    Thanks so very much

  57. WarKirby Magoijiro says:

Still hasn’t reached Ferox yet D:

  58. U M says:

excited to see how ths will effect a few locations on sl. so far a few i been to seems to be going very nicely.

  59. Robyn says:

So far, the 1.19.2 “upgade” continues to be a disaster. Lag is higher than ever, rolling restarts are chasing everyone off in droves, the few who try to come back find they can’t connect or the sim is too lag-ridden to be usable. Another great upgrade to the rear, Lindens.

  60. bigmoe whitfield says:

well I saw one comment about the windlight into the main viewer. some residents Ive talked to are on disablity and can not afford to upgrade anytime soon or ever now are we just going to be mean and shove them off the only place they have a source of interaction with people or we going to make sure there will be support for people who have lower end machines? I am also one of those people mentioned there and 64mb videocard and 512mb ddr pc2700 ram dosnt get me far but lets me interact. just a thought before everybody rushes onto this eyecandy some of us cant handle

  61. Elvis Orbit says:

@52 You can tun off the Windlight in the client by setting the graphics slider to low. That will disable the Windlight Functions. Then manually adjust the ones that do work for you.

  62. WarKirby Magoijiro says:

If your PC can’t handle SL, you’ve not much business being here in the first place. It’s not fair to expect LL to continually compensate for old machines, for the sake of some who can’t or won’t upgrade. Progress waits for no man.

  63. Rascal Ratelle says:

    @55, it’s always the PC’s fault isn’t it?
Did you ever stop to think that maybe the grid isn’t 100% stable yet? and the viewers still have tons of unresolved bugs in them?
Lag is caused by a large number of factors, lots of av’s logged in the sims server, large numbers of scripts,
ongoing net work issues on LL’s side, serious unresolved memory leaks in the viewer.

Are you saying LL should ignore these issues just becuase SL works on YOUR blazing fast high performance computer?

Not all of us can afford blazing fast computers.

It would be nice if LL could code a down graded version.

  64. @55 So basically what you are saying is Screw the people who can’t afford blazing fast computers, let them leave SL.

Never mind the fact the LL is able to make an optional down graded version of the viewer.

Thanks a freaking lot dude. Glad to see you don’t give a dam about the rest of us.

  65. T. B. says:

    Er…. Rascal… Hold back youre horses…
Have you seen BigMoe’s comp. specifications ?
Do you really think LL(tm)(lol) should work on a downgraded version of SL(R)(lol again) that could run on a 64mb vid. card and 512mb ddr ???
    Seriously ??
Or was it a joke ??

  66. T. B. says:

    Oh ?!

    It was !!!

  67. pantaiputih korobase says:

well, T.B. Moes specs are way too old, sure, but SL (TM etc etc) should at least run on a 6 months old

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1795 MHz)
    Memory: 2046 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista (Build 6000)
    Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
    Graphics Card: GeForce 8400M GT/PCI/SSE2

this is not high end, but not low end either.
I jumped for joy first when the new RC came out as it ran pretty smooth for the first two days. Now, it is just the same as with the last RC. It eats my CPU and I can iron my clothes again with my laptop. CPU is very often 90 % to 95 % even on an empty sim. consequently, I would need to buy new equipment every 6 months as 6 months ago, everything was fine (except the problems everybody encounters). well, might boost the hardware industry, but can not be the sense of the game.
may be LL (TM etc etc) should cooperate with some companies to bring the REAL SL (TM etc etc) to the market (just a joke, not a real guess!!!!).
it is definitely time to sort out for LL what causes all these problems.
and yes, I love SL (TM) and am not a whiner, just dissapointed by the lack of improvement (except for WL, which I really love….)

  68. pantaiputih korobase says:

p.s. even starting the program – just opening it – makes the CPU go up to 50 % or more. another example: if you open the edit and then preferences menu on the login screen (means before connecting), the same happens. ain’t that strange?

  69. T. B. says:

    @ pantaiputih
Oh yes, it *should* work on your comp…
Agreed. Nothing to answer to that. You’re right.

I used to run SL(TM)(LOL) on a 6 months laptop, Vista, with absloutely no problem… Then, one day in December I think, after a mandatory upgrade, all I could do was : crash. Blue screen of death, every 2/3 minutes, overheating etc.
Now, I think the graph card 512mb dedicated is just toasted. I can’t even use this comp. to write a letter or check my mails..
    BSOD, BSOD, BSOD…. overheating…. BSOD.

There was nothing wrong with my laptop before this upgrade.
So… yes, you’re right. ABsolutely right

  70. pantaiputih korobase says:

T.B. do you know, I had a desktop – pretty new – it just melted while running SL (TM etc etc), it is dead, it does not start anymore. and this is NOT a fairy tail, my be just coincidence that it happened while SL ran.

I tend to quit SL now once I feel my upper legs become too hot – that prevents me from getting burns, too, LOL

  71. Vivienne says:

I bet LL has contracts with the computer hardware industry. A new PC and Macintosh every other six months seems to be necessary to run this with the breathtaking speed of 15 fps average. Ho much do Dell and Apple pay for that? Just curious,

  72. Zi Ree says:

Second Life always uses all CPU power it can get on a single core. So you will always see one core on 100%. The graphics engine tries to deliver as many frames per second as possible. You can’t do that when you are not using 100% of CPU time. It doesn’t matter if the sim is empty or crowded.

  73. pantaiputih korobase says:

haha, ZI, may be this is SLs (TM etc etc) problem, no other software does that ROFL
who wins the bug oscar now?

  74. Zi Ree says:

@65 pantaiputih korobase: Every 3D game does this. Even most of the older 2D games does it. It’s simply necessary to get highest frame rate. Normal office, internet or graphics application don’t do it, because they don’t need to update the screen periodically but only when some event has happened. But if you use a video editor or render a 3D scene, you will without a doubt see 100% CPU usage for the time of calculation.

  75. Vivienne says:

    @ Zi

I noticed SL performance depends more on the Graphic Card than the CPU. A fast CPU is only of real importance as soon as the Graphic Card hands calculations over to the CPU, which usually happens when the Video RAM is full. But…it is not very likely (at least in every other serious 3D app) that this happens (dynamich cache handling), even if you are running only 128 or 64 Video cards. The SL client is a mystery. How can it run at all in spite of being a huge piece of experimental labatory bug???

  76. Zi Ree says:

@67 Vivienne: I didn’t talk about whether the CPU or GPU do more for performance. Frankly, I’m not entirely sure which one does more, the CPU with prim calculations, occlusion culling, networking and environment updates or the GPU with shaders, filters, vertices and lighting. I only said, the CPU is always used to 100%, so SL can run as fast as possible on the respective machine.

  77. Vivienne says:

It´s 80 percent GPU and only 20 % (or so) CPU related in 3D , usually. The non.graphical calculations should be handled by the SL client fluently, without even using 20 % of te CPU. Because the SL viewer is not really a fast runner, even CPU related calculations perform mediocre in compariso. And why any application of his kind must use 1.5 GB of RAM after a while is one of these miracles even LL seems to be unable to explain. See, I do not think they do not fix all these horrible bugs in all the different parts (client, serverside, database, network etc.) because they refuse to fix them. They simply seem to be unable to do so properly, for what reason ever.

  78. coventina dalgleish says:

A simple question. Do you folks ever hope to have a smooth transition on these supposed upgrades. Now there seem to be again massive asset problems. Teleports are a gamble if they will work, vendors responding slowly if at all. The performance seems to be good but it makes no difference if other systems fail to operate. I realize you found bugs in the first release of the server side update but guess what you missed a lot more. You make it a challenge to run a business here to say the least. You ave seemed to have developed the knack for customer irritation and have that area mastered.

  79. coventina dalgleish says:

And one more question. Do you ever intend on plugging your massive memory leaks I am sitting here after being in the game for an hour watching the memory use climb through 1.77 gigabytes. There is no excuse for this. Slug Life is the only application running on this machine right now, except for this web site, so you get all of the credit for eating the memory.

  80. Cappy Frantisek says:

I doubt the problems you are experiencing are due to the server update. Current online numbers are over 61K, that’s alot of transactions to take care of for even the most robust database. As far as the memory leaks, I feel your pain, not everyone can afford 3G or more of RAM that it takes to support SL®™.

And as far as scripted prim glow goes, what the hell would you need that for? More annoying lights? I had someone come by me while I was building with a light attachment and it drowned iout my build. For god’s sake, get a life. Does it really matter if you look good?

    Kepp on chugging Linden Labs®™.

  81. Tristin Mikazuki says:

Never saw transaction take this long even with 60k+ online inless there is a problem with the assesst servers which there seems to be atm takes about 1 min for the transaction to go through

  82. FIX THIS NOW says:

Was the plan to make SL better or worse?

Jesus, wake up and fix this now Linden! This is starting to get really pathetic! The fucking assetserver, the transaction, teleports etc etc NOTING works

    Do something!

  83. Cappy Frantisek says:

And there it is, the daily asset server problems. I’ll make a prediction, when the numbers drop, because it’s useless to be in-world, the all clear will be sounded. Any bets?

  84. Loniki Loudon says:

Once again, the grid seems stable so its time to screw it up again. You may call SL up and running but telling people not to make purchases or take things to inventory and you may as well hang a closed for business sign. Business will be terrible for a good week but I am sure you will collect your 100% fees. I have a novel idea, if its working don’t screw with it! Why this update? What is the improvement? Its worst then ever now and it was just starting to be stable for a while. You IT people absolutely amaze me and not in a good way.

  85. Vivienne says:

LL is not IT, LL is pure adventurism.

  86. Jayme Llewellyn says:

It’s all about the main grid and central game engine seriously in need of an upgrade. Linden Labs surely know this by now (I mention it just about everytime) but do they bother to listen? No. Instead they keep on adding new paint jobs, hoping the client won’t see the massives cracks in the foundations. Let’s just hope they don’t “accidentally” pull off a load-bearing poster while adding yet another paint-job.

  87. eku Zhong says:

9th time this month, thats more than once a week that transactions fssk up after an improvement.

  88. EmWarrior says:

I have looked thru the list of sites that I take it are running is Dreams and DreamsEast running?

  89. Captain Noarlunga says:

This is beyond a joke now….these issues are completely ruining the game. I agree with some of the comments above…it is about time LL finally resolved these underlying issues instead of trying to patch over the cracks. It has not been this bad for a year. I am now seriously considering cutting my investment in SL for good…..enough is enough.

  90. Cappy Frantisek says:

lol, asset cluster reboot. When will they realize, you can’t handle billions of transactions on a wonky database server cluster. I could reboot too when the transactions get so backed up that they will never recover, pay me for that job.

If you are still putting good money over bad towards this GAME, and yes I said GAME, then you get what you deserve. Not that I want to see you lose your money but come on, we’ve known forever these problems existed. You think they are going to get better? Get your head out of the sand.

On Topic – The server code was working fine till the concurrency went above 60k, like everyday.

  91. Captain Noarlunga says:

I agree they probably wont get better. I was just venting and stating my probable intentions. 🙂

  92. Cappy Frantisek says:

Right! I dropped my premimum months ago. Won’t ever get back till they can prove me different.

  93. Vivienne says:

The system cannot handle 50,000 bots and campers as well as 10,000 “active” people who keep this running with their fees and get annoyed by the ongoing and frequent blackouts, never fixed and latest client bugs and all this. Too obvious.

  94. coventina dalgleish says:

Why yes you fixed the asset array haha no you just shuffled the deck again now other things are missing from inventory. Time has come to allow only live players in the game computer driven bots have no place here creating load as well as the campers. I realize because you make it nearly impossible for a new player to earn any money in this game they camp in order to have a few lindy’s to play with but enough is enough.

The concurrence is an on going game they have to play when I started there was a concurrence of 2500 and they had the same problems then 10k 20k and so on it always catches up just takes time .

All in all the game is still a nightmare with all the ongoing never solved bugs not to mention the ones that get reintroduced because no one ever seems to read their notes.

Of course this is the weekend again and the game will not perform well as the weekends have the highest load.

  95. Zi Ree says:

@69 Vivienne: Second Life is not really comparable to usual 3D applications. That’s why I wouldn’t do an estimate of time share myself. The viewer has to do a lot of stuff that normal 3D games and applications don’t, like transforming primitive shapes in realtime, streaming network content, dynamically changing the surrounding etc. So, without doing a proper timing and profiling analysis, all numbers here are speculative.

SL shouldn’t use gigabytes of memory, that’s obvious. A lot of people have complained about memory leaks in the viewer, and this might lead to huge consumption of RAM. I didn’t run a memory check myself yet, but I also see the SL process grow in memory over time. It’s something that needs to be fixed, and I’m sure, Linden Lab is aware of this.

  96. Loniki Loudon says:

This RC viewers are a big problem also. People are using them thinking they are going to work better then the regular viewer. They don’t understand these are beta buggy POS’s. LL needs to point this out much better then they are or start taking their reliability a little more serious. Way too many people are using these RCs and then a buggy one goes live and too many people suffer. They need stern warnings that these are ‘Test” viewers and be prepared to go back to a regular viewer if you experience problems.

Viv and so many others who have mentioned, yes, the bots I think will have to go. Too much DB load now, it has gotten to a serious level.

  97. Loniki Loudon says:

Every day the transactions are halted. Now one may point to the asset server but this did not happen regularly till you did this server update. I have also been crashing regularly since this update.

Two days I have had to reset elevators that stopped working, elevators that have been operating for six months straight without a problem. When you went to do this update a week ago and had to turn back the clock, that should have told you something. Playing with it a couple more days and then pushing it through a week later was a BAD idea.

I just got done canceling my classified ad for this next week as this last weeks ad has done nothing. Sales since this update are down 80%. You understand that LL, 80%. Next step is dropping my mainland property and premium account to compensate for this loss. You are creating an environment that is not supporting business.

Words can not express how disgusted I am with SL this week. I hope this Havok 4 upgrade will also dump this latest code you applied to the servers. Also can I suggest you do this stuff at the beginning of the week so there is at least a chance you can fix it by the weekend, typically the busiest days of the week.
