[RESOLVED] Rolling Restart this week Wednesday or Thursday (Feb 6-7)

[Update – RESOLVED 10:22 PM PST] The rolling restart is now complete.

[Update 9:00 PM PST] The rolling restart is now approximately 90% complete.

[Update 8:00PM PST] The rolling restart is now approximately 65% complete.

[Update 7:08 PM PST] The rolling restart is now approximately 50% complete.

[Update 5:58 PM PST] The rolling restart is now approximately 25% complete.

[Update 3:18 PM PST] The rolling restart has begun and should be completed by 8pm PST.

Update 2008-02-06 12:30 : The rolling restart will be this afternoon, starting at or sometime shortly after 2PM.

Residents found a bug that affects rotating and oscillating objects,
which was introduced last week with the 1.19.0 server deploy.
A possible fix for this, as well as for some other bugs, is currently
being tested. We will be doing a rolling restart this week to roll out
the updated server code that includes these bug fixes.

Edit: The update includes a fix for “Show in Search” not applying correctly to objects, mentioned in the public issue tracker.

As with all rolling restarts, this means each region will be down for
five or ten minutes at some point during the day. If your region stays
down more than 20 minutes, use your normal support routes to report
the issue. It is impossible to predict exactly when any given region
will be restarted.

    what’s wrong with sl now! if it isnt one thing it’s another. NOW i got all those tardy noob avi folders mixed between my inventory and library folders. i cant move or delete them. instant LL inventory clutter-spam! geez…

  4. Hopefuly it might help fix:
    1.19.0 (79185) Opening map client freeze/crash, teleport from LM in inventory freeze/crash client.
    1.19.0 (79185) has become almost unusable when I can’t use map or teleport with out Freeze/Crash.
    I hope something can be done soon!

  5. Please, Please, Please don’t let this turn into the same fiasco it did last week !!

    Some of us are trying to run businesses on Second Life.

    Try and make sure.. (Sorry no. not ‘Try’).
    Be CERTAIN that the server deploy is fully tested on a grid and check the results on the first few regions you deploy it to… Sheesh why am I having to tell you this?

    Just PLEASE get it right this time

    Well, this time in SL it is like a year ago.

    Inventory lost, wrong inventory from other people, lag, endless walking under ground, ghost prims counting towards land prims, crashes, group invite not working…just endless!

    … I do not know what to say. It seems there is no improvent.
    I do not know what a rolling restart would help here.

    can’t rez, can’t tp and having other bad asset server failures again. please LL, give out a warning in-world so merchants don’t have to refund tons of things because asset servers are failing and people only find out when they have spent money. thank you.

    Inventory issues are not related to the rolling restart or to the bugs fixed in the rolling restart. They are actively being worked on right now, and have their own blog post.

    Progress of the rolling restart will be updated at the top of the blog post. (Not by me, probably, but by somebody!)

    Re: doing it N-S or E-W, the way we do rolling restarts nowadays is host-based, not geography based. For the forseeable future, that’s how they’ll be done, but I can’t really predict what things will be like two years from now….

    How can i get the information on when ‘a given region’ is restarting?
    Even if you tell me it is moving north to south and you give info on when the first region is is restarting, how can i know when a ‘given region’ is going to be in shedule?
    What is the formula on ‘a given region’ and ‘predict time to restart’?

    as much as i am looking forward to this rolling restart and hope it kills all these little Gizmos that woke up last week i would really appreciate a list of all bug fixes, i don’t quite get it why you keep us guessing, why this secrecy?

    Will people be able to change clothes without a problem? Will traffic update? Will the SVC-930 be reactivated by fixing the search? What about prim objects like hair or shoe bases, will they still not change most of the times?

    I like to believe thats what people would love to know! Thanx

    I have tested my own object (a quick-n-dirty rocking chair, which I probably ought to add to my collection of free objects), and it is indeed working again. (It broke with last Friday’s release.)

    However, I have talked to Talarus Luan, and will look into his object to see if in fact there is something else still broken.

    Re: rolling restarts killing the grid, in fact they do not do that. They do add some load to the database server, but we monitor the rolling restarts as they are going and throttle them back if they are so doing. Sometimes regions fail to come back cleanly; when we hear about them, we fix them. Otherwise, for most, the rolling restart just entails a restart of the region at some point during the restart period.

    I wonder if it might be possible to provide a means within SL to determine whether regions were restarted or about to be restarted, or if it is already there, how we might go about seeing it, like a time stamp or uptime displayed through a Region information dialog, the About window, or the Statistics bar… I know folks would love to know whether a region they retreated into was still due for a restart.

    For ages, rolling restarts ran N/S or E/W. At least they were predictable and one could TP (when it worked) behind the rolling wave until the affected sims came back. Now one has to hop from sim to sim and hope it isn’t to one on the same host.

    Cait Lykin : there is a way. For this rolling restart, do “Help : About Second Life”. In the second block of text you will see something like:

    Second Life Server

    If the last number is 79136, the region has *not* restarted yet. If it is 79368, it *has*. If instead of “Second Life Server” you see “Havok4 Beta Server”, that region is not participating in this rolling restart.

    We’ll try to remember to include this information in the blog post in the future.

    As for whether or not the region is about to be restarted — warnings are given in-world starting 5 minutes before the region restarts.

    Wyald : I don’t know if we’ll be able to generate a list of fixes. I’ll look into it.

    I believe SVC-930 should have been fixed with 1.19.0 as rolled out last week.

    The issue with traffic was actually unrelated to the server release, but had to do with internal processes that had failed to run last weekend. That has been fixed, and traffic should (cross your fingers) update successfully tonight.

    One would think that 45 minutes AFTER the rolling restart has passed through a region that it would be safe to continue working. Not so.

    Deva Loka just went down a second time, with absolutely NO warning. Its not like its just me there – there are generally 15-30 avatars here at any given time.

    I realise that sometimes you need to clean things up, but please… if you have to manually bounce a region, how about a minute or so warning, so I can save scripts and close objects open for edit?

    Deva Loka actually crashed about an hour ago — that wasn’t part of the rolling restart, or part of anything we did premeditatively on our part. Although we’re working on reducing region crashes — and Havok4 will be a big part of that — they do still happen occasionally.

    i dont know what u guys did but i canot move with this rollin re-start….logs in the client and soon it conects eveything freakin thing is gray and i cant even click on friends list or open a profile , i mena i cant do nothing the client just frezzes…is it just me? i have to go to control panel and close it from there cause my process goes up to 100%

    And you still didn’t fix the group IM showstopper, did you. It’s been almost a year now since you made the group IM dysfunctional, pretty sad that you can’t get something as simple as chat, working.

    Glad that the restart is completed, just want to note that a) I can’t upload textures at all anymore and b) after attempting to upload said textures, the upload browser windows won’t open for image, sound, or bulk upload.

    WTF is going on here??? I am trying to delete and take items as part of a move from one location to another. It’s now 5:00am…I would have been done hours ago, if I could deal with more than 5 items betewen crashes. And don’t EVEN try to say it’s my system – my wife sits next to me at her ‘puter and only has 1 crash an hour..scrap yer voice sh*t and fix what is really broken!

    Is logging off for ten minutes really “that” hard to do? Get the notice, log off, wait a bit, then log back on. You’ll come right back to where you were, without having to worry about taking five whole minutes to decide where you’re gona’ teleport to.

    Are people “that” addicted that they’d rather stress out about TPing somewhere rather than just take a break for a few minutes? Wow!

    Try fixing the crashes on teleport and getting logged out when crossing sims. Stop blaming it on the residents PC’s as it’s happening to way too many people to be client side issues.
    But, I still love SL lol.

    Lets keep this state till after valentines day, so people don´t have to take clothes off after tp, already happened through the process…What a mess

    Following the rolling restarts yesterday, whenever I try to edit something the arrows and rotation controls for the prims jitter a lot, to the point where it’s difficult to click on them accurately because they’re moving so much. My avatar also shakes in place when it’s not moving at all.

    Also, crossing sims that haven’t been giving me any trouble in the past week now lags me out completely, and I have no option but to restart SL or it will just say “You have been logged out…” once I get to a certain point underground or into no-mans-land.

    Sounds like there’s a couple more things to work out…

    Everythings so so so so so slow, havent you guys been paying your elecky bill or somethin?

    Can’t build, everythings haywire and mired in lag, packetloss jumpin about upto 50% on windlight and the RC viewer so I went back to the doddery standard one, Packetloss is much improved but SL is still Screwed.

    Thank the gods I only build for fun *hugs* to all those that are trying to run businesses here.

    Hmmm TV suddenly seems so appealing

    Whoops *looks sheepish* Sorry. Its been so stable in recent weeks, when I read about you restarting certain regions manually, I just assumed thats what happened – my bad.
