Knowledge Base Article of the Week #14: Safeguarding your account

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Knowledge Base Article of the Week! This week, we’ll explore a few ways to safeguard your Second Life account and password against phishing and other forms of account hijacking. Just click the link and enter your Support login information to see the article.

Something as simple as using your Second Life password for an account on a third-party website can potentially compromise your Second Life account. Think carefully when choosing your passwords, and don’t give them out to anybody; Linden Lab will never ask you for your account password!

If you’ve got more tips for safeguarding your account, or if you’d like to chat about the Knowledge Base in general, come visit the Documentation team at Documentation Office Hours on Fridays, 2pm PST at our pier office in Beaumont.

See you there!

Jeremy Linden

tomorrow is it`s 1 week aniversery(sp) for the entire website

along with what ever was done to the servers for the past 2 days, would some one at Linden Research please finally open their big yap and start explaining to us (CUSTOMERS!) WTF is going on there???

i doubt this entry would be allowed to stay, a screenshot taken incase it does to be posted else where

    NOW TALK!

  2. Heheheh… well – this *should* be a o brainer. but, what Alicia Sautereau Says.

    Second Life Auction Website Issue
Thursday, January 31st, 2008 at 7:47 AM PST by: rheyalinden
The Second Life Auction Website is currently experiencing various intermittent errors. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

Wow, some one noticed that there are website issues, I wonder if that is becouse that one site is a revenue stream?

Coments are closed, I wonder why.

  4. Stein Straaf says:

LL could help us keeping our accounts from being hijacked, by not making us have to use our inworld names as part of authentication. Pheew, long sentence 🙂

  5. wolfpr magne says:

    thanks!

  6. nika talaj says:

Sorry to respond off-topic as well, but if LL could provide an update to Teeple’s posting earlier this week on the website issues, that would be much appreciated.

People are having Linden purchases not complete due to 503 errors – it’s the entire website, and it’s now been going on for a week. Surely you must know more now about the cause, and projected fix date.

  7. Jeremy Linden says:

For information about the website problems, see this blog post:
    http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/01/28/more-intermittent-website-problems/

Please try to stay on-topic, folks. I feel your pain concerning the website issues, but please try to respect our comment posting rules (as displayed prominently above the comment box).

I enjoy responding to comments that are relevant to my expertise, but unfortunately that does not cover website problems 🙂

  8. Alicia Sautereau says:

    nika, sorry?

they`re the ones who need to get on their knees and appologise to all their customers for a change for the ongoing ….

this blog will most likely be ignored, closed and muffled away as usual as they don`t care about customers but only our money

  9. Isabeau Imako says:

If a new resident should ask me a question about password safety on RA, I will be glad to point them to the Knowledge Base Article #14.
That is if 503 error will let me… I hope SL is doing a better job safeguarding my account information than it is with managing this web site.

OT, thanx for the reminder on passwords. I’m due for a change…

  10. Alicia Sautereau says:

    Jeremy Linden

this has been going on since last week friday!
it was opend and closed several time and then just being ignored with not a single word

offtopic is ignoring customers, this affected: main website, forums, L$ purchases, ingame search and god knows what else and we`re going off topic? lol?

  11. Very Keynes says:

For information about the website problems, see this blog post:
Thanks Jeremy, but that was 4 days ago and comments were closed, it is impossible to stay on topic if the topic is sealed. And as the head custodian of Knowledge, at LL, who better to turn to than you for answers.

  12. Bradley Bracken says:

I can think of 503 reasons why people aren’t staying on topic.

  13. Moll Dean says:

    Oh!
    Comments are open?
I guess there will be a lot of off-topic here. lol

    Well.
    – Do not share your password with your love partner (wife/hursband, boy/girl-friend). This is not a proof of love. heheh.

    Have a great time guys
and LL. please make thing working. Good luck!

    WE LOVE SL

  14. Digital Digital says:

Thank you for the safe-guarding suggestions 😉

  15. Knowledge base, lol. I think that someone in LL needs some knowledge on how to fix things. Lets recap this weeks events.

Top ten Reason why I miss Cory Linden:

    10. Second Life Phone Support Issues.
    9. Difficulties logging in to Second Life.
    8. Intermittent Website Connections.
    7. Intermittent website failures.
    6. More Intermittent Website Problems.
    5. Support Portal Unavailable.
    4. Public Issue Tracker downtime.
    3. Viewing Friends Online on Website Temporarily Disabled.
    2. Land Store Unavailable.
    1. Second Life Auction Website Issue.

Funny how Cory Linden profile was replaced with his RL name, and ever since that time. SL has fallen apart.

And I didnt even talk about yesterday and how the new program was so messed up that you had to roll back all sims.

So has a new CTO been found yet?
Did everyone on the tech team at LL go with Cory?

Just My Spontaneous Rant of the day.

How many Linden Lab employees does it take to change a light bulb?
Answer: Please, everyone, be patient, we’re doing the best we can, it’s not fun for us either, check the blog for updates, and in the mean time, here’s our Torley with “10 Super Fun Things To Do in the Dark!”

  16. Huh. I find this ironic:

Do not follow links that ask for your Second Life account name and password.

This is just asking for trouble. If you need to change your password, click here.

What does that link do? Oh yes, ask for your password. 😛

Some rewording may be in order.

  17. Alisha says:

Thank You Jeremy, changing my password sound like a great idea. If i could get to “my account page” i would do that……

Unfortunately with the site borked I don’t even have a way to verify purchases. Trying to do good customer service with out “Transaction History” is not so fun.

Bad website plus failing transactions is a terrible combination.
Im sure this to shall pass.

Thank you Jeremy for the password strength reminder 🙂

    Alisha

  18. Jeremy Linden says:

    @ Very Keynes:

A valid observation! I am responsible for knowledge regarding how to use Second Life and its associated services. I’m very well qualified to talk with you about what’s in (or should be in) the Knowledge Base, for instance.

However, since I’m not directly involved in the maintenance of Second Life, I’m not always qualified to chat about its working status. It’s my job not to spread disinformation 🙂

  19. Jeremy Linden says:

    @ Katharine Berry

Nice catch! I thought that might make someone laugh a bit…

Linden Lab won’t hijack your account and run amok with it just because you logged into Support. I promise!

  20. Alicia Sautereau says:

    Jeremy Linden

then please drag some one by their hair to start confessing, you`ve got a good bunch of angry people completly being ignored with a service going downhill faster then 20,000 bots can login

IF I can remind every one at LR, your a company with ALOT of users, not a bunch of hobbyist, no communication will get you fried sooner or later™

I am personally done being ignored and shuved in a 503, if no one steps forward and writes a 10,000 paged essay about all these failures again and again, the blog comments better be stayed close

oh, don`t think of letting Phil do it, i`ll nail his vision onto a wall with a 2048×2048 texture of the great 503!

Drag every one in the office to their monitors and show them these comments and each person that reads it and they get ashamed, they should prepare their own blog for posting

I am DONE being ignored, tell those who run this fiasco

  21. Lincoln Lightfoot says:

If I could cut my log ins due to crashes, I would worry about security.

WE ARE ALL CRYING HERE; NO REASON TO LAUGH !!

  23. May is password protection month, wow LL is finally doing something ahead of time. Is this to take our minds off of all the problems. And Jeremy you say that LL won’t hijack your account. But about 6 months before you became a Linden someone did hack the SL database. On September 6 LL discovered evidence that an intruder was able to access the Second Life database through the web servers. The exploit was shut down on the afternoon of September 6 when we discovered it.

Oh and I think I can help with all the technical issues. Or atleast help you find the way to an answer. Today, Thursday from 5pm – 6pm SLT Andrew Linden will be holding office hours on the sim “Content to Hover (128,128,28)” Im sure he will be able to answer all your questions. 🙂
    http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Office_Hours

  24. GetReal says:

The last several afternoons and evenings we have spent hours around the monitor on SL, exploring, shopping and chatting; and login showed we were with maybe 40-50k others do the same things.

The only 503 I saw was to check the blog and leaving and returning made it go away.

Apparently, from the tone of voices here, it has been quite bad for some, but I just had to say that this last week has not been any different for me or the folks I meet inworld.

You guys must all be doing more advanced things than I am doing in world. I hope your experience gets better, Alicia sounds pretty mad.

  25. ZoHa Boa says:

    @15

11: Group Invites are not working. ROles are not loaded.

    Please Wait …..

Sounds like an 503 error …

  26. OMG says:

Hey look another blog post… yay more room for us to bitch and moan.

  27. Very Keynes says:

    Well @OMG

I left the blog to go to an in inworld event, having spent 30 min underground waiting for my clothes to rez, whilst using my camera to watch the event I crashed. Naturaly I relogged and got:

Second Life can’t establish a connection to the login server.

Please check your internet connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Second Life is permitted to access the network.

so I camr back to the blog to see what the update on the roling restrt is, guess what 3 hours after the start and no update.

so, do I go to the event i had planned, do I read the technical updates as adised or do I Bitch and Moan in the blog? your call.

  28. SLick says:

Besides the normal SL issues I have been dealing with for 2 years everything has been fine for me. Well maybe 5 minutes of stuff not rezzing but I re logged and it fixed. There are always gonna be issues with a on MMO such as SL. I think some of you need to know that nothing will every be perfect here and love the good things and get over the bad. If you spend all your time here complaining you might as well move on. I have not gotten a single 503. Maybe the lindens just love me. : P

  29. Benny N. D. Jets says:

About a month ago, I changed my password as a matter of routine as I do for all my passwords for other services that I use frequently and need the highest protection. Since that time, I have been unable to log in with with either a RC or Windlight viewer, but the main viewer has remained unaffected. I would really like to use my Windlight viewer.

When attempting to log in with an RC or Windlight viewer, I immediately receive the red lettered error advising that I have entered an incorrect or invalid user name or password. I do not have the viewer in any case remember or store my password. In fact for any service I use, I always manually enter my user ID and password. I have manually entered and user ID and password with these viewers carefully entering each character.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled these viewers, checked the windows registry for any potential undeleted entries, deleted all the xml files remaining after uninstall for user preferences, all to no avail.

I even thought the authentication service recognized viewer type and did not recognize the new password for the RC or Windlight viewer. Not the case, my old password failed with these viewers too.

  30. Villanova says:

I think you have something important to say you should able to do it within your post and not ask to jump to another page where you have to give your login info again. Call it covenience, user friendliness or customer orientation.
    Thanks.

  31. Alicia Sautereau says:

so moaning and bitching for something people pay ALOT of money for and not deliverd is wrong?

    laugh

    enough is enough

if no one has the guts to openly complain in their faces so be it, but you trolling alt must be a freebie who leech on others so you have nothing to complain about

at this rate people will be spending their money on slIRC and just use sleek as client and not see the difference between now and then

keep spending money on a half arsed product without getting pissed and keep bending over for it to get worse and worse and whine on the day it`s being shutdown, wich would be to late

do the math for an island (easiest and simplest), 1 island costs $295USD a month, forgetting profit margins for a moment, loosing 1 day of service is throwing away $10
say 100 islands are having difficulties, that`s throwing away $1000 per day
now include all island, mainland, transaction fees that decline, failed uploads in some cases, classified wich are unreachable that day, group fees, land listing fees, missed sales from unreachable land etc etc

do the math and even at moderate numbers it`s more then what you earn in a month or several

that every one keeps bending over is beyond my believes, some estate owners pay more a month to LR then i`d earn in a couple of years, yet no one is publicly putting them into place to get their act together but a no one with has nothing to loose

i`ll be damned to be walked over from now on, if alone, then all i can say is “cowards”, if it will be the last thing i do, it will be with degnity and a tidy bit of honor and self respect unlike trolls

    go fetch a camper…

  32. Shai Khalifa says:

    @ Slick – 28

I don’t expect perfect – but as a Premium paying member, I expect WORKING

  33. GetReal says:

Yeah, you . . . you leeching gutless freebie trolling alts!

I get most of it except that fetch a camper part . . .

  34. Alicia Sautereau says:

GetReal, that was for the OMG alt or any smartass to post later wich is locked in their mom`s basement

fetch a camper, fetch a bone, their mostly bots anyway

  35. Qie says:

Jeremy, it’s not fair to you that your blog entry is getting filled with off-topic comments. But it’s not fair to the residents that the other blog posts have comments turned off and aren’t getting any updates, including the 503 error post from about a week ago and the rolling restart that’s supposed to be underway but nobody is sure it’s happening or not. All that isn’t your fault, but your coworkers are not doing you any favors with not-so-forthcoming communications.

(Oh. Passwords. Right, I’ll get right on it, after the 503s clear up so I dare use the website.)

  36. Pepper Haas says:

This same article has been featured forever as a standard link on the login screen. The only point of blogging it this week seems to be to move the blogs with all the downtime announcements, down.

And I agree with the poster who pointed out that if you don’t want off topic posts in blogs that are open for comments, then don’t close comments on other blogs. I get more valuable information from these blogs than any tip I ever got from Torley or you. And if Lindens would truly read these blogs and take the comments to heart maybe things would improve.

  37. Ric Mollor says:

Perhaps those who complain about free accounts need a reminder that the Lindens those free account holders spend subsidizes SL for all.

To put a price of admission at the door here is as sensible as your local real life mall charging admission to shop.

Disagree? Charge admission to *your* sim and see how it helps *your* bottom line.

To stay on topic here. Is there any timeline for removal of the need to log in to access the knowledge base? Certainly it’s possible to obtain enough tracking date from IP addresses alone.

  38. Argent Stonecutter says:

Jeremy: “Linden Lab won’t hijack your account and run amok with it just because you logged into Support. I promise!”

I think the point is that the way these phishing schemes work, they are pretending to be Linden Labs. So you don’t want to be saying “Linden Labs won’t do this”, but rather “if you see this, check the URL that you’re viewing to make sure that you’re really at Linden Labs website. In this case, you’ll see that you are.”

That provides the same assurance, but also encourages safe behavior. 🙂

  39. Argent Stonecutter says:

Ric: “Perhaps those who complain about free accounts need a reminder that the Lindens those free account holders spend subsidizes SL for all.”

If they’re spending Lindens that actually represent money they’ve brought into SL, then by definition they’re not free accounts. 🙂

  40. Noisey Lane says:

Whenever there are website problems, Windlight won’t move past the rotating ‘loading’ icon. Since the GUI is entriely HTML, that means you can’t even enter your name and password to skip this tedium.
But if I revert to the main client or RC I can log in with no problems (mostly).
Who else thinks relying on 2 protocols to access SL means there’s twice as much chance of it getting borked.
My 2 cents is to revert the GUI to the original so we are back to 50/50 odds on getting in!
What do you mean ‘off topic’? – I mentioned the word ‘password’!

@15 – LOL – loved the lightbulb joke. Perhaps as an epilogue it needs:
[RESOLVED] – Light has been restored to the grid. Therefore Torleys Tip of the Week will be saved for tomorrow when it happens again.

  41. Drako Nagorski says:

hmm along with all this crap on the server and website,

theres a nice little bug that lowers and flattens land…. we’ve had this happen a few times on the Stream sim, and, being hired to work on the place, this is no small problem. everything we do gets flattened. buildings and chairs begin to float above the ground. its like everything is sinking under us.

also, when are you gonna reopen the friends online page?
i wanna see my friends online page :////

and please, if you cant keep the game running, make our monthly memberships a little less. for the amount of cash you guys get from us, one would expect that the service is stable. or maybe put a

“Warning, currently experiencing technical mayhem and system failures, along with sever hundred bugs, lack of support, lack of listening from lindens, ect. side effects may include: extreme anger, frustration, lack of trust, lack of money, and lack of hope.”

    label on the signup page.

you guys need to get back in shape. nowhere in the world is customer support so bad. the closest ive ever gotten to talking with a linden is someone who went from SL to LL. all the other lindens just log off when i ask a technical question, or say “check the support portal” which has the support strength of a youtube video.

  42. Ciaran Laval says:

Ok as someone above said, it’s a huge security flaw for our avatar name to be our login. Now I appreciate that that would take a lot of work, but we should have a completely different login name.

Secondly it would be helpful if you explained how many characters we can use in a password, what characters we can use and what characters will mess it up. Is there a maximum limit? Can you use spaces? #? %?

  43. Moll Dean says:

Yes, Alicia. You are in your right to complain and be upsad.
    You got all our attention.
But believe me. LL never listen this blog comments. Never.
We had asked to not force voice feature. Not force age verify. To stop copy-bots… And you know the rest of this history…
We all have inventory lost but no way to back up our own inventory into our RL hard disk.
We all need a simulator to allow us to build things disconected of internet (off-line tolls)
Premiun accounts should have benifits like unlimited inventory storage and attachments.
    More groups to join.
    Etc…

Alice. You better find a good lawyer to make LL CEO listen to you.
Keep it in secret? even CEO knows about SL future. This is all just a laboratory and we are rats paying them. lol
If you are not up to give up and leave forever give LL more chances. Things can be better or get worst. But SL is still the best 3D world you can find today.

  44. Drako Nagorski says:

    43:
“Things can be better or get worst. But SL is still the best 3D world you can find today.”

umm other MMOs are looking so much better… with all the crap we go through, its hard to believe that i dont just grab my wife and run to some other MMO. warcraft anyone?

i don`t want to leave SL, change SL or even lindens listen to us
i want a working grid/site instead of every service that is available crash in turns if not all at once

they need to wake up and get alot of things straight internally, to start with alot more communications to let paying customers wth is going on that there are so many failures

no one expects a perfect world, but as said earlier, for the amount all people pay LL, a working world is something we should atleast expect for that price

Phil, i don`t even want to meet him, he can yap bs where he goes for all i care, this is for all those lindens in the office who actually do something (wrong but that`s another story)
some of them must go to work and be ashamed as they joined it to make it better, not see it slip down

3 weeks from being an year in SL and all i`ve seen in performance is a downward spiral, taking others on their word, that has been going for years

this pot needs to be stirred abit, blogs are open for the world to read so maybe a little rabble will wake up some lindens who actually care and change something on the inside, communication would defenetly be a good start

at what stage does it have to go befor people get pissed while they pay good chunks of money for a service that fails almost daily?
if we aren`t getting near it, it will never come, but some one has to start making some noise at a stage or it never happens

not against freebies as i was one myself when joining, but it was for using it to troll at wich you can add griefing inworld

  51. Gil Druart says:

Trying hard to stay on topic ..

The more times I have to enter my account name and password the less secure it is. SL itself, my account details, the support portal, the JIRA .. goodness. What a lot of places for it to get lost.

And some help could be given for detecting intrusion. Shouldn’t the login page show the time and date of last login? Of course .. that would mostly be five minutes ago …..

  52. Beatrix MacKay says:

What about 3rd party viewers after SL is open source ?
What if someone writes a viewerchnage that grabs passwords and account name ?
Are 3rd party viewers checked by LL or is thsi party of the viewer code not available for 3rd party viewer creators ?

  53. Zito says:

SL Now with more BUGS than a roach Motel!!! GOT LAG? No matter how you slice it sl will always have problems everytime theres a new upgrade more bugs comeout of the sl cornflake box, i myself am a paid member for what i ask myself to get L$300 a week when it should be L$500 or more damm i even spend RL money in the hunderds to make my store & home look good. Maybe i should get like the freeloader & live off the fat of SL.

  54. Moll Dean says:

    oh yeah DRAKO

I would love to check others 3D World like SL. I heard about chinese: Hipihi. But still in beta version.
I do love SL and I do not want to leave. Me and 30k real avs just want things working here.
You know what I MOST hate here? lol… it is when one post ends with “thank you for your patience”.
It is more sarcastic and ironic than any comments some people post here.

    oh! Passwords
You better check for spywares/spybots on your machine and avoid to use public computer.
Mix letter and numbers to make your password.
If you can use PayPal here use a diferent password.
To be sure you are at the official SL website type the url beside following a link.
Do not use your SL password into 3rd companies.

    hey! on topic ;D

BTW. These SSL the website uses does not allow me to login into my account with my mobile phone. (not mine).

  55. Argent Stonecutter says:

Oh yes, I agree with Ciaran. We really need to have the account and the avatar name separate. Ideally you’d log on to the *account* and then (if you have alts) select the avatar you’re going to log in as from there.

  56. Robot Foxley says:

Why are we talking about password security all of the sudden? Was something compromised?

The asset server is being wack. I cannot save landmarks, get deliveries from SLX at this time, or log in. Why worry about someone getting my password? If it gets any worse I might just give it away to the hackers.

    :p

  57. Kristopher Handrick says:

    @ 56

Agreed, why even bother to worry when I can’t even log in. Laughs! Go ahead, steal my password, have fun and do your worst. IF YOU CAN GET IN! LOL

As a precaution, it is best not to rez no copy items until we give an all clear. Please watch the blog for updates: http://blog.secondlife.com/

anyone else have a problem with what i`ve said? service failure after another?

how can i protect my inventory from unauthorized database issues? 😛
    just kidding.
i guess if theres any day to have rolling restarts and database issues its the day 1/4 of the planet got cut off from the internet because of a boat anchor… (that cut an undersea comms cable in the middle east)
yea… its the boat anchor’s fault!

We are talking about password login code will chance. Not sure what is going to change but a anti-bot (not you. lol) would be welcome.
It is those jpeg images with letters/numbers you have to read and type into a text field before you click loggin button. That means there is a human action.

They are setting this new code since 16th… but just tell us one week later. I am quite sure about this.
Voice feature codes were also added one week before and the grid suffered by bad performance just like two weeks ago until today.

    Password?
Do not use your birthday lol

@ Jeremy Linden and all the Lindens,

How about keeping comments open instead of frequently closing them off to your Customers, thus forcing us to blog here about the things not necessarily related? The blog is about the only way for most Customers who are *Suffering* from poor performance in SL to vent and to bring up issues with others suffering from the same issues so that we know we are not alone. Beta JIRA is a joke… There are outstanding show stopper issues still in there from two months ago. Yet Lindens continuously close comments, which makes for more frustration. If you continue to limit your Customer feedback, then how is it you expect to actually enforce your previous blogs about making a concerted effort to start listening to your customers?

As usual comments closed and you wonder why you get off topic posts?

The most off topic posts on teh blog are from Lindens not telling us what we need to know when we need it. you give us [RESOLVED]s on none respolved issues and blogs about old, well known issues but no information on what you are doing to REALLY fix anything.

  63. Moll Dean says:

I would love to backup my own inventory.
Yes Alice. We understand you. LL do not undestand us.

Those who are new here should know that Asset Server Issues can result in object lost. Forever. With no refund or replacement.

    Be aware guys

    Passwords?
    ummmm…
write it down at some note paper for emergency case. Like if your memory fail. Oh. your wallet could be a safe place to keep it.

Thanks Jeremy it always a good reminder to keep up to date with security easy to forget.

For some people have problems with connecting to the site a cause might be this:
    http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/01/31/dubai.outage/index.html
There has been a big net cable damaged so some for many the issues of connecting may have nothing to do with Linden Labs.
    It quotes this:
“Pacific cables and that companies serving the eastern US and the UK were worst affected, AP added.”

Jeremy, please include something about paypall phishing as well. Many residents use this in relation to SL.

Use a password that is hard to remember.

    Then forget the password.

This procedure will save you from suffering any lack of SL-services, lag, inventory loss and it even makes age verification obsolete. Just voice will remain inaudible….

@24 “You guys must all be doing more advanced things than I am doing in world. I hope your experience gets better, Alicia sounds pretty mad.”

You obviously haven’t tried to use SEARCH or HELP or the FORUMS.

  71. Kerik Rau says:

    Tip #15:

Do not use the same password on multiple services. If you get a breach chances are the exploiter will attempt to access other known services (ie email).

using a prefix or suffix based on the service name/type may be a good idea, but if the exploiter is human they may be able to guess your algorithm.

  72. Stephe Ehrler says:

If you’re concerned about our accounts being hijacked, you then make us use our real inworld user name and “secure password” to login to this questionably secure website (half the time the security certificates fail) to read about how to keep it secure? Why does ANYONE need to log in to read the SL knowledgebase? That makes ZERO sense, what are you trying to protect doing that? I can understand accessing an account or scheduling an event, but to READ ONLY some webpages of tips and help? Why must we “log in” to do that? Seems that is just adding one more place someone could steal our ID or password for absolutely no reason whatsoever..

  73. FireFox Bancroft says:

Careful with the wording there “Linden Lab will never ask you for your account password”

Shouldn’t that be “Linden Lab EMPLOYEES will never ask you for your account password”?

  74. Sean Heying says:

    # 41 Draco “theres a nice little bug that lowers and flattens land…. we’ve had this happen a few times on the Stream sim, and, being hired to work on the place, this is no small problem. everything we do gets flattened. buildings and chairs begin to float above the ground. its like everything is sinking under us.”

No, that’s not a bug, that is someone with terrain ability going into the terrain tab and hitting smooth then apply without selecting a portion of land first.

Pressing apply without selecting does the whole parcel or whole sim depending on the layout.

I know… I’ve done it a few times, but having baked my terrain it’s fairly easy to revert when you make the mistake.

Backup your terrain often through baking.

  75. Sean Heying says:

This is what “Closed Comments” results in….
Luckily, this may be in Jeremy’s baliwick:

Jeremy Linden: “I am responsible for knowledge regarding how to use Second Life and its associated services. ”

    http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/02/01/fix-may-cause-problems-for-scripts-relying-on-long-object-names-and-descriptions/
Matthew Linden: “As part of the rolling restart we implemented a fix for an issue on the Public Issues Tracker, SVC-997.”

Can someone tell me why the “Public Info Tracker” refuses to allow me (even when logged in) to view the contents of SVC-997? I’d like to know what this fix is that’s breaking content.

  81. Desdemona Enfield says:

    Greetings Jeremy,

A few of my friends have been playing with Movable Life (moveablelife.net), which seems to be a gateway that provides a web browser interface into SecondLife. The catch is, of course, that you must provide them with user name and password so that their systems can log in as you.

Aside from the password security issue, is not the use of Movable Life a violation of the SL TOS?

Seems to me Jeremy has accomplished something interesting here,

    Divide and Conquer, LOL

People have started bitching at each other and forget to attack the Lindens, LOL, more work for Jeremy and maybe even a promotion for keeping the focus off LL and have the people concentrating on each other’s issues instead.

  83. Desdemona Enfield
Aside from the password security issue, is not the use of Movable Life a violation of the SL TOS?

I believe Linden Lab’s (unofficial?) position is that they “can’t encourage you to use” hosted viewers (see this post – fourth paragraph under “Acknowledgements”). However, given I haven’t been banned yet, they also don’t appear to ban you for running or using such services.

Essentially, it’s a personal decision. But Linden Lab would really, really like it if you decided to keep your password to yourself.

  84. Fellatione Aabye says:

Dear Linden to avoid .. Phising etc …

STOP your cooperation with a company of bad reputation as Intergrity … YOU gave them a BLIND CHECK to abuse the possible data given by residents ….

Btw in Europe where i live … even justice dept knows about the BAD REP of that company

  85. How can we safeguard our accounts from Linden Lab?

Web site always down (if you can’t run one of those, how do you expect to do it with a complex database system?)

Money missing, inv missing, objects poofing…

  86. Oh right, I forgot about “Integrity” that alone has me rolling in the aisles.

Any news on when Europeans might be able to actually verify, or is that actually going to prove to be impossible with our data protection laws?

Or will you just roll it out anyway regardless as usual?

  87. U M says:

    “503 Service Unavailable
The service is not available. Please try again later.”

Well we ever get a fix for this……………..Ok its off topic but come on! This is out of hand!
