Financial Statements For Everyone!

Many Residents use Second Life in a professional capacity. As such, being able to both keep and present detailed records of financial transactions is vitally important. To help you with this, we’ve added a new page to the “Your Account” section of the website: Account Statements.

You can now download individual monthly statements for each past month of your account’s existence, listing all of the US Dollar (not Linden Dollar) transactions between you and Linden Lab. These statements include each invoice and each payment you have made to Linden Lab for that month. There is also a summary section where transactions are grouped with totals for each type of transaction — so, for example, Europeans can see all of their VAT expenditure in one figure. The statements are downloadable in PDF format, which means you’ll need a PDF viewer (such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, or the PDF viewer included in Mac OS) to look at them.

We’re still tweaking the system here and there to make it more applicable to each country’s tax office; if yours has requirements that the statements don’t meet, please let us know in this survey. We hope you find the system useful!

Update: Some residents are seeing problems when trying to download statements using Internet Explorer, and also with fetching statements from April and earlier. Thanks for the bug reports! We hope to have fixes in place for both of these within the next day or so.

Second Update: The bugs listed above have now been fixed. Sorry about that!

Need November’s Econ-reports… Someone drop the ball here or ya all hiding some embarassing stuff, trying to figure out hw to make it look better than pathetic ? ……

  2. theboi Umarov says:

my countries tax office has a requirement – the company charging VAT must have a UK based Head Office to charge VAT – will this be shown on the statement so that i have Linden Labs VAT number??

  3. Redux Decosta says:

Oh that’s handy! i’ve been rueing printing all my bank & paypal records out & going through a year of transactions with a highlighter! TYTYTY~!

So we getting 1099’s too? ^_^

  4. Perefim Cao says:

been looking foward to something like this, only problem is I go to “View” and it just takes me to your client download… umm.. wtf O.o?

  5. Kinzo Nurmi says:

    @theboi Umarov

Linden Lab does have an office in the UK. I am sure if you submitted a support ticket, you can get their VAT number.

  6. Liderc Dagger says:

Nice, “Bill To” says Lilly Dagger, maybe she can pick up my bill then whoever she is? lol

  7. andrew johnson says:

it so good – that’s good so i would keep records

  8. Lex Neva says:

Wow, very nice. This will make tax time much easier.

  9. Holly says:

    8. Due to VAT regulations, I need Linden Lab’s VAT registration ID.

Our VAT registration ID is EU826011179.

It’s in the Knowledge Base, but doesn’t show on my Account Statement.

  10. Yoz Linden says:

@theboi Umarov: That’s a great suggestion, thank you! We’ll work on getting that added pronto.

@Perefim Cao: That’s bizarre. I’ve tried, but I can’t reproduce your bug. Could you supply the details of your web browser version and operating system so we can investigate further?

  11. pc says:

    Cool !! Thanks but..
    echo number 2
Guess it must be your brighton branch, right ??
    So whats the number ?

  12. camillayosuke says:

excellent !! This is an awesome improvement !

oddly, I cannot get statements older than march 2007.
They do appear in the pull down menu, but when I select ‘feb 2007’ for instance, then press ‘view’, it freezes my browser ( both Mozilla and Konqueror )

  13. HealthStar says:

Taking me to the viewer download page too (IE 6.0.2). Only in months when I have no transactions though. Perhaps thats the issue, if it doesnt find any Dloadable transactions it sends you there?

  14. Yabu Yifu says:

it is taking me nowhere 😦 after hitting the view button it trie to redirect me somewhere and then i get a 404 error. i guess LL is probably fixing the probs as described before 🙂

i’m looking very forward to this new function 🙂 good job! makes the administration indeed probably much easier!

  15. Darien Caldwell says:

A very nice addition for users. Can I suggest that Excel downloads of In-World Transactions include the Region where the transaction originated, as is shown on the web-page view? This would be a very useful addition. 🙂

  16. Sascha says:

Yes, like camillayosuke already said, I can only go as far back as May2007, April is no working for me, i get an empty page :(.

  17. want back in says:

Sorry for the off topic guys, but i dont know where to ask…
I havent been on sl for a couple of months (rl issues) and now, when i try to log in it says waiting for “region handshake,” then it says log in failed try again later or click help. The help button didnt work, I got a blank screen. I also uninstalled and re-installed Second Life, but to no avail. I still cant log in… Can anyone tell me what to do?
It seems this was a problem some time ago, so im wondering if i am the only one who dont know what to do abt it, since i wasnt here when it was a “common” problem.. Thanks

  18. Keiko Rau says:

More fluff for the corporates.. Im amazed that IBM and the like arent also complaining about teleport and other bugs enough to get those fixed rather than still more new features for the corporate users.

As a private individual, heres my first thought… Ok, so now we have a piece of paper with our REAL name and our AVATAR name on the SAME PAGE. That concerns me. Even when viewed on the screen rather than printed, I cant recall anywhere else on the SL website where this happens, with perhaps that other badly thought out new addition (age verification) being the only exception.

Im not worried personally – Ive already linked my real name with my avatar name on my employers internal website, as well as with friends, so people do know who I am, but I am very protective of my personal information. Its one thing for me to disclose my avatar’s real identity, but its entirely another for you to do so.

Please change our account numbers to an account NUMBER. I know you have them – there are several unique numbers passed as cookies in the account pages, not to mention our avatar key etc.

  19. theboi Umarov says:

thanks Yoz – it is a complication – in the UK we are used to having the VAT number displayed on our reciepts and invoices – i would as i am sure many more UK users be happier to see such a thing prominent on a financial statement – With all due respect, i have thought that this hasn’t been right and spot on. As the law of averages states that no-one is going to have an individual thought perhaps such things that have affected many people are made more clearer. This would allow more trust in a company. However on a brighter note it is always good to see such improvements that make our financial situation clearer. (though the addition of sterling to the lindex would be even better (one can hope)).

Keep up the good work and improvements. As a mentor i can feed these out to people i know and pass on the good news.

  20. Kathy Morellet says:

My statements for every month prior to May ’07 just come up blank.

  21. Ben Turas says:

The invoice for the island purchase is missing, could that be added ?

    Thanks !

  22. Yoz Linden says:

@Kathy Morellet and others: Verified. Thanks very much for the bug report, we’ll get on fixing that.

    WTF!?!

I looked (of course) and have not found this. Am I missing something?

  24. Classy Patton says:

This is a great addition, but no records will open for me not even last month, let alone earlier 😦

  25. elvisorbit says:

Works good and I like it. My Address was wrong so I sent in a support ticket for it. A change of address from would be helpful.
Thanks and keep up the good work.

  26. Sean Heying says:

Wow, cool thing, now I can see how many thousands of US$ I spend.

One thing though, most of my older statements are blank white page. Mac Intel Leopard running on Firefox.

The newer ones are right though.

  27. Coyote Momiji says:

Oh goody, now I can file my taxes properly.

  28. Bobo Decosta says:

    Finally !!!!!!! 🙂

    Thank you LLL

  29. Seth Ock says:

Yoz, thanks this is nice. Good job keeping up with messages here, too!

  30. Allison says:

This is nice, and a step in the right direction for business owners, but can we correct information such as name or address? The contact info section under My Account only allows one to update an email address.

Also, can I link this somehow to my RL business entity?

  31. This is a great feature and well overdue but why were L$ transactions excluded from the feature?

  32. Holly says:

I didn’t see a way to do it on the website, so I called support and updated my address… I didn’t put one in when I created the account way back when. 🙂

Is there a form for that? Contact Info just has my email address.

  33. Gigs says:

Thanks, this has been needed for a while.

    Two issues:

    1. The filename is always doc.pdf, please change this to a meaningful name like the month and year.

    2. LindeX transactions are still broken up into a million tiny transactions. When I sell 100,000 lindens, I don’t need to see every partial clearing of the order on my history, that adds thousands of lines to my history with a value of $1-$4… very useless and annoying.

  34. Darien Caldwell says:

I can’t get this feature to work in IE 7. works in Firefox, but IE 7 Seems a no go. I had Adobe Reader 7, so installed 8.11, no change. FYI

  35. Gigs says:

Oh, and could we get CSV format too, if it wouldn’t be too much trouble?

  36. Yoz Linden says:

Okay, we’ve diagnosed the Internet Explorer and blank PDF issues, and are testing preliminary fixes for both of them. Thanks to everyone who provided the helpful bug reports!

With regard to other issues and questions:

Adding Linden Lab’s VAT ID to the statements, and Gigs’s suggestion for better filenames: Both of these should be fairly easy, and we’ll address them once we’ve got the bugs above fixed.

Updating personal information (from Holly and Allison): Great point. As you say, Residents can have their personal information record changed by going through Support, but obviously it’d be much easier for everyone if there was a web form for this. We’ll take a look.

CSV format (from Gigs): Ooh, interesting suggestion – for spreadsheet import, right? It’s unlikely to happen any time soon, but I’ll add it to the feature request list.

Lots of tiny LindeX transactions (Gigs again): Yep, that does look annoying. We’ll see if we can find an easy way of clustering those.

  37. How about a similar history for Linden transactions instead of just USD?

  39. Cold Spitteler says:

excellent feature! and i would like to thank Yoz, it is great that you are listening to peoples requests 🙂 and being open with the whole process even in saying that a solution may be far off

  40. Keiko Rau says:

    @Yoz

I realise my first paragraph in @18 may have prevented you from reading the rest of my comment about exposing a link between our avatar name and our real name, but I believe its an important point, so if you skipped over it, could you please take a look.

    @BeeBee, #23
    | I looked (of course) and have not found this. Am I missing something?

Yep, its right there. The avatar name is in the Statement Number at the top right, and the real name is in the “Bill To” section on the left. Its the same in another statement Ive seen, posted as an example on a popular news site, so I know its not just me.

Even on the “My Account page”, Linden Lab does not link your avatar name with your real name anywhere on the web site, and I for one feel that this is a precident that doesnt need setting here. My original comment on this is in #18 above.

I understand that its in the “logged in” section of the web site, but if they are on a page together, anyone can see it over someone’s shoulder, printed copies can be inadvertantly left around, and with persistant cookies, if you forget to log out, anyone could potentially access your account and see it. (Yes, thats a broader issue, but at least prior to this there was nothing that I can think of to link the two, even if that did happen).

  41. Panacea Pangaea says:

I see the VAT being charged in the statement, and it is correctly deducted from the balance, but the End Balance seems to have reverted back to the pre-VAT amount – i.e. the End Balance is not the same as the last running Balance entry.

  42. Toad Mougin says:

Thanks Lindens for adding this feature – really useful !!

  43. JustMe says:

Am I the only one who finds the form mildly confusing about USD being paid (tier fees…) and being received (cashout…) from Linden Lab?

Of course, it’s all correctly described and all the information is there, but breaking it down into two sections with money paid and money received or maybe something like – / + -signs in front of the amounts would be easier to read.

    Think of the tax offices…example:

“Cashout by Paypal” is money I get.
“PayPal Cashout Fee” is money I pay.

Both are listed now as positive USD amounts one after another in the summary.

Then there are these USD amounts in brackets which supposedly reflect your USD balance on your Linden Lab account.

All in all, I’d like to see this broken up more clearly, so it’s easier to read, not only for me, but most of all for the tax office.

    Thanks in advance!

  44. Vittorio Beerbaum says:

Yuppo, but i don’t understand (or im missing something here) why we doesn’t have a log of inworld transactions longer than 30 days. I’ve to save my selling every 15 days, because there are 31 days months and if you miss the “last” day you gonna loose the first day of the month transactions. I know this impact on the storage space, but come one, even the basic (and free) systems have at least a 3 months log.. im not asking the same but *at least* a 45 days back log would be apprecciated.

  45. Awesome improvemet. Better late then never, thank you! Due to the money that is exchaged between some of us and LL (eg tier) this was MUCH needed and I often thought it weird we were not given monthly tier receipts for our large payments.

I don`t know if it is not going to work until a December 2007 option is put up, but I have earlier options from 2006 and I can not get them to display anything. I`m using IE.

  46. Alyx Sands says:

I wonder why people would want to hide their avatar name on a statement for the tax office? Anything to hide then? Or do you think the tax office sends tax bots stalking you in world? 😉

I think it’s a very useful addition to have printable statements anyway and am now considering to actually hand them in for tax returns…saves a lot of work.

  47. Ann Otoole says:

Thanks for the statements. Firefox will not open a pdf on my pc for some reason but its something to do with my pc only. But I am pleased to see you providing this type of reporting product.

What i and countless others need is the Region column populated in the Excel/CSV output. The Region column is always null in the current transactions history report. If you could populate the region column in the existing transaction history report in the excel/CSV output you would be helping us immensely.

    Thanks.

  48. mimi says:

Alyx yes some of us do. I don’t want the tax office to know I’m a I’m a scat obsessed shemale furry escort!!!

  49. HoneyBear Lilliehook says:

While this is awesome, I’d love to see the same thing available for the Linden Dollars spent and received. I just can’t understand why we can only track that information for 30 days, which doesn’t even cover a full month some months out of the year.

  50. Jak Digital says:

The statement errored out on me whenever I try to use it. Not to be rude but did you test this new feature – lol. Hopefully one of these days I can see it work and see if I even need it:-)

  51. Ceera Murakami says:

Well! THANK YOU! This is really great, and as an SL business owner this is going to be extremely useful at tax time! And I like the fact that it is JUST the cash-in, cash out, and fees for transactions, and not the whole transaction history with all the in-world content purchases listed. When I use this as documentation for my tax info, I only WANT to show them what actually entered the real world and my real banking accounts.

It works for me on my work Win XP PC with Firefox, but not with Internet Explorer 6. Haven’t yet checked with Safari or Firefox on my Mac.

It would also be useful, as a merchant, to be able to get at least a year’s full past history on ALL in-world transactions, so when a customer says “I bought a couch from you on the 20th of last month, and it never got delivered.” I can check that even if it happened more than 30 days ago. Most people do contact merchants rapidly if they don’t get what they paid for, but sometimes…

A full year’s worth of reports on all in-world transactions would also make it far easier to track fees paid for mall space and retail parcels, fees paid for classified ads, and other ‘legitimate business expenses’ of running a business in-world. For example, if I build a sim for someone, and the fee I charge them includes the cost of the multimedia systems and trees and a couple swimming pools that I buy from other SL merchants, then I should be able to indicate that out of that fee that they paid me, I can deduct X dollars that was spent on materials used in their build and transferred to them.

  52. Allison says:

    Thank you Yoz.

  53. Trevor Langdon says:

    @51 Ceera
“A full year’s worth of reports on all in-world transactions”

Yes, this is needed (30 days is way to short). I would also like to have the option added to have transaction history emailed on a monthly basis, so it doesn’t require it to be done manually. As it is currently, it’s too easy to miss capturing your transaction history in the 30 day window. I have plenty of gaps in my transaction history due to this very thing. Also, when I go on vacation, I don’t want to have to worry about connecting and downloading the transaction history inorder not to lose some of the records.

I don’t do enough inworld business (yet) to cash out, so the L$ transaction history is the most important for me.

I hope you consider this and also extend the length of time the L$ transaction history is available (and even better would be the inclusion of an option to have it automatically emailed on a monthly basis to the email address on file for the account).

  54. Farallon Greyskin says:

Yearly or quarterly statements would be nice.

But first of all it needs to work. Is it off line now? I get nothing for any month. It either just sits there with “connecting…” or dies with a non existant webpage for any month on IE7.

I sure hope this isn’t going to be like the land store where only a minority of users could use it 😦

  55. Farallon Greyskin says:

Site is working for me now. It’ll save a LOT of time browsing the transaction logs. 🙂

  56. Very Keynes says:

IH Damn, now I have to declare my SL income as its documented 🙂

  57. Crucial Armitage says:

This is a vast improvement from the past where we were only allowed to view the past 45 days of transactions.
    Thank you very much
I do have a suggestion though is listing every single L$ transaction actually necessary? I always wondered about this because in the Linden x transaction history https://secure-web8.secondlife.com/currency/history.php lists totals for sales of L$ but on the account history https://secure-web8.secondlife.com/account/history.php it has always shown each individual Linden X trans action which is really useless to us as far as i can see.

  58. Yoz Linden says:

As the updated blog post says: The initial bugs are now fixed. Next we plan on adding the VAT ID to the template and also having a more relevant filename by default.

In response to some points raised:

Explaining the layout (for JustMe): Numbers in parentheses are negative – this is standard accounting shorthand. Negative numbers in the statement effectively mean “amounts that reduce the balance you owe us”: so when we collect money to settle your balance, that’s considered a negative adjustment. When you cash out L$, that’s a negative adjustment. When we assess you for land fees, that’s a positive adjustment, etc.

About linking SL name with real name (from Keiko Rau): We’ve chosen to go this route with the statement ID because we figure that the usefulness of this format, for both Residents and us, outweighs the potential problems. That’s not to say that we wouldn’t consider changing it (depending on Resident feedback) and the point you raise is certainly a pertinent one.

Regarding L$ transaction reports: The main reason that we limit reports to 30 days at present is that the volume of L$ transaction data that we collect is significantly larger than the volume of US$ transaction data. This means that we collect and store it in a different way, and that querying large amounts of it on demand is more challenging. However, I can certainly see the value in making larger reports available. I’ve started looking into that, and talking to the relevant folks here about how much work it would be (and also for recording the region in which a transaction happened). If it’s going to happen, it won’t happen for a while yet, but nor does it seem so much work that we’d rule it out entirely. That’s the most I can say at this stage.

  59. @ Post #46: “I wonder why people would want to hide their avatar name on a statement for the tax office? ”

Why not? I personally would. All my accounts on other websites where I have a user name do NOT disclose that user name on forms. So why do LL insist on doing that for everything?

  60. JustMe says:

    @Yoz Linden:

Thank you for the explanation. Not sure I am getting it completely yet, but maybe I have to look up standard accounting a bit. Still hard for me to see at first glance which amount is income and which is expense. Must be me…Cashout by paypal and paypal cashout fee both without parentheses? *confused* well…

Another thing that came to mind: It seems the “Issue Date” is always set to the current date, when you download the statement. Is that by design? Does that make any sense? Shouldn’t it better always be set to the last day of each month? If I download my statements next year for tax declaration they will all be dated next year instead of this year…and if I download the same statement several times on different days they are not identical although they should be…any thoughts?

  61. Alisha says:

For quiet a while, at least 3 years, We have been told Never to connect our RL and SL identities. Is this a change in policy, perhaps due to IDV?

For basic security reasons, please replace our AV name with a number. There must be a reason I can not find my RL information anywhere on your website. Why start here?
