Winter Festival 2007 – Registering Events and Venues

[UPDATE] Please remember that WinterFest Linden is the proper target for your registration packet drops 🙂 Dropping them on other Lindens (including me) may not get them registered in time.

*****

Season’s Greetings, and I hope the day finds you both prosperous and well!

You good folks are putting together some extraordinarily festive experiences for one another. (Yes, I’ve been peeking. Please don’t tell my parents.)

So: How to register these wonderful occasions? Here’s what you need to know:

Please review the guidelines for WinterFest events and venues, posted here.

  • On the support portal, there’s a new Special Questions – Basic Account or Guest Login question type called Winter Festival. Please create a ticket of that question type. (Note: The question is set up that way so that everyone can use it. If you have full support access, we do ask that you log in first, but it’s not a requirement.)
  • On your ticket, tell us about your venue or event:
  1. Start date and end date (for a venue), OR Date + start and end time (PST) for an event
  2. The main host or hostess name (for an event)
  3. A title (max. 35 characters)
  4. Up to four lines of descriptive text (max. 35 characters each).
  • Once we accept the event, make note of your ticket number. It’ll look something like 4051-2222222. (Please ignore that “4051-” prefix. It’s the rest of the number that serves as a key to your event.)
  • In world, prepare a folder with your ticket # as the folder name.
  • In the folder, put three copy-enabled assets:
  1. The snapshot you want to display to show your setup off. That should be named exactly the same as your title (#3, above).
  2. A landmark. Name it exactly the same as your title (#3 above), and stick ” landmark” at the end.
  3. A note card with your descriptive text (#4 above). That should be named exactly the same as your title (#3 above), with ” notecard” at the end.

So, to recap: Say, for example, you’ve put together an event called “Grinch Egg Hunt” and had it accepted under Ticket #4051-9999999. Your in world registration packet would be one folder containing three copy-enabled assets, packed this way :

9999999

Grinch Egg Hunt

Grinch Egg Hunt notecard

Grinch Egg Hunt landmark

  • Last step: Find WinterFest Linden in world and drop the folder on his profile.

You’re done. Set out the eggnog!

Try to give us at least 12 hours’ lead time on registering events, please.

Eggnog. Mmmm…..

It’s great to have a Winter Festival. Let’s have some fun and movement around here!

However I need to ask again… Where is the October 2007 Economic Key Metrics??? and November 2007? Today is 12/12.

  2. Aloe Stradling says:

Yeah, schedule in advance! Like for yesterday, only to have SL gone all day.

Or now for example. Can’t login due to it says Login failed, inventory unavailable. Seems the secret to SL is keepiung it slightly more fun than it is frustrating

  3. Anny Helsinki says:

because you clode the important thread about the inventory-losses last night, i will post here.

i lost a Huddle with 40 dances. that means nearly 12.000Lindens.

I wrote Soft Linden a IM, he has a complete Copy of my inventory.

He should be able to give me back the Huddle and the dances.

    please , please help.

  4. Aloe Stradling says:

“because you closed the important thread about the inventory-losses last night, i will post here.”

If you leave threads like that open for comment, people might… you know… Say things you don’t want them to.

I am missing the oddest assortemnt of individual clothings from a few folders. No folders completely missing. I’m cranky as hell about it, but, I admit, I’m still hooked and love SL, even with all the snags.

Like crotch prims. I’ve been here a YEAR, and they seem unable to prevent prims form being all shoved uncomfortable places on TP.

  5. Sean Heying says:

    > Like crotch prims. I’ve been here a YEAR, and they seem unable to prevent prims form being all shoved uncomfortable places on TP.

Not as bad as the new bug where the earth starts shaking violently, your Av folds in half and your stick your head in your behind.

Rumour is that Nicholaz Beresford has found the bugfix for this.

And Teeple is one of the worst for closing his posts, so I actually don’t feel bad being off topic.

  6. mant says:

login failed “the inventory system is unavailable”

its like dajavu again … every update lol something goes wrong please rename it to downgrades cause thats all we get …come on…

  7. Anita Schwartzman says:

login failed inventory unavailable…two thumbs up for saying its resolved in the blog about it….

  8. By ‘Winter Festival’ do you meen ‘Christmas’ ?

  9. Ceejay Harvey says:

    No_inventory_ho ho host.

At this rate my christmas will be Scrooged

  10. Farallon Greyskin says:

#8 “By ‘Winter Festival’ do you meen ‘Christmas’ ?”

    For some yes…

  11. Alicia Sautereau says:

as every other blog is closed, wanna fix the goddamn “no inventory server” login error as i can`t login?

  12. the bat says:

#8 “By ‘Winter Festival’ do you meen ‘Christmas’ ?”

    For some yes…

Hey , lay off the divisive comments , its christmas everywhere, if you celebrate it or not , last time i looked it was “goodwill to all men” , not “goodwill to those i share a belief with ” .
Less “selfism” , “nationalism” and “religious fundamentalism” – and a bit more goodwill and we might just straighten this planet out.

    Peace .

  13. pantaiputih korobase says:

it is goodwill for those for whom SL works LMAO

  14. pantaiputih korobase says:

btw SL gets slower and slower with each update

  15. Ric Mollor says:

In addition to the missing Economic Key Metrics (we already know things are in a decline) how about a official comment on the departure and rumored firing of Lindens Labs Chief Technology Officer?

There is a strong possiblity that the customers, errr, residents of Second Life would like an explanation and some reassurence that SL will continue as usual after the lead tech guy cleans out his desk.

I’m wanting SL to improve not continue “as usual”.

  17. Fellatione Aabye says:

Hi Everybody at Linden Labs ….

No Merry Xmas from me in any case …. Because … the SL present under my Xmas tree was again a NOT SO GOOD Update …. (Tped 1 time and crashed again and again …)

SO How can a SL citizen Plan well in advance a “Event”, investing in it his Lindens$ (in some cases lots of Linden$) and then I pass upon the fact that they already send out notes to their friends / customers /clients … that on that day their will be an “Event” … and Partytime in Linden Labs … DOWNTIME !!!!! (ie .. Would like to see the face if your CEO if he ever would come to belgium and has to wait for hours on end after his chauffeur driven car? Well I would then gladly answer at the phone … We thank you for your patience …. Don t think that HE would like that answer … Cose …. such phrase … has the death penalty in my line of work … )

So dearest Linden, can you please give us, for once, an HOW TO .. to plan inadvance an “Event” without a) Loosing money b)Without loosing Face in front of the other SL Citizens?

You may be very lucky that the US SL Citizen is realy mild with you … because in Europe … where i live … YOU would already have had lots and lots of Bad Press ….

    Jingle bells Jingle Bells

    LOOOOOLLLL .. and up to the next DOWNTIME …. (sorry I m bad… )

  18. Melanie Milland says:

Maybe LL does listen (sometimes) and can revise their policy on closing blog for service announcements.

There will always be people to bitch and moan, whine and rant, an it is better to let them do that, blow off steam, on topic, on the very announcements that relates to their gripes, than too let them post off topic on whatever blog post happens to have open comments…

  19. Taff Nouvelle says:

wow, all the posts suddenly stopped, that must mean that SL is open, working, and there are no login problems, patience people, they said it would take some time, it did, and its up again, have a good evening :-))

  20. Thank you Teeple. I’ll be filling out that info for a venue.

I, for one, am looking forward to a winter festival in SL (whilst I enjoy the heat of summer in RL) and know that, even with all the glitches and unforseen downtime, LL is striving to produce a better environment for its community. With such a rapid, unforseen increase in numbers of citizens these hiccups are to be expected.

I hope all the new citizens, as well as the old ones, will take the time to participate in the festival and explore more of the grid, enjoying the creativity of the many brilliant and artistic minds (and some very odd ones too) that are the bricks and mortar of the community.

There will be a cup of hot cocoa, some ice skates and an icy snowball waiting for anyone who visits me. Sorry, I just can’t resist the thought of a snowball fight having never had one in rl!

  21. Stephe Erhler says:

    Thanks for the winter festival!

Maybe I’m alone here but while I do at times get frustrated with SL acting weird and things like the spamming of the event calender not being enforced, it’s still amazing what all I can do in this world so I’ve learned to live with the constant “beta” feel SL has. I remember back to a year ago when the grid would be brought to it’s knees when over 20K people logged on and can see that yes, things are improving.

All that said, lets hope the SL holiday season is nice and lets all have some fun! WOOT!!!

    Stephe Ehrler

  22. Bobo Decosta says:

    Yeah winter festival!

But where are the key metrics of the past months?

No blogpost on the fact one of the big bosses was asked to step down?

    Communicate with us please!

  23. mac says:

so if i was living in australia (which i don`t) would it still be a winter festival.. think not as it`s summer , so how can that be right for all, in a word it`s not and in another word CHRISTMAS. yes christmas hahahaha christmas, happy christmas, big fat man bringing pressies oooh father christmas ok ok you don`t have to believe in that, but winter festival whats that .. starts after autumn till spring, if so i`v been missing something .. happy christmas, xmas, crimbo 2007

  24. Delilah says:

this blog is so darn entertaining…..
does anyone realize that this is a game… persay …… as opposed to real life? all computer programs, software, applications, scripting…… they all have their glitches…. with billions of users using different combinations of all the different technical toys in billions of different ways for billions of different reasons, how could there not be glitches? I love this game and I get downtime just like anyone else…… so downtime is rl work time or rl sleep time and maybe even rl vacuuming time…….
I give a thumbs up to the Lindens….. for their hard work, for their dedication, and for their efforts in doing their very best to try and ensure that everyone who uses SL gets as much enjoyment out of the ‘game’ as they possibly can…
Happy Holiday Season to the Lindens…..
and to everyone else too……. tis the time to be merry
I look forward to the winter festivities..

  25. kayla says:

Day late and a dollar short I see. My Christmas Gift Hunt started last week!! Your bot was seen in the sim this morning and now we have the Find Winterfest Linden inworld. He he! Too funny .. .

  26. Taff Nouvelle says:

I am going to run off to another virtual world, ( when there is one) It will be so much better than this one ( If someone ever designs one) It will not have any of the problems SL does ( Hmmmm, is that so )
I t must be really easy to build a virtual world where I can make a living, do anything I want to with scripts, make anything I want to with the tools provided, I mean there are so many other worlds like SL out there, well arent there??
And, of course SL is old fashioned, its been running for 6 years or more, so the new ones will have so much more to do, cant really think what that might be, but they will be so much better, a bit like the grass over there, it looks so much greener than here .
I want a world where every thing runs perfectly all the time, where i can stop people messing with my things, no grief, no stealing of my property, just like real life, umm, hold on, that IS like real life.

Please can someone tell me where I can find a perfect world where nothing ever goes wrong, please??

  27. Not the regular Santa Claus says:

    “its christmas everywhere”

SL is pretty much international, and no, it’s not “christmas everywhere”. Where I live there is no christmas. But I will still participate in the SL festival whatever you call it.

“Less “selfism” , “nationalism” and “religious fundamentalism” ”

It’s selfish and fundamentalist to think that all the world is the same like in your own country. Maybe you travel a bit, that helps a lot.

  28. Puppet Shepherd says:

I was wandering around some water sims just now and found a brand new build in the middle of Eldridge that doesn’t show on the map yet, with a bunch of stuff for the Linden vs. Residents snowball fight for Winter Fest 2007.

I was all upset that the Lindens were gonna let us lob snowballs at them and no one told me about it! But now I see the blog entry and all is right in my doggie world.

If y’all are frustrated with the Lindens, keep your eye on this one! 🙂

  29. coventina dalgleish says:

Yes by all means lets have a party to celebrate just how well the game works. You stayed true to your reputation giving us another disaster for a patch.

We normally sell from 20k to 25k per day in our retail locations. You have set a new record my partner sold 0L I sold 300L. Here is a hint I do not make money here you do not make money from me simple as that. I supported this game from my pocket for 2 years and with the current state of affairs I shall not return to my pocket. You have, it seems, sealed your fate and I am sure many others have the same emotions.

If you can not test these things before you launch them why bother this game is far from the conceptual stages, in fact from what I have observed has crossed the summit of the bell curve. Your only chance now is to create a stable platform to preserve your customer base.

I have lived through these supposed upgrades since the online totals were 1900. It had lag then but up until version 6.0 conditions improved. After the event of 6.0 all has been a strange mixture of new toys but poorer performance.

As far as inventory loss is concerned I never gave it much thought until I went to get a commonly used script only to find it missing. This makes me wonder what else your Incompetent programming has removed from my inventory.

All in All lindens ,especially you Phil, there is no excuse for this. The repeated failures all the same type. Yes you have a hard job heh well not as hard as most of us out here in the zoo.

Oh and if you left the blogs that are sensitive open you would not have subject jumping like this wasting others prime space.

shame on you for putting us through for so called fun

  30. Lao-Tzu says:

@ 29 Post your issue in the public issue tracker so developers can work on it. Complaining on a blog is simply a cynical, non-productive option in an attempt to put the spotlight on you. We do not care.

@ ALL :Winter Festival is the politically correct term these days for the celebration of God becoming man 2000 yrs ago to show the world how to live a love-filled life on earth. 🙂 Happy Bday JC!

  31. sakkaku says:

I wonder what our gift will be this year. Have we been nice and will get a somewhat working platform. Or have we been naughty and will be cursed with even more lag?

  32. Tegg B says:

Not the regular Santa Claus Says: “its christmas everywhere”

“Less “selfism” , “nationalism” and “religious fundamentalism” ”

Since when is Christmas a selfish religious nationalistic fundamental event?

  33. Pepper Haas says:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the Lindens and all sl players from everywhere — see you at the snowball fights!!

  34. Vivienne says:

Yeah, they deserve a merry christmas and some snowballs. Honor is theirs for their dedication and for keeping this great and yet unmatched thing running.

Anyway, dedication and hard work doesn not necessarily imply being on the right track in all cases. The not reasonable age (ID in fact) verification plans, the gambling ban, voice introduction – and spending a lot of ongoing attention on hardware eating shiny new features instead of old bugs were not very encouraging. Many open questions and no answers.

Nevertheless, overall SL is still unmatched. And most customers…err…residents still enjoy the game, in spite of all the flaws. In RL everybody complains on the weather, in SL everybody complains on the lag. As long as it doesn´t rain trojans…

  35. nomoresecrets says:
  36. Not the regular Santa Claus says:

You missed two quote characters. I didn’t say that, I quoted someone.

  37. Not the regular Santa Claus says:

“Winter Festival is the politically correct term these days for the celebration of God becoming man 2000 yrs ago”

No, the other way round. Winter solstice has probably been celebrated for 5000 years. It was later turned into various other religious occasions a few thousand years later. Symbols like evergreen trees have nothing to do with JC who was supposed to be born in place where these trees don’t even grow. (Trust me on that one, I live here.)

  38. Mel says:

    Teeple, I have a question.

If we register our activities and it goes into the hopper… what happens to it then?

Is Linden going to advertise it somehow? Or put the activiites on the sign in page? Or put it as a line while you wait to log in?

Of what value is registering with Linden?

I really am curious because we are setting up a winter building competion.

    Thanks,

  39. Tegg B says:

Not the regular Santa Claus Says: “Since when is Christmas a selfish religious nationalistic fundamental event?”

You missed two quote characters. I didn’t say that, I quoted someone.

Oops sorry, question stands then for the OP, because to me Christmas is BBQ outside, prawns, waterfights with nephews, I only ever seen snow once 1000km further south, but in SL it’s predominately winter as per the usual Northern Hemisphere theme, so I go with that, just don’t get upset when I wear shorts and singlet on the ice rink 🙂

  40. Ryu Darragh says:

Wow, I was going to post something about an event I want to see registered (I’ll just send the folder to Winterfest Linden and not burden anyone else with the details), but “inventory loss” is not a simple thing. Although I’m not working for Linden Labs, I do work on many of the same kinds of technology vis databases and “asset” sharing, and have a fair idea what’s going on. They just changed and increased their storage capacity and, if the evidence is right, are preparing to make major changes in how the Asset Servers are configured.

The only thing the Lindens *aren’t* doing in communicating what they are trying to do about the issue, which makes it look lke they’re doing nothing, is dumping all the nitty gritty details of all the tests and preps and key binding tables and on and on in preparation for whatever idea will work best.

Heh.. maybe they should prep a web page or 500 *with* all the details and you can go and read it and see.

Just look at it this way, SL is a creature evolving in less than one human lifetime and it’s bound to look like a squid one day, a gazelle the next and a warthog the day after. If you wait long enough and keep it alive, it may evolve into something you can enjoy and admire.

  41. Kara Spengler says:

@30 umm …. no. Christianity adopted the already-existing celebrations and customs of whatever area because the people there were celebrating them anyways. Ever wonder why all evidence (star positions, weather, etc) point to September? Even though your biggest celebration got moved to within a few days of the pagan celebration of the Solstice (aka Yule)? Or the fact that anotrher term for it is yuletide? We do not mind sharing the time period, but please do not claim it as yours and that you were there first. Laughable since various forms of paganism existed *long* before Christianity.

Various related traditions connected to christmass can also be tracked back. One biggie: santa has his original roots as Odin.

  42. Not the regular Santa Claus, but who cares?? says:

Hey maybe we stop that useless debate about political correctness, christianity and reglions and lets just celebrate everything, anything we like to? After all it’s not important to be right or to have the better religion – it’s important taht we are all together in secondlife!

  43. sirhc DeSantis says:

Hey I’m with 42 on that. december 25 is my birthday so celebrate moi lol. Merry SirhcMas 🙂

  44. Cocoanut Koala says:

OK, maybe they should rename the whole thing December Festival.

    It’s December everywhere!

    (Isn’t it?)

It gives me an idea for a display (Santa on a beach), but I don’t think there is an official central display area this time, is there?

    coco

  45. johnny says:

YEA LIKE ANYONE WILL GET TO SEE A EGG WITH THE STATE OF SL NOW YOU TURN ROUND YOU CRASH ONE THING YOU CAN COUNT ON …. YOU TAKING 346$ OFF ME A MONTH HOW ABOUT REFUNDING US FOR LOSS OF BUISNESS

  46. Tweed Fall says:

Everyday in SL is like christmas….somedays it’s a lump of coal, others it’s unmitigated joy. I know of no other place where I can see so much varied creativity and interact with so many people I would never and will never meet in RL, so I’ll keep coming back no matter the problems, like most people do.

PS….could one of you creative sorts invent a bowling ball for knocking down tin soldiers? 😉

  47. Uh Oh says:

And this has what to do with the winterfest?
“Anyway, dedication and hard work doesn not necessarily imply being on the right track in all cases. The not reasonable age (ID in fact) verification plans, the gambling ban,”
LL just needs to put it into effect so people will stop taking about it and get on with their second lives.
It is wonderful that Linden labs is taking some time to spend with their customers.
Happy Holidays to the world. Lets hope for a better year without war, without hate, without hunger, without want. A world filled with peace, love and happiness. 🙂

  48. Chantal Ingraham says:

Yahooooooo Winter downtime 🙂 Great work you Lindens 😉 Looks like Vista LOL

  49. Montana Corleone says:

I can’t believe you are doing this again, with your blinkered mind set. Half of the planet is in summer! Christianity makes up a small proportion of the world’s faiths. For the majority on the planet, if not in SL, it is not a holiday at all. December 25th is a normal working day like any other.

Sure. the majority are from the northern hemisphere, but there are substantial chunky numbers in South America, particularly Brazil, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and some in India, let alone our friends down in Antarctica, all of whom are enjoying summer right now, and not a snowflake to be seen – except maybe the latter, probably not sunbathing down there 🙂 Mind you, lots of places in the northern hemisphere don’t get snow in winter either. So what is it with the obsession to put snow everywhere, making it hard to orient and navigate on some sims?

One day, you might wake up and realise this is not a sandbox in California, but a global beastie…

  50. Hope Tesio says:

    Hi Teeple,

    Re: #38

Yes, I’m wondering, too! I registered our (fun, amazing, you don’t want to miss this!) venue. Now what happens?

  51. Wyald Woolley says:

Okay, okay, we tried to keep in on the QT but here it is: This whole event has nothing to do with Winter, or Christmas, or Pagan events. It’s solely to celebrate MY rez day… nothing else. It’s really all about ME.

So, I’m officially renaming the event: Wyald Woolley Day! If you see me in-world throw money at me! 🙂

  52. Stephe Erhler says:

#50 yeah how will we know if we are accepted or…. and if not why etc. Like if I never get a response, do I need to send in a different type (event rather than venue) or did my ticket just get lost? Opening day is tomorrow and still heard nothing back from them. How can they have a winter festival if they don’t respond to the tickets sent in? Or is the calender already filled with the big $$$ “popular places” types of venues?

Or are we supposed to send the folder to -winterfest linden- without getting a response from LL first? Since they got no LM in this ticket rerquest, how could they approve a site without seeing it? This all seems very confusing to me.

johnny Says: YEA LIKE ANYONE WILL GET TO SEE A EGG WITH THE STATE OF SL NOW YOU TURN ROUND YOU CRASH ONE THING YOU CAN COUNT ON …. YOU TAKING 346$ OFF ME A MONTH HOW ABOUT REFUNDING US FOR LOSS OF BUISNESS

If sim owners across SL want to decorate their sims Xmasy and wintery it’s their choice, or would you rather have everyone do it at random times of year perhaps? This is SL not Earth, and Xmas isn’t necessarily religious, I doubt many people are celebrating Xmas it for religous reasons at all.

  55. mac says:

hahaha off topic yes but hay ho, GREAT one LL since your fantastic 4 hr oops 7 hr update sl is total LAG central even on small residential plots that have normally been great.. turn move bang, sink or stroll a thousand meters off world great job and no it`s not my computer as this has been mentioned by many of my buds too BUT of course i would`nt want to be seen as moaning because hay after this long inworld i am used to a unstable lag filled platform with updates that always seen to effect performance.going back in topic look forward to the christmas festival makeing a fully automatic kick ass snowball gun just for you lot shame it`s only virtual though 😛

[9:52] WinterFest Linden declined your inventory offer.

Well, looks like my attempt to create something really different and fun falls flat and I dont even know why because no reason was given. I know I followed all the instructions to the letter, and gee.. I’d sure never seen any entertainment as different as the one I’d created. (it’s a snowball throw gallery where some avatars FlyDance on poseballs, while others toss snowballs at them, or try amid rotating cartoon characters.

    shrugs.

  58. Well, I’ve got my venue and events all set up, sent in the info yesterday and haven’t heard back yet. It’s the 14th today so according to their announcement the Winter Festival is already running. Anyone heard back from the organisers yet?

  59. Stephe Erhler says:

I think they screwed up and declined everyone’s folders, winterfest linden asked me to resubmit mine. So maybe everyone who got a decline offer should resubmit the folder again? This was a VERY confusing way of doing this!

  60. Prim Goddess says:

    @44 December festival sounds great

  61. Phoenixa Sol says:

Stephe Erhler? you rock!!!! Thank you sooooo very very much for letting us know that!! I looked at my ticket and it had been approved, so yes I did resubmit my folder! Happy Holidays and a little gift is on the way!

  62. Phoenixa Sol says:

Stephe, cant find you in the inworld search, so if you’ll send me an IM inworld, I can send you this goodie, ty again!

  63. Stephe Ehrler says:

One more heads up, the above instructions are also wrong in that each line can only be 30 characters, not 35 😦 I did mine at 35 and they don’t fit the HUD..

    Stephe Ehrler

  64. Bree Witherspoon says:

Will someone please tell me why they plan this HUGE winter fest and SL is DOWN!!!! I have been planning my event for weeks and now there are 40 minutes until the event which was accepted and approved by LL and it’s not gonna happen….I don’t understand why they keep rolling out new things BEFORE they fix THE ISSUES….HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL….

Author Acharya S says it so well:
Naturally, now is the time to reflect about the REAL reason for the
season, which, as we now know, has nothing to do with a man of a
particular ethnicity some 2,000 years ago.
