Second Life scheduled maintenance – Complete!

Second Life is currently closed for scheduled maintenance, 7am-9am PDT (14:00-16:00 GMT) We’re doing some database configuration work and other quick operations we need to perform while the grid is empty.

This is NOT a server software update, and NO new viewer download is required.

I’ll try to post updates as things progress, but I’ll be busy with some of the work myself. We’ll try to open up again as quickly as possible.

[Update: 8:00am PDT] – We’re done with the bulk of the work, which addresses these issues:

We’re doing final verification now. At the same time, a little more work is being done on other parts of the service. I expect we’ll be opening up ahead of schedule.

[Update: 8:45am PDT] – We’re open! Thank you for your patience.

  1. Lol-it-a(ngie) says:

I hope your operations on the Data base won’t corrupt our inventories? ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s a nightmare when it happens! Do a good job Lindens ^-^

  2. Jazzine Jewell says:

Does this maintenance include telling us why we had to change passwords, and why LL won’t acknowledge support tickets? hmmm

  3. Alias Schilling says:

Thanks for the initial info, Joshua – does help to know at the beginning! GL to all at Linden Labs for a smooth ride!

  4. Danica Vieria says:

Hope you will have a smooth maitenance.. I was surprised about the short time the grid will be down. Hope there will be no problems!
    Good luck Lindens!

  5. Candy Herouin says:

Is anyone else having the same problem I am its telling me to reset my password but it wont

  6. Solari Ra says:

way back in 2005 I used to love being able to fly all over SL but then home security systems became popular and now you can hardly move 30m before hitting an invisible wall..Would it be possible for the Linden scientists to create a sky highway? Maybe at 100M to 150M. Then people could travel freely..I cant even move around my own sim to look at other properties for sale..Thanks Solari

  7. Paramio_Sparrow says:

Ok, haber si lo arreglais pronto que me estaba forrando xD

  8. Rolando says:

Hopefully will not crash after re-opening…

  9. Candy Herouin says:

but Im allowed in the Beta version with my old password so if anyone could help it would be great

  10. Why is the Grid still showing the “Online” sign when actually the grid is closed for maintenance. And this time the warning of closing the grid could be more significant, it totally got overshadowed by Sculpties and other issues. But after all I think you do a great job Lindens, not easy to handle such a fast growing society. Good luck

  11. Just so you know, 7-9 am PDT is actually 3-5 pm GMT. Our clocks go forward too and we are still 8 hours ahead of you!

  12. Rick Brock says:

#4 I had the same problem for some odd reason, and i use a 14 letter number combo password. Have used same one for over a year on sl on all 3 of my accts only 1 got locked out. I had to click the forgot password thing do the security question, got the email for password reset that worked so maybe try doing that.

As for this password reset BS let one of my other accts get locked out and that will be straw that broke camels back. Seems paying customers donot matter in anyway anymore just the free customers. Who do absalutely nothing for the community except lag us paying people to death. i have already let one of my accts goto -usd since LL so stupid not to recognise the same CC i have used for a year and never changed i will never change it they fix it or dont get paid.

  13. Smiley Barry says:

Good luck Lindens! *runs to Linden Lab’s offices and puts lucky charms on servers and employees* ^.^

  14. Dekka Raymaker says:

    @ 4 Candy Herouin

With all the recent posts about this issue, one would assume that this maintenance time will correct password problems, we’ll see in two hours time, or maybe threeโ€ฆ

    โ€ฆor maybeโ€ฆ

  15. Allora Storaro says:

Still having issues trying to change my password Can anyone help

  16. Smiley Barry says:

    Reply to Rick Brock:

    O.O 14 alphanumeric??? WOW.

  17. Candy Herouin says:

ya but it wont let me do the security question thing

  18. Rick Brock says:

@ 11 was typo top part of my post was @4 just a typo lol

  19. Swann Muni says:

I have the same problem i have been told to reset my password to and it’s not working can anyone please tell me what to do

  20. Candy Herouin says:

and yes hopefully the maintince will clear this up

  21. nubee says:

Are you fixing the password issue?

  22. Sieben Ochs says:

    Hopes everything runs smoothly =).

  23. Jayden B says:

When are you moving to the main grid Smiley, too many grumpy people. -.^

  24. Candy Herouin says:

Iv tryed like all day yester day wouldnt work

  25. Aston says:

Good luck Lindens! and Good luck everyone of us.
let us log in and found our inventry is still there….

  26. Desereck Creeggan says:

Good luck Lindens, and thanks for the header Joshua.
I really hope this doesnt bring along another grid crash or major lag but eh,
Do your best- and try not to kill the grid in the process….

    Good luck!,

  27. Alias Schilling says:

Just in case you’re all looking for something to do to break those grid down Whinersday blues (or just fill the couple of hours?!?), why not come say hello at the – totally UNofficial – Whinersday club? Find us at

  28. Hypatia Callisto says:

still no mention about the lack of payment of stipends glitch, so I think I’ll mention it ๐Ÿ˜€

  29. calliope simon says:

Ever even briefly consider moving to a more robust database? There seems to be a meme deeply rooted within Linden Labs that maintenance and upgrades simply must require downtime.

Out here in the rest of the world, we’ve been doing very heavy maintenance on enormous and complicated database applications, even with tens of thousands of simultaneous connections, with no downtime at all. And I know that robust database software is expensive.

But you have the money. Just pay for it will you please?

  30. taffy ronmark says:

had the same problem i had to phone the help line to reset password

  31. wonderfull, all of 3 and a half minuts notice that the grid is gona be down for maintenance…brilliant

  32. Azadine Umarov says:

    re: @ 6 Hamish Stuart

FWIW, if there’s anything ominous, it’s that the planned update to the viewer was canceled to conduct additional testing, and be rolled out in another week.

Still, I would much rather an update get postponed than have LL issue an update that only adds more problems. Glad they caught the problems before jumping in and issuing the update. Especially with all the reports of password problems.

    It can’t be easy.

  33. looks like theres a few people here….migth as well be a live chat applet here

  34. Seal Wuyts says:

Why does it always have to be during the day when i want to go on, Im in England so its really annoying next time do it earlier or later.

  35. Cat Whitman says:

Does this mean that my stipend–due yesterday!–will finally be credited? Has anyone else got their’s yet? What’s going on with this?

  36. Bud Goode says:

Will this resolve that new issue where my “muted” list gets reset every time I log in? (hint, hint)

  37. Leska Noel says:

How do you know that you are a Second Life Addict?

  38. Neuro Nagorski says:

@7 Julie: GMT doesn’t change, in the UK we just shift to BST – PST is GMT-0800, but PDT is GMT-0700, just as BST is GMT+0100, so 7am PDT = 2pm GMT is right! ๐Ÿ™‚

  39. Convey says:

NO!!!!! DONT OFFER TO TAKE THE WHINERS AWAY TO ANOTHER SITE!!!! This is our entertainment while the grid is down!!!!!

  40. When I try to reset my password I cant get to the page to reset it. It says that there is an error and sometimes it says cant find page…Please help me..

  41. ai hope its go good!

  42. Sieben Ochs says:

This is just a note … and this really does need a comment. Those who complain whether the service is free or not, and whether or not they are paying or not, is inconsequential given the dynamic of people involved. And if one must also address this, then so be it … it is those very same “free” accounts who actually and without any doubt make up a good portion of the funding that is provided in world. This is the very reason why sims try to appeal to them with money trees, camping chairs, because they understand this. Its not a “hey lets give stuff away”. They figure the more people they draw in the more others will come. And primarily its those “free” accounts that do this. On my sim this is very much the case. Without the large draw on “free” accounts into my sim it would not have gotten as much attention. Additionally it does get annoying when others complain, or start drama … we all are intelligent(i hope). And can form and rationalize behaviors that are more appropriate. Be glad there is an SL to begin with. And if it displeases you from A-Z reasons. Then maybe it is best you find some other activity in which to engage on. SL is very massive. The team of SL can only do so much … and none of them are gods in their own right. In the end they are still human, and humans make errors, mess things up, and so forth. If such errors bother you file a bug report and wait. It helps nothing and no one to continually complain about an issue they are aware of. And also understand its not being ignored. Points to above that LL employees are not god. Even fixes they do may mess things up. This is true in all things wether SL or outside it. If the sun shines in your eyes brightly in the morning, do you write hate mail to God for waking you up continuously?

  43. Tino Hultcrantz says:

    Boo Hoo, Sniff Sniff

    Two hours…..
    Too long!

  44. rush gastel says:

O Dear yoyr only down for 2 hours come on linden surely you could make us suffer as usual by keeping the system down for 6 hours.
best of luck with whatever you are doing and thanks for a great what ever it is

  45. william Fish says:

since LL wont post it i’ll post it.. cause im sure there’s still people out there like me that can’t even get to the “reset password” page as it redircts you to a support page that stats “we are sorry we can not proccess your request” and the phone number is so busy waiting 30 mins for a voice recording to state “no reps available” and hangs up on you.. so here’s what REALLY happened to the passwords…… and no it wasnt as stated on the login page when you first discovered your password was bad

“Robin Linden: some passwords were reset because of a glitch in the support system”

  46. geob benica says:

everytime i go on the site my pc crashes into safe mode and freezes it aint much fun why is this?

  47. Deandra Watts says:

    Good luck with the update.

If a Linden would please post answers to those who’ve resorted to blog comments on the following, it would be a good step in improving communication (which it would seem the majority of residents view as lacking):

    1. Password reset issues – What is the correct and up-to-date method of resetting for those who have problems.

    2. Late stipends – Why are some late and not others, and are they forthcoming?

I, myself, am not having any of the above issues, but I sympathize with those who are.

Responses of an official nature (even “We are looking into it, you can expect an update on this issue shortly after the grid maintenance” I’m sure would be a welcome notice).

    Hope things go smoothly today.

  48. Claudius Foden says:

Hi, Lindens! Congratulations on the great job you’ve been doing’ However, there is one thing that really gets to my nerves here…why is it that every time I throw a party I cannot manage to send IM’s through groups? It is one of the best ways to tell people something is going on when they’re online…you know…all group members and stuff…but it rarely works…why is that so, mates?

  49. Jasmine Lumet says:

GL lindens- dont mess up the grid, lol, and hopefully this wont destroy the use of our inventory’s, the lagging of the grid, the causing of sign in problems, ect, ect, ect, maybe i should just shut up now, but at least i relize that tryin to run this huge project we call Second Life is hard! well GL

  50. i have never goten thouigh on the linden hotline….ever…theres never eny reps available day or night. i had to get live support…”WHEN THIS FEATURE WAS AVAILABLE!!!! HINT HINT!!!” that was th eonly way i coulf fix my password and now its looks like its hapening to other people but live suport is nonger available i world…..”george just unlucky i guess” whoever cant login cause password issues….good luck contacting a linden its near impossible 30 min wait on the phone then ya hung up on…its a real good service THUMBS UP!.

  51. Duncan says:

Best of luck LL. Thank You for holding off the new viewer untill it is proven.
Please let us know what is happening with passwords and stipend. Silence here is making us very nervous.

As i am a paying menber(195usd tier) i woudl like to log in and provide my customers the level of service I like to provide……hopes you understand, but doubts it.

Please comunicate problems with your customers. Dont try to distract us with shiny things. i find that very insulting.

Thanks to all the members here for helping each other. As, sadly we have to be our own customer suport.

    /me looks worried

  52. David Hultcrantz says:

Just thought I’d let you know, why did you risk our inventories from being cleared and make us put up with lag for the next 2 days. If there was anything wrong, please tell us because I saw nothing wrong

  53. taffy ronmark says:

well maybe i was lucky took me all of two minutes to sort out when i phoned last night 10pm gmt

  54. Oldsarge Dowd says:

@7 GMT == UTC is not British local time. All time zones are stated as an offset from UTC
@22 There was a Notice posted last week, and an update earlier this week.

I am concerned about creeping features with many still outstanding serious bugs. Having said that I’ve found that Sl is more stable in the past 3 weeks that it’s been since 1/2007, so clearly progress is being made. The grid seems to be working fairly well even with 40K+ people logged on. I do wish however that the Lindens would concern themselves more with the paying customers, and lavish less resources on the freeloaders.

  55. CommanderCody WAlcher says:

    Candy Herouin,
after you send the thing for forgot password there is a page that comes up that says

your instruction on how to change your password …………………………. look at the end of the thing and there should be somthign that says somthing like E-mail changed click here

click on it and it shoujld take you to were you can reset your password

  56. Please, please, PLEASE fix the Friends list with this maintenance! I’m sick of IMing everyone when I log on just to make sure they’re really offline!

  57. broads Lindbergh says:

14.00 to 16.00 GMT but uk is on british summer time which is 15.00-17.00 ok

  58. Neesha Jewell says:

I totally sgree with Deandra (29)….I am not having pass words or stipend issues, but the silence from Linden Labs is deafening and they need to address them quickly, or I will stop recommending Second Life to my friends.

  59. Meghan Dench says:

well this is great!!! i had things to do on sl and we wernt told before hand but i gues it cant be helped so i hope it goes well but i think linden needs to sort it out as sl is always having problems and they say they are going to introduce age verification, well thats going to be a cock up too if you ask me!!!

  60. Mace Roelofs says:

To react on the password issues, think about non us people for once. We have to pay allot of money to call to the US. If a glitch or whatever screws up the password of users, you might wanna open up a chat function or a online support in world to help out.

We’re not the ones asking for these problems and not causing it either.

Missed change if you ask me, hope that support is gonna help me out without a phone, which i simply can’t afford.

  61. “our office hours are from 9am to 5pm, if you cant log on…take a pill and have a lie down for several hours, our respresentatives will be with you shortly”

  62. Gavin MacKay says:

Say What!????? 7:47am and the grid showing ONLINE!!!

  63. King Goldenberg says:

I know I did not get my 500 L this week for what ever reason?

  64. Conveyician says:

NO!!!!! DONT OFFER TO TAKE THE WHINERS AWAY TO ANOTHER SITE!!!! This is our entertainment while the grid is down!!!!!

  65. Arboc Rotaru says:

Hey Lindens! I can appreciate the need for downtime and know that you intend for it to provide a better experience for the residents. Being in IT, I realize that you can’t keep everyone happy even if it’s for their own good. You have my support! SL is a fantastic experience that you make available to us. Thanks.

  66. some crap about not payin enough attention

  67. Scotty Cataract says:

#7 .. Julie.. LL is correct with their GMT time.. UK is currently on BST (GMT+1)

  68. rush gastel says:

shouldnt you close the comments as this seems the only way we can ever contact you at the lab, and i know thta you really don like us tell you our problem. never received back my lost inventory and given up every getting it. bug report was filed only reply was it was being looked into. today bought a rezzing vender 1500L$ down the toilet as it was never received. i know its a little matter to you but it isn’t to me

  69. Lucky says:

Hey! Yeah, I didn’t get my 500L either! What the business is? Ugh!

  70. Skippy Bosch says:

Grumble. Random aspersions about competance. Grudging acceptance.

  71. Sieben Ochs says:

@32 – its no cake walk hehe though i bet you they drink alot of coffee heh

@28 (add) – just a side note really. paid companies do the very same process of complaint, in relation to free softwares. However as in the above dynamic the same is true for free. Everyone would rather use a free product that enables the same capacity of features, as to that of the paid. This enables also businesses to earn more in the long run without these fees. Which is essentially what you see in world, alot of us either develop and open source our code or use it and modify it. So that it enables us to sell or make our sim experience a better one. Now if there wasnt this nce idea of open source and you had to pay for everything. Then the given concept would be you either would have to 1)buy one that does what you need 2)code it yourself. So really free is such a wonderful and giving thing. Whether its basing itself on free accounts to paid or to that of anything else. This is why hotmail does it, this is why yahoo does it, this is why most smart companies do it. Because enabling of free accounts actually does bring in money in different ways other than the sign up cost, etc. Maybe coders on SL that open source should start locking their code and just selling it, and the concept of modding and using a product for your needs would be gone as well. In this i will just close in saying … cant we all just get along without being at each others throats or even at SL’s. Be glad its here. Be glad things are free. Just be glad *offers tons of cookies to complainers* Now go sit in the corner and drink your milk =)

  72. is it possibile to count visitors to my structure in SL?

  73. Hmmm… the main grid’s down for maintenance. Guess I’ll do my bit to exercise the beta SL client… no, wait, I can’t, because two days after we were assured it would be available for download, the Linux beta client still isn’t available.

  74. william Fish says:

    read my post #28.

  75. eternity says:

Hey down time on thirsdays lets me catch up on work, but don’t leaveus down too long i get withdrawels good luck Lindens

  76. eternity says:

ok not thursdays wednesday lmao yea i am awake

  77. Raychel Fonda says:

Hmmmm…..well, I guess I’ll play this new game called RL for a bit…although it’s not near as much fun.

  78. william Fish says:

BIG LAUGH… please if it was only that simple to reset a pw…. i sent in a trouble call yesterday (support ticket) and this is my responce… header says internally closed…

  79. william Fish says:

oh and sorry for the double post i should of posted this on the last page…. this really got me laughing…..

To update or check the status of this Ticket:
    – Go to:
    – Log in, and you will be automatically taken to the Ticket page.

Hmmm now if i could only LOG IN i’d be fine!

  80. Pickee Beaumont says:

Ya know, I do feel sorry for those that have experienced problems, but look at it this way. You would have never experienced those problems had someone not decided to start the whole SL thing? Give the guys a break, let them fix whatever is wrong, and enjoy it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  81. Thanks. At least I have time to update my blog on Second Life.

  82. CommanderCody WAlcher says:

    William fish read my #34

  83. Sieben Ochs says:

@47 – Things happens sometimes very undesired ones. However do the best you can to report the issue. It is all i can say. its the same i tell all my customers of my software outside of SL. when something like this happens really its hard to track, because on your side you may be telling the truth etc, but on the other a company has to verify that you are telling the truth. So supplying data to this proof is essential in recovery. And anytime i’ve lost money, and I have in SL before I have received it back. One happened about a few weeks ago at when i went to withdraw 7,000L, it just went *poof*. However, keeping rational and call is key. The money took time to be returned, but it was.

  84. Sieben Ochs says:

@50 – *calm not call *lol* ok even in the morning some people can’t type

  85. CommanderCody WAlcher says:

also if you are having password problems read my #34

  86. Zodric Balczo says:

I was wounding if SL has ever considered a “SL-lite” that would allow people with out the full requirements, system wise, to get a taste of SL. I know from my own experience in HTML chat, that there are thousands of people out there that would steep-up once they got a bit of a feel for SL.

This experience is so different that when trying to explain it, it frankly sounds to good to be true.

    Just a thought

  87. Cat Lassally says:

Candy! If you’re still having password trouble it’s cos the lindens advice is hopelessly misleading. You won’t find the security question on the change password page (which their message implies), but have to go to the support system, hon:
There you’ll find a link for those who have forgotten their passwords (or had it corrupted by the lindens) and if you follow it, hon, you’ll be back online toot sweet. Good luck!

  88. Yes, it is should be time for maintenance. I had several problems like logging in with missing clothes and hair! My friends have similar problems. Thanks Second Life for all the fun you provide and much dreams and entertainment to us.

  89. David Igra says:

That’s right, make a note of that GMT is not the same as UK time ๐Ÿ˜€ GMT doesn’t apply summer time.

  90. Janitor Barborosa says:

Hey Lindidiots, your times are all out. It should be 15.00-17.00 GMT. Sort it!

  91. Marie Daniels says:

Hey Lindens, Love ya, but could you please fix the problem with Group IM’s. It’s so annoying to be closing the window over and over and over. And is anyone else suffering horrible lag since this last update?

  92. Binx Allen says:

lol hmm I see so many people complaining about the warning of the GRID down time.. if you’ll notice your screen at login it’s said for about three days or more that this would be taking place today, so there was a fair warning :)) I hope this doesn’t cause another big Lag fest too hehe :)) Take Care SLians!

  93. Hypatia Callisto says:

wow william, you got a response to your ticket… I didnt :/

if the stipend goes along with the less than adequate support, why am I paying for a premium account?

  94. Kestrel Writer says:

Just wanted to say thank you for working so hard to provide so much for so many.

  95. Adam Spark says:

#22: It was posted a week ago that the grid would be down today for a viewer update, and was posted yesterday that that was changed to maintenance.

  96. Seal Wuyts says:

    Come on, im so bored

  97. JJ says:

To Julie Apocalypse: I am a very pedantic person and would like to point out that GMT does not change with daylight saving time. Summer time in the UK is therefore not GMT but BST (British Summer Time) which is GMT+1. So when the Lindens say 14:00-16:00 GMT they are correct – you just have to do the maths and realise that means 15:00-17:00 BST.

  98. Kidder Zabelin says:

Im Sorry To Say This People But Kinda Take A break From Second Life Go To The Mall, Help Your Kid’s, Go To The Gym Second Life Is Just A Game A Real Fun Game But Maybe Exercise For The Updates To Be Ready Don’t Spen The Rest Of Your Life On This Game.

  99. ๐Ÿ™‚ it’s alomost done i guess

  100. Shannon Marellan says:

So why do you all have to be so mean to LL for? They’re down for scheduled maintenance, you know when the scheduled maintenance is, they’re ahead of schedule today and all you can do is grief them. The people who are doing the scheduled maintenance are not the same people who you need to talk to about a lost rezzing vendor, or about password resets, or about some enhancement that’s wanted.

You want to complain about the particular times they picked to do the scheduled maintenance? Good complaint. You want to complain that its too often, or takes too long, or that they don’t apparently have a high quality test and backout system for the updates (because usually they break something else and it takes hours longer than advertized to get running)? Great! But if its not related to scheduled maintenance, take it somewhere else because bottom line:
    —–> They’re not listening!

  101. Menace Tammas says:

We have now 17.15 GMT , when can i loggin

  102. Zimmy Ginsberg says:

There were no five minute warnings this time. Would have been nice, so I could take off my attachments. Anything Im was wearing before 1.15 were borked when I got back on the grid after your inv loss “fixes” then. Please make sure everything is backed up and no data lost if you’re messing with databases.

I know your Director of Operations doesn’t think dbs are all that important, but the rest of the planet does…

@ 7 Julie Apocalypse – no GMT never changes, it stays the same. What you are now on is British Summer Time, which is one hour ahead of GMT currently. ๐Ÿ™‚

  103. alyona su says:

very good… hope you do a rolling restart in the process to clear out some wild scripts that got broken in a bug introduced in the last viewer ๐Ÿ™‚

OH! And you completely changes the Island transfer requesting process. Okay – figured out how to make the island transfer request in the new support web site. BUT – it’s still sitting on ‘New’ status.

How long before you (LL) acknowledge that the request has been made and then I know it is in queue???

Thanks LL – keep up the effort.

  104. Renton Eretz says:

@34 If you bring up your friends’ profiles, you should get a more accurate result on their online status.

  105. Sieben Ochs says:

@52 if you don’t own land there is no reason to have a premium account. If you do then its understood. Now if you can easily sell such land, and revert to free. Then do so. Enjoy yourself =). P.S. on side note I am one programmer and i get thousands of emails … even my automation system can only do so much. Now take this into consideration on how many lindens there are to handle responses to that of actual users. And you will also understand that any request, issue, and so forth can and will take time. Sometimes very long, sometimes short. However, im sure they try to reply as fast as they can, as I do with my users. And yes my products are either open source or paid. The very same comment you made can be directed toward users of my paid products. However, you can also understand that not everything gets responded to in the timely manner the requester wishes. And if it doesnt get responded to within a long time frame … say 1-2 weeks (give or take on the given staff that can reply). Then be a little more assertive .. etc.

Hey LL, could you please just sell to a company that cares about customer service? It’s pretty clear that you’re going for acquisition by your refusal to pay for new hardware or the high salary for qualified engineers, but come on already. Even Microsoft would be fine at this point; they couldn’t make the viewer or server software any worse, and at least they answer the phone.

    Lindens, you’re doin’ fine.

  109. alexia cournoyer says:

the average turnaround time for high priority problems seems to be 14 days. and the software seems to be fantastically buggy so by the time someone finally reads it, it probably won’t have any details anyway..

evil person that i am suggests you just keep raising a new ticket each day. The service is so rubbish that blowing their stats out is not really here nor there now -but it is an interesting way to remind them of their obligations to their paying customers.. just log a new ticket and refer to the old ones.. may also give the help desk a bit more ammunition to help justify more resources/people who can read or whatever the problem is that makes them unable to respond as they should.

after all, in the real business world, the service level agreement for resolution of a paying customer not being able to access their account would be somewhere between 4 – 24hrs – not 14 days before they think about getting around to it and emailing you to ask what the trouble is.

I would love nothing more then to take the “password glitch” else where.. problem is… WHERE? and dont tell me to log in to use the forums. THE REAL PROBLEM #50 is that (and one day it will happen to you) random acts of “glitchs” that paralize your enjoyment of SL and all that you as a paid member (or me in this case) have invested in. I run a mall… it needs my daily attention… i’ve had to tell my merchants to wait, tell my guest to wait.. tell my customers to wait… why? because LL wont address this problem and… well… give us a place to “complain” about it as you so tactfully wrote.

As several other people have noted, I have not yet received my stipend as of this writing. This is especially puzzling, as my other premium accounts (yes I am one of these ridiculously honest people who pay for their alts) have received their stipends. I have not had any problems with my passwords (knock on wood), however I have another, possibly related cause for concern.

Lately I have been orbited several times in-world, and when I check Bumps, Pushes, & Hits, it tells me I have been hit with a scripted object by *Governor Linden*

    Two choices:

    1. Governor Linden is now griefing his own residents.
    2. Some sicko has hacked SL and taken control of Governor Linden’s account to grief people.

Option 2 may have some bearing on the fact that LL has been remarkably silent on the password issue. If God has been possessed by the devil, what do you expect the angels to do?

Am I the only one who finds this slightly scary?

@ 60 hmmms thinks for moment … you do realize hun that very few businesses can actually resolve a technical issue in 4 hrs, especially while trying to maintain their current work load. and really anything under 10 hrs can be said of the same. Ive had issues with AT&T, Cable Co., Computer Companies, and etc and most have taken full days to reply and fix to the proper level. If they are slower than yes itll be handled sooner, but really is SL slower? As you can see it is not, and they do have alot they do. So with the given staff and work load, id say 12 hrs + is normal … sooner is great but not expected. My issues from SL have all been handled in a day or more timeframes. And i dont fret as i know they will be. more important things to life than money or worrying over a log in. I could cite issues where ive lost inventory items over 15,000L but i dont worry. Because of this and this is my opinion … i spend only the money in world i feel its ok to lose. and in a sense if you spend 30,000L for a castle. Can you really take it into RL? Nope. So in a sense you do lose money. So just take inability to log in for a day a given acceptance to a break from SL. Go write, draw, play your games =) and come back later when its fixed. Now if it takes a very long time just do again. Til its fixed =)

  129. kath McGill says:

Ok. It used to be when you had a problem some where you could contact a real live person and if it was really important a linden would come where you are and fix it. Been there, seen it happen. Even when you get a live chat with a linden it helps. Now you have to search through the pages to the contact us, and then you get an automated email generated and it takes days for them to get back to you, if they do, and you can’t respond to them via email if the problem persists.

There are some very real scary issues out there that the lindens know about that can affect an entire sim, and response time to these issues shouldnt have to wait until someone decides to get around to it.
New and improved is good, but, fixing what you had is better. IMHO the best version was number 15, Weve moved on to 16 and soon 17 ,and some of the same problems are re occuring. If you have to start from scratch, please do so.
or find a version that worked somewhat well, and stick with it please.
    thank you.

  130. Val Gastel says:

Jup im sure… its a GAME! … yes bugs are annoying, yes support aint what it should be, yes its been the same stuff for a few months now …
You’d say people get used to that stuff.

Most of the time SL runs, you can do what u want and every now and then u lose something, get griefed, crash etc.
People that are used to (free) online gaming on this scale know that servers die, logins fail, bugs arrise .. and what do they do?
wait till they can login again and play the game as they did before.

If there is a bug report it, everyone should. If 10.000 people report the same bug in a different ticket, they will pay attention to it, but its just quite hard, if not impossible, to make everyone happy.

Shit happens, its a game, if you dont like it, dont play it.
People shouldnt be so darned serieus about stuff, even if you pay monthly costs… you can always cancel it.

(Second)Life is a game, enjoy it!!!!!

@ 50 Shannon Marellan – >>So why do you all have to be so mean to LL for? Theyโ€™re down for scheduled maintenance, you know when the scheduled maintenance is, theyโ€™re ahead of schedule today and all you can do is grief them.

Well up until yesterday it was an update. Clearly, a delayed part only deployment, Voice is nowhere near ready for Prime Time. It’s also the only place left some people can access, for those who can’t access forums, or are suffering from the password fiasco Linden is strangely silent on. Generally means you can’t bug report inworld or via the JIRA or access the ticket system on the web if your password is borked…

    โ€”โ€“> Theyโ€™re not listening!

Yes they are. They still ignore it, cos they’re Linden and have some very strange ideas on how to run a business. We know they are listening, because after the complaints following the 13 hour downtime fiasco in December, the comments here wre cut from 500 to 100 because the complaints overshadowed their flag waving about 20k concurrency. And since then, they cut comments short if they don’t like them. So some one reads. And I bet potential investors do too…

@ 54 alexia cournoyer – well putting in a ticket each day is likely to make it worse, since there will be more tickets, affecting their system and response. And once they realise, they are liable to just ignore you for ever afterwards. They might want you off their back, but since you can’t actually contact them it’s even easier to ignore you. That was my view when I worked in customer service. The more they cpmplained, the more I made them wait. Every time they recomplained it wasted my time which could have been used to fix things…

I phoned Linden about the password thing too. In order to solve the problem, you’d better ask a friend who has the Concierge account. They have a better phone support and online chat system. 146. CommanderCody WAlcher says:

about 30 more minutes and SL will be back up ^_^

  147. Sieben Ochs says:

The complainers also make it “seem” so easy to fix things. If I was to show you my code or even code of SL and you are not a programmer … you will go cross eyes I’m sure. And yet they are gods … i forgot, and can wave wands and fix like that. Reverting to older softwares while in a current state would be buggier than the current state fyi lol. Not bake to easier or fixed. Because then they would have to revert to that said state. And how many of us log every detail of a process we do. So they could revert … true. Would it be the same reverted process as you knew … nope. Close to it … maybe … However to do so would take the grid offline for a longer time to ensure a stable rollback and that would mean more than just a few hrs, maybe even days. And given the level of users … i dont think a day or longer is a acceptable process to go towards. Hence why they have worked on the FirstLook viewer … in all truth they could also slowly work on the integration of another network that ties into actual grid. Unlike the other test grid that does not. Then apply the updates to this secondary grid while maintaining backwards compatability with the first. Like being able to open a Photoshop CS2 file is Photoshop 4. However to do another grid of this sort that ties in would take some time. Though it is a thought.

Sorry for the semi off-topic post, but I had password problems. Here is what I did: I used an alt (I think you can use the feature to simply use an E-mail address too.) to sign onto the support page and filed a ticket. I pointed out the automated password system did not work. After aprox 8 hours, I recieved a note to call a special phone #, which I did, and a very helpful Teeple Linden fixed me up.
If I lived outside the states, I’d mention that to get as non-866 phone #.

  157. Jay says:

Will you be purging the inventory of griefer tools, during this downtime? The sandboxes are always full of screaming cats, screaming “Ahh” heads, items which the ‘banana phone’ griefing groups have created, giant penises, particle spammers, scripted griefer cages which follow you and try to lock you up ….

Basically, if you sent one customer service Linden to sit in a sandbox for an hour, you’ll pick up an exhaustive list, of every griefing tool used in Second Life.

It would be a worthwhile exercise to “purge the scurge” from the database, so that Sandboxes can be used for their intended, and peaceful purpose … rather than for griefer playgrounds ๐Ÿ™‚

Good work LL, keep it up ๐Ÿ™‚

#55 William Fish – Where Do I Take My Password Problem?

William, if you own a mall, then you likely pay enough for your account to take it to concierge service. I don’t remember what the break point is, but check that out in case you can take advantage of that. I manage a private island and when something goes wrong, I get in touch with them. And they address the problem. SL is clearly a work in progress and things bork a lot. But they can usually fix it. Like before you had all 8 corners of an island restricted and there were only the 4 sides, somebody did the corners surrounding me with reservations. I wasn’t there for the 3 days and they got it. I called up concierge and I was moved out to another sim in an hour. Now they’re stuck with 4 reservations surrounding a gaping hole.

  166. Haplo Voss says:

Look, I am the first to be polite and give pople the benefit of the doubt, but I am working on a large rpoject for a client that is paying me a LOT of RL U.S. dollara! So in this instance, I must agree that this really does need to be resolved asap.

I would love to work for the lindens, even be a customer service rep and do all of my builds and work on the side – I’ve thought about it a lot, but I cannot stand by while my account is simply dead in the water and nobody will speak with me. None of the links provided will work, and nobody will talk to me. Very odd.

@84 If this is how they complain while its “active” i cant wait til LL puts the R.I.P on it. As all things do come to an end. God you will see mass complainer hysteria then. There is alot of more important things in life, than clinging to a single communicative process that, i guess some, aptly do call their 1st and 2nd life. Its good to be patient =), i am the very same way. Only thing i get upset on is when i am out of cookies. Heh. Though a quick trip to store fixes ^_^ *shares cookies with everyone* ^_^

  171. What about the PASSWORD Issue? Is someone going to bother to explain WHY hundreds, if not thousands, of your customers were suddenly FORCED to call SUPPORT to get their accounts new passwords so they could then change them back to whatever they were and get into the world?

Congratulations! really… doing something like this on a monster like this and finishing 15′ earlier than expected is exceptional!

  175. alexia cournoyer says:

@65 yes Zimmy – you’re absolutely right that it will make it worse – it will blow out their stats and cause those on the ground grief and yes, you’re absolutely right that their most likely response will be to behave in an unprofessional way as you pointed out you did when working in customer service..

*but* what it does is leave a very obvious trail that the people complaining are relogging tickets due to poor response times. in theory (and in a professional organisation) this would be escalated up to those who *do* have responsibility for ensuring the speedy response to paying customer issues.

The only other response i have is that if you were being paid as badly as i suspect you were for your job then it is quite understandable that you didn’t behave in a manner as you should – you weren’t paid to be professional, just answer the phones or whatever the contact mechanism was. However, LL supposedly pay their support people well enough (i.e. over minimum wage) that professional behaviour should be expected.

  176. Katiroth Paravane says:

Well, i had the same problem with reset password yesterday and i did reset it for 3 times. After i resetted i could login oncetime. As i am crashed and tried to relog….i couldnt lol. I need oncemore to reset my password. After the 3rd time i called the livechat support for it, because i got no response at my email guestaccount for the ticket i set up to support. They told me at live support, that it is a known issue and the technicians are working on it.

Now….today….i got an Email responding my ticket at guestaccount lol. Natria Linden tells me, that i have to contact the phoneline for it to verify my identification lol. They use my verified paypal account and they told, that people with that dont need another verification for it. And this answer by email is different to answer by lifesupport. Now i ll try to login and i hope for sure, that i will work now.

    Val Gastel:

If the problems like this password issue, inventory loss, required giving of my SSN for validataion and miserable reliabilty aren’t addressed soon, lots of us WILL be leaving SL. A great number of people have already left — you won’t find the Blue Note Jazz Club, TACO or Club Rapture anymore, for example. Everyone has a limit on how much mess they are willing to tolerate. If not for my friends and my group in SL, I’d have already cancelled and gone back to my old Muck. We have fun in spite of the problems. But it is getting very hard, very hard indeed, to hold onto hope that things will get better.

  183. InfraZion Nishi says:

Fine, the update is complete, a neighbor dropped by to tell me he canโ€™t rez items any more. I also tried, canโ€™t rez a thing. Creating objects still works but if it is taken into inventory you wonโ€™t be able to re-rez it.

  185. Zimmy Ginsberg says:

@ 79 Alexia – Actually I was paid pretty well. I was polite, and always did what I could. But some things eg shipments from the US were outside my control, and once I had asked, there was nothing more I could do but wait. So continuing to waste my time after explaining that, just meant his file got put on the bottom of my pile. It;s human nature that you don’t give the best service to those who piss you off ๐Ÿ˜‰

As for Linden, we know they are very unprofessional, so no hope there. They have new ideas on running a company. That means no management structure, staff can pick their own tasks, and they have no control over code implementations, which is why bugs don;t get fixed, and they forget to do things. That really is the root of the problem. Until that changes, we can’t expect much. Until then, the more that complain, and make it obvious that nothing is being addressed, the more investors will be put off, and ultimately they might just pause to consider if they should stop doing things the way they do, and do them like everybody else does. That would be professional.

A whole world created of user created content? Totally awesome, totally mind-blowing. But people STILL whine constantly.

And to all the INSANE people who act like they OWN LL because they pay 9.95 a month and DESERVE personal attention/explanations every time something goes wrong.. HAHAHHA must be why you’re sitting in SL all day, cause that’s not how it works in the real world.

We should be thanking the lindens for fixing stuff, they dont ignore it, they OBVIOUSLY prioritize it. and if software companies held back progress because of one stupid bug, we’d all be running windows 3.1 (or slack 3.0, or whatever they call it in apple world ha ha)

point is, the game glitches sometimes yeah, but overall its still HANDS DOWN the best game i have ever seen. I dunno about LL, but I sure hope all the whiners mean what they say about leaving ๐Ÿ™‚

  190. Chaz Longstaff says:

Hey, and on the topic of stipends, I trust that everyone here posting about them is declaring them on their income tax as income? Cause that’s what they are.

And for those endlessly complaining about things being wrong. You’re boring. Stop. You know, what, SL is bleeding edge. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

  191. Elbereth Witte says:

Yeah Chaz, I’ll see that the IRS is well informed of my yearly nine dollars and sixty-three cents worth of stipend. ๐Ÿ™‚

  192. Dytska Vieria says:

@81 – The Blue Note sold their parcels in January, I bought them. Then they bought their own sim. Since there were still about 50-100 people each day teleporting to where The Blue Note used to be, I made a sign that notified these visitors that The Blue Note had moved to a new sim. The new sim was open in less than a month. My sign was there for about 2 months. The Blue Note did not leave SL and I think most people know that, but there are still a few straglers.

  193. macs yue says:

Will this or the upcoming update help me retrieve my lost inventory items? I’ve lost over 4,000 items, many of which I paid good money for. Logging off and back, emptying cache, even removing the software and then re-downloading it didn’t help. And I found the generic email from LL to be a bit insulting after I sent in a bug report. I want my stuff back!!!

  194. jdtrue writer says:

    @ Chaz

I will be happy to report my stipend as soon as it is worth more then the cost of a premium membership to get it LOL

I had the password reset thing last night. Mine went right trough but it was convoluted to get to the steps. I expected it to be a set process but had to go through as if I forgot my password.

The security questions were โ€œuniqueโ€ for lack of a better term. First one was normal the second was not bad if I could have remembered there names (that is why I have a friends listโ€ฆ. Is it not). The 3rd question I donโ€™t even rememberโ€ฆ. The 4th I figure an one SL or even access to many blogs or SL fan sites could find outโ€ฆ.

Ohh and I got my Stipend just fine but LL if you want to give me another I will take it LOL

What changes were made to the system that required me to re-set my password? Why was there no announcement made about that? Was the system hacked again?

  197. Glauco Barbosa says:

  198. Alexander says:

I like the way they choose to shut down comments sometime….to me….that’s a very obvious admission of “oppppssss we screwed up…sooooo……let’s just announce this and not discuss it…..but thank you for your patience”

  199. Anonymous says:

    @ Chaz
It’s only income if you extract the L$, otherwise, it’s simply a token ๐Ÿ˜‰

  200. Alexander says:

    Hey Cool

My comment about posting being turned off when they don’t want to discuss things has been censored. And yet other off topic comments about password resets and missing stipends etc have not,……when did LL move to China?

So again I say, I like the way LL turns off comments on some announcements… admission that something has occurred that will get no love from even the most ardent supporter….but thank you for your patience.

Hmm. I would hate to follow that post. Wait! I am. Yikes and sigh.

Anyhow, thanks be to Lindens for fixing stuff. However, I still find the Group search to be Borked. If the key word is third in a name, the search engine doesn’t find it.

What when wrong now? Had to log off becouse of conection lost and now I cant log on anymore, tells me I should try later but now already 20 minutes.

  204. It would be great to have a draw distance option of 32m for close area meetings. It would free up some demand on the servers! (^_^)

Ok What’s with not being able to buy linden again? I have many friends who cannot seem to be able to buy linden again and YES they have money on their credit card and so do I.

One of them, my neighbor even got an answer in live chat that he should check with his bank… but he has unlimitted credit… wtf is this??? Sorry but we’re very angry.

At least to admit that there is a problem with SL would be nice. But it too often seems like SL has to reject problems to its members instead. Not even SUGGESTING but just go and telling us to check with our bank when we do have made it clear that we already checked???? GRRRRR

Check your stuff and admit when you are wrong at least and give us a time frame to say that you will solve the issue. Is it oo much asking

Finally Linden Lab is starting to fix things.=) And with minimum downtime. ^.^
