Love Challenges, Enjoy Chowdah, Hate the Yankees?

If so, check out the Boston Recruiting Party information page. Sure, Pathfinder has been out there forever and we have a power trio of MIT Media Lab grads, but with our recent Boston-area technology acquisition, the time has come to take Linden Lab east and open an office in Cambridge. Of course, our soft, Northern California lifestyle leaves us ill-prepared for brutal snowstorms, humidity, mosquitoes, and Boston drivers, so we need your help! If you are brilliant, passionate about your chosen field, and have skills that match up with our many needs, please visit the Party Page to submit your resume and receive an invitation. The recruiting event takes place on May 30th and I hope to see lots of great people there.

Linden Lab seeks to maintain a diverse and welcoming workplace; therefore candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Yes, even Yankees fans.

    Welcome to Boston/Cambridge!

    Viva MIT!

Best of luck, Lindens. You are recruiting on fertile ground.

  5. Destiny Niles says:

mm. I wonder if griefers will try to crash that party lol 🙂

  6. Threshin Barnett says:

Great 😀 Expanding will really help SL.
Speaking of which, what’s the Status on the Vendor script you broke with Friday’s rolling restarts?

  7. Wyald Woolley says:

    >>It is expected that we will not be able to address the issue until Monday and apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks to those who sent bug reports and used the Public Jira to bring this issue to our attention!

  8. Zimmy Ginsberg says:

Yeah, MIT is not bad, almost on a par with Imperial College, London. But really, with only 26% of users in the US, did this need to go on the blog?

And instead of partying, how about fixing the stuff you borked with 1.15, and the new stuff you borked on Friday?

  9. Nite Page says:

Considering, no matter the ‘percentage’ of U.S. users, which btw is only relevent in registered accounts numbers – actually online activity-wise the U.S. has the 2ne most active logons per registered account numbers.

Also considering that LL is located *IN* the U.S., and therefore is recruiting for new employees in the U.S., then yes Zimmy it did need to go in the blog.

    Have a nice day.

  10. Samm Submariner says:

“Following the acquisition of this technology, Linden Lab will integrate Windward Mark’s WindLight® into the Second Life Viewer and will open source the code under a General Public License agreement. The Viewer (available here) featuring WindLight® will be immediately available for PCs, with a Mac version to follow.”

Well, so much for listening to the Open Letter asking for LL to fix existing things such as providing a reliable inventory, teleport etc. before adding new features.

As far as I can tell adding new graphical eye candy is more important than fixing the basic and increasingly fragile underlying infrastructure?

I’d be more impressed if LL had acquired a company with experience in solid software design and development, transactional databases or 24/7 service provision!

And it sounds as if the poor Linux community miss out on this as well as voice?

  11. Uccello Poultry says:

Welcome to New England 🙂 Good people here with a mindset different from the West Coast.

  12. alpha says:

did u mention a while ago about opening an office in Brighton, UK? what happened to that?

is this a place to get answers to questions, or a place to say things?

is it two way or one?

  13. alexia cournoyer says:

the bottom line is that LL can no longer cope with the growth and are outsourcing as much as possible.

They’ve made a stab at fixing the things they see as important to the company, but have developed a willful blind spot to what is important to their consumers and why not? it’s not as if people stop coming inworld.

the fact that they don’t offer 24/7 support is a give away. ok, the fact they don’t offer 7 day let alone 24/7 support… plus the problems with the inworld infrastructure…

complain all you like, but only a loss of either revenue or customer access is going to sort this.. and lets face it, most people are not going to cancel their premium accounts nor are we going to stop logging on.. even the open letter project got so pitifully few signatures as to be easy to ignore.

Is it any wonder that LL is allowing its corporate distain for us to show? we just keep gritting our teeth and working around every problem.

  19. Zanthor Shiras says:

Can’t wait to see the good stuff you bring to the viewer with this technology acquisition.

(Just kidding about the yankee thing — my SO would kill me if he thought I was serious, him being from NY ‘n’ all.)

  21. Chris Gaits says:

Well I have to admit, that the Lindens and some users have a great sence of humor. Bravo to the expansion, I hope you guys will also go a bit more north and visit us here in Canada.

  30. IntLibber Brautigan says:

too bad LL didn’t learn enough from the locals before buying real estate: the rule is that New Hampshire is income tax and sales tax free, while Mass-hell is a socialist hell-hole. Perhaps its strategic though: with RL so miserable in the home of the left wing liberal tax and spender, LL staff in Boston will want to spend that much more time in the libertarian paradise of SL.

  31. Rena Kuu says:

I hope the Lindens know what they’re doing. They’re adding WindLight which is totally useless except for exhibitions to the media at large instead of trying to actually work on persistent problems such as the Group IM bug. I’ll just have to wait and see how this territory acquisition move plays out and what it means for the general public at large — those whose cries often go unheeded in favor of big business and rich investors. Hopefully this will mean more flexibility and range of motion for the Lindens — allowing them to both implement new features as well as fix old problems at the same time — but I can’t be too sure yet. The Lindens are Lindens after all — formerly genuine, quality people now corrupted by outside influence day by day.

  32. FYI, there’s a growing Second Life Boston Meetup group. I’ll be encouraging our new Boston area Lindens to attend, and I try to make every meeting myself. Hope to see you around! http://secondlife.meetup.com/10/

  33. Vickie Maidstone says:

Hmmmm, weather, how nice. But why isn’t nothing being done to fix what is broken??? You know, I spend a lot of my free time inworld as is, and on many occassions I have had many of the same ol’ problems like everyone else and quite frankly, I am about to give up and go to WOW and try it awhile, but being the sweet tiny sweetheart that I am, I’ll hang around just to see the fireworks yet and then pack up and leave without a whimper………..

  36. RebeccaLynn says:

Why do so many people assume that one thing negates another? The people who worked on acquiring the atmospher company are not the same people who work on fixing the bugs. The people who are recruitting office staff in Boston are not the same people who repair programming. Linden Labs is obviously doing both or we wouldn’t still be up and running. Anyone who feels that there should never be bugs in computer code and that programmers can just snap their fingers and fix anything – let me bow down and kiss your feet because you are obviously God and never make mistakes, over look anything, make a poor decision or do any of the myriad other things that the rest of us do. Computers are inherently complex and the more complex the coding becomes the more one is unable to predict or prepare for all outcomes – if you can’t live with that, then go find a cave somewhere because our entire world is becoming dependent on computers and we will have to learn to live with it. If you wait until every single possible combinations of conditions is tested (if you can figure them all out) it will probably be years before even a single change is implemented. Oh, by the way, this also goes for any action or reaction you could possibly have to any situation in your life, so get your heads out of the sand and look around at reality, look at how the company you work for behaves and does it’s job. If you want perfection, leave the planet because you ain’t gonna find it here…

Patience runs pretty thin when you see this form of reaction to the underlying issues. How easily some become ‘happy’ again with a twinkle of good news…
Great lets all go to a ball game…

As a business man, my only plausible thoughts on the picture that I see unfolding here, is one of fire fighting, I see no underlying solid foundation based on a Business Plan. Its quite transparent that such a Plan does not exist, or if it does, its very very short term.

Perhaps the injection of someone with backbone and solid business accumen couldn’t be recruited, when they see how ‘relaxed’ everything is.

Bit of advice to LL.. when there is a series of problems with the ship.. don’t tell the passengers the good news and the bad news from a life raft.
Good News: We have sent out for more Champagne .
Bad News: Well… the party ended to quickly and we all had to get back to work.

    @40
Somebody sent me a link to the Linden Lab work ethic page after a comment I had on how things are and should be.
    http://lindenlab.com/employment/tao
    Interesting read, no?

@llGiveInventoryList and Project Open Letter people
I’d like to see all the residents get together and fill the comments to every blog for the next week starting Sunday with a good 20 lines or so of something like: FIX THE CODE FIX THE CODE FIX THE CODE

Ignoring anything else they have to say about features might get some good attention. Who says we should stop at a week? Maybe carry on until something’s fixed.

Just a few thoughts. It’s a nifty feature, but it’s definately not on the priority list of what seems like the majority of residents here.

Again, thank you for auto-closing comments on interesting threads.
Again, thank you, that there are so many places where one can leave some feedback on specific things.
Thank you for giving me the feeling of beeing ignored again.

There were days, when everybody was able to comment on things.
There were days, where there were a lot of Linden comments on the blog as well.
There were days, where one had the feeling, that he can communicate with LL and is not just a number in the database.
Well, those days passed by, as it seems.

Everytime i look up blog comments and there are imho really important entries, i can’t see a LL reply on them anywhere, as there used to be. Leaves us with a feeling of “nobody’s gonna read this anyway”.
Everytime i want to add something to a blog entry, i can’t do so ’cause the comments are again f*ck*n closed?! That really annoys me more and more.
Sorry for beeing rude, but this really really sucks.

About those clouds from the blog entry above this one:

really awesome feature, but please don’t forget to put something in, to disable clouds, move them higher/lower or whatever. There are some huge buildings already that suffer from clouds inside the building and now is the right time to take care of that problem.
If you revamp the weather system anyway, PLEASE!!!! keep that in mind.

    Thank you,
    Abdiel Nimbus

  45. desdemona enfield says:

    Such hubris.

  46. RebeccaLynn says:

Instersting comment that you don’t see Linden comments much on the blog, i guess that depends on which blog you’re reading. This was basically just an announcement of some positive business development (and to the guy who thinks they don’t have a business plan, i’d like to see the consumer comments on the business of this size and complexity that you run). On the blog pages where LL are letting us know about a problem you see many Linden comments – why would they spend a lot of time commenting here? They’re busy working, if you have something that you need an immediate repsonse on contact the help desk. I’m surprise that with as many people on these blogs who claim to know something about computers or computer programming that the assumption seems to be made that if something is broken it can be immediately found and fixed. Ususally when something unexpected happens, it’s because it was imbedded in a sufficiently complicated piece of programming that can not be quickly unravelled without potentially causing more problems. And to all you nay sayers out there, if it was easy, we’d all be doing it. Yes, some businesses had some income loss – if you had a pipe break in the middle of your street and flood your building in RL chances are good you wouldn’t get it fixed for several days either – compare it to any real life situation and i think that LL does a pretty good job at making repairs in a timely manner. Why do people expect perfection and immediate service here when it doesn’t even begin to happen in the real world. I believe LL is substantially more repsonsive when it comes to repairing issues than most RL companies – ever have to wait a couple of weeks after your phone service goes out because someone ran into a junction box? It happens all the time, and we deal with it apparently far more calmly than people do here. Look at how you do your own job and how your company supports it’s clients, if it’s better then LL, then kudos to you, but i’d bet money that the majority arent’ any better and rather are far worse – so get over it. Or if you don’t like it, you start your own company, create your own world, find out just how difficult it is to maintain and you do a better job, best of luck…

  47. Sims Rang says:

Booooo! How can you hate the yankees???

  48. Abdiel Nimbus says:

Just to make that one clear.
The only reason i’m posting HERE is, that i simply can’t post it in the other blog entry, as comments are, as usual, closed.
Unfortunately i’m not awake most of the time when these entries are posted, u know, our planet is huge ;). And when i get up, look up the blog and find something that needs to be commented in my oppinion, the comments are already closed.

When i dig through the comments i see the same whine as everytime, mostly of the same ppl as everytime, filling up the 100 comment slots and not leavin a chance for others to post something “important”. Thats annoying me. I want to give some productive feedback, i’m not one of these whiners, but i have no chance at all to comment things.

Be sure, i really do hate hijacking other blog entries to leave my comment, but what kind of choice do i have, if i want to be heard?
+ Can’t post it in the correct blog entry.
+ Can’t post it in the forums.

It’s not my fault, that ppl keep spamming the comments with their whine. I just wanted to say, that if the weather system is going to be changed, they could/should keep in mind all the feature-requests from the past years, because NOW is the right time to include them, if all possible.
Not beeing able to build a “nice” skyscraper, as clouds are inside your building, is something that could be taken care of now, because they’re going to change the system anyway.
This is of utterly importance to me, as i’m a builder and have to mess around with this limitation quite often. :-/
I just wanted to be sure, that nobody forgets to think about that.

And sorry, closing the comments at 100 posts and not leaving any possibility to give some constructive feedback, leaves me with a feeling of “nobody cares about it anyway”. I don’t think it’s wrong to express that, because this is how it makes me feel. And i’m quite sure that i’m not the only one.
And its not a smart thing to give you customers the feeling, that you don’t care about their oppinion.

My fault that i don’t live in the states, and can’t comment on time?
What is the sense behind that auto closing? I simply don’t get it.

Well, have a nice day/night anyway, wherever you’re from. 🙂

A group of us all made the mistake of DRIVING into Boston for the recruiting party – better off using mass transit than trying to maneuver “The Big Dig”.
We all have been looking for follow-up info on Boston Recruiting:

How many people showed up at the party?

Are most of the applicants local, or are more of them “willing to move” to this area/country?

Has LL opened their office in Boston yet?

Will there be more parties, In-World or RL?

Have any of the positions been filled?

What positions have you narrowed down the field, and what positions are still wide open?

What is generally the review/interview process?

Is there anybody we can speak to In-World about employment at LL?

SO i am paying tier fees for a house on land that i can’t see either of them. If i go to the water that is my land i just bounce.
OH and to top it all i never got to speak to someone about my billing. I can’t sell the land i can’t see it or click it !!!! Billing won’t answer the phone for me to cancel my account!!!
