First Look Update. New version available: 58537

Many of you have been asking, what is up with First Look: Render Pipeline Improvements?

You can read Josh’s posting for a complete status update, but the bottom line is, development is very busy on a number of scaling issues and other bug fixes, in addition to the work being done in First Look.

The good news is, First Look appears to be in pretty good shape, and the public testing has been very helpful in performance tuning and tracking down some of the more obscure bugs. Most of the issues we have been chasing down in the last week have been related to other fixes that we have been working on, unrelated to the rendering changes (although there is one major performance improvement in this release).

As Josh mentioned, many of the changes that are now available on the beta grid are also in First Look (only changes that do not rely on server side changes get merged into First Look however).

What gets released exactly when will depend upon how testing of Beta and First Look goes. I am going to stop trying to predict when exactly we will be satisfied enough with the testing to release this First Look but we still hope it will be soon :).

Also, for those who have been wondering if there will be other First Look updates after we release this one, the answer is yes. We already have several candidates in mind and expect that almost all Viewer feature releases will go through First Look before being released.

    i hope i hope i hope this works for me. grabbing it now. the last 2 Fl clients have been progressively worse for me and now i can’t stay in world for more than a few seconds without a crash.

    my billing cycle’s up this weekend and if i can’t get it running on this latest FL/tomorrow’s update, i’m pretty much done for in second life 😦

    Kevin. try to update your video drivers and the like. i can use the regular client and the FL client on vista home premium. i use them every day. i have no issues whatsoever. also it would help to see what you have under the hood instead of a vague off the wall comment about it not working. that way the “techies” can help find the reason why the regular client wont run on your computer.

    So far so good. Esc works again and texture animations seem much better.
    Now for the negatives.
    What is with the new naming? (FIRST LOOK) ?
    ALL CAPS and ( ) in a program name is just EVIL, lol.
    Also it did not clean up the last First Look so the 2 got all mixed together in the same directory and when I clicked on my old icon I was running the previous version and did not even notice at first, lol.
    Then once I did, I ended up uninstalling both and reinstalling the new
    one again to get things cleaned up.

    This version doesn’t overwrite the old version, now you have TWO SecondLife First Look versions if you didn’t un-install the older one. Very annoying.

    Because the new one overwrites all the existing preferences, you might as well uninstall both and then reinstall the new one.

    well, here’s my story. i just did a clean uninstall/ install of 58537. just for good measure i wiped my nvidia drivers with drivercleaner and reinstalled the win xp 93.71 drivers. launched the first look and lo and behold! it is back to freezing up within the first 2 minutes or so, every time.

    until the machine crashes everything looks fine. textures and objects load lightning fast and my frame rate is around 20-25. then without warning everything will freeze. damn.

    i guess that’s it for me. i’ve been struggling with these problems for 2 months now and nothing is getting better. i hope the new improvements help you guys out there, i’m seeing lots of comments
    from folks who are seeing better performance and stability, but my mileage has definitely varied. i’m a little heartbroken to admit, i’m done wasting my time and my money.

    Has anyone taken a look at CPU usage on this versus other releases? I haven’t had time to isolate the new client as the source, but since I’ve been using it I’ve had three BSODs during use, all looking like hardware failures. I realize that hardware and cooling is not LL’s problem but wholly my own, but if anyone else is noting instability on heavily-OCed setups it may be a pointer to a leak or a problem with CPU usage…

    This is on an XP Home rig with a Northwood.

    Physical object updates are still slow, and aren’t being “smoothed” by the client. This isn’t fixed, nor acknowledged.

  18. So far so good, though there seems to be an alpha sorting issue with particles still. Yiffy Yaffle has an email to IM bridge that uses particles inside of a hollow cube with a transparent hole on each outer face. Not only does the particle show through the hole (as it should), it shows through the metal sidings that make up the box (which it shouldn’t).

    Frame rates are once again up a bit, 16 average in Serenity Woods’ sandbox. That’s in contrast to 12 average for the last revision. Turning also seems a lot less painful now, I can almost turn 270 degrees before my frame rate drops below 10. Escape working again is also a major plus. >D

    In a random accident I noticed that teleporting home is now very fast once again, not like waiting to see if my client would crash or not. I also noticed, since the texture console was open, that textures outside of my view are no longer being loaded. This was also evident when I teleported back to the sandbox with my glasses and I saw lots of bare patches in the world with no textures (or ground, for that matter). That’s both good and bad, in that it saves on memory and helps speed things up, but it makes the transition from indoors to full outdoors view a bit harsh, and my frame rate dove to 3 for a few seconds while the client got caught up again. It’s a hard balance to strike I guess. I can live with it as it is now.

    More updates as I discover stuff of note.

    Hmmmm…. this release seems to be good and bad for overall performance on MacOS. FPS shoots far higher than the previous FL in low-prim areas, but overally walking around is kind of choppy. Walking around a varied region is little hiccupy… maybe the change in FPS can be smoothed a little? Walking round my shop got me higher FPS than usual, but the dip in fps when looking into the more hi-prim corner makes a bit of a “bump”…

    I can see this is better performance, but the surges and dips in FPS are a little jarring.

    Otherwise…. Niiiice.

    Well, I’m happy the ESC bug is taken care of.

    But my only complaint is that textures (mainly on trees) are white. Even when coming in close to them, they remain white. I’m not sure if that’s what Feynt was referring to.

    I think I’m going to relog and then switch back. I’d settle for the ESC bug instead of missing textures.

    Well, the new dynamic reflections certainly don’t impact the frame rate much when they’re turned on, which will make a lot of people happy (while, naturally, drawing complaints from the people who wanted mirrors)! But I think perhaps they’re a little *too* fuzzy.

    THe periodic slowdoen to sub 1 fps when in thick prim or av areas is NOT fixed, infact is seems to be even worse than before. Happens more often and for longer periods of time.

    This is a showstopper bug. No release until this is fixed.

  24. On the topic of surging and dipping frame rates, I believe this is due to the client placing some kind of super high priority on texture loading. It’s a tough balance to strike, you either do it this way and you don’t see things as grey masses, or you make texture loading take a back seat to object rendering and things stay grey longer (not to mention things in a loaded area will initially be grey as you turn to look at them).

    I wouldn’t mind a way to choose a texture loading priority though. I for one could deal with stuff being grey for a couple seconds when I turn if it meant little to no frame rate impact.

    I agree with comment 18.

    My FPS no longer drops as much (according to the statitistics bar) since the latest First Look client. But I’m now seeing very choppy performance from the client. When panning around in an area with lots of prims, the client will constantly judder.

    Basically, overall performance in the normal client is still a lot better then the First Look client.

    The only reason why I use the First Look client now is because it doesn’t freeze every 30 seconds like the normal client has been doing recently.

    Few ongoing problems:

    1. New textures that are not applied to surrounding objects (i.e. someone passes you a snapshot or texture, or you upload a texture) still takes extraordinarily long to load, I counted 37 seconds from opening to having the texture fully loaded.

    2. HUDs that use transparency are having problems, to the point of not displaying half of the prims that make up the hud. I’ve put up photos of a recently finished HUD that displays this problem, with Main Viewer vs. First Look comparisons:

    As a side note, I completely uninstalled all other versions of SL off my computer before installing this new First Look, with the exception of the main viewer. (So any other First Look viewers, the old Sati and Aditi grid viewers.) This had the strange effect of removing my preferences from the Main Look viewer the next time I logged into it. Not a showstopper, just thought it was odd.

    A new bug, if you open the full map and just leave it sitting still any water which is in the sim, say ocean or a large lake will become transparent and the objects in SL will show through.

A lot of things seem to be working better (graphics especially ;), but, I now cannot see any transactions that have occurred yesterday at all (on the website)… I hope you guys get the transactions up to date and in realtime like the floater was… its not very kewl NOT being able to see business I have transacted until 2 days later 😦 Patience is a virtue, I understand this, but having no access to a current history makes doing business VERY unfriendly…) We can only hope something is done about this IMMEDIATELY, or commerce WILL begin grinding to a halt… (yes, I know they say something will be done about it, but it is NOT functioning correctly now, and we are expected to try FirstLook for feedback, but for a business owner, that’s really not a feasible option at this point if you want to have a current history) LL PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP 😉

    Tommy, the transactions history was removed deliberately. (See Changes list). I read somewhere this had to be done as it wasn’t scaleable for the future growth of SL. Transactions can be viewed on the web site. I think I am right in this statement. Apologies if I have misunderstood.

    Very smooth version of First Look. Texture animations are very smooth now. Frame rates up nicely by about 30% plus. Particle angles are fixed in the First Look viewer, something I had missed before. What I did find was Select Texture changes the texture of the entire prim instead of just the face that is selected. It will change the color for only the face selected though.

    Oops, spoke a little bit too soon. This release fixed VWR-89 but broke my object that uses llSetPrimitiveParams ans PRIM_TEXTURE as a parameter. I can show you the bug if you need to look at it.

    I still have the same issues that Cory Edo does (#27) with textures. So it’s AV textures (Steve explained this to me) but yes, also with snapshots and try clicking through a vendor with loading textures – takes about 45 seconds to load.

    @21 – I got 27 FPS in Ahern Welcome Area full of bling, flexis, and particles and still held steady at 27 FPS except while turning, which dropped it about 10 FPS and then went back up. I would say that’s pretty good.

    Ugh – not only does “Select Texture” change all the faces instead of just the ones selected, but if you subsequently click “Cancel”, only the selected faces revert to their previous texture; the unselected faces retain the unwanted texture.

    Also, when applying Bumpiness, if you change the bump type to something that hasn’t already been displayed by the client, the prim (or selected face) goes smooth (if there was already a bump on it), and the desired bumpmap does not appear until you deselect the prim or face.

    In the meantime, I’m going to try setting textures via script instead. It only takes 10x as long to insert a custom script into every prim, specify the face, and then remove the script again after texturing..

    WarKirby – you can still drag a texture from your inventory onto a particular face, and it will set the texture only on that face.

    If you wanted to do multiple faces in one shot, I suppose you could select the prims you want to affect, *deselect* the faces you want to have the texture on it, select the texture, and then hit “cancel”…

    Kind of a silly way to do it, though…

    Also, after av textures have already fully loaded, it keeps unloading and then reloading them. Meawhile, linden foliage, and some avs are stuck perma blurry.

    Avs that are trying to load keep stopping halfway and resetting to blurry textures. Reloading again every few secs and never making any progress.

    i have nothing good to say about this update so far.

    Clothes changing still unseats me too — doesn’t matter if I right-click and wear an item, or drag it onto myself. I haven’t tried dragging an entire folder of an outfit on myself; will try that later, but individual item still unsits me. Haven’t tried removing something, either.

    Inspect window is still empty unless I right click again on the object i want to inspect.
    But this release runs much smoother than the 2 previous ones. Goood 🙂

    A bucketload of fixes, then the 2 major showstoppers that make this version unusable for any business owners – applying texture to specific faces is broken and the transaction history is removed before the web site transaction history is current enough to be usable on a daily basis. We can’t tell just our customers to come back in 3 days for an answer, you know.

    This version might be ok for those that just want to play around in SL, but for anybody trying to get serious work done here, this version won’t do it either. 😦

    My guess is that hair and shoes up the arse indicate that the values set that locate these items to your various points are reading 0 (which I assume is the ass position) or less (and therefore finding the ass as a unvalued attachment point). And it happens after TPs. Hmmmm, something in TP (under some unknown condition) is stepping on the location values for attachments. Does this give you (LL) sufficient information to debug? You might try displaying the location values of all attachments before TP and then again after. I hope these tips will help you track down and squash this bug. It’s an embareassedmeant to anyone it happens to in particular and an embareassedmeant to LL in general. Ya’ll are lookin into this, right?

    First Look BUG:

    While editing an object you click select texture and it textures the intire object, not only the face that you highlight.

    NOTE: I really hope the blue menu problem if fixed on this version. It cost a lot of money to me by not allowing me to accept purchased items once the “You paid L$XXX”

    Also one notable instance I seen with that bug was that it didn’t cancel them perse, more it made them invisable. IF you had 2 or more blue menus drop and you clicked the top one it didn’t cancel them. How I know this is because every blue menu that opened afterward had the “>>>” lines depicting there was another meny under it, but when clicked was unable to see it. SO it seemed it was there, just invisable. At least thats how it looked.

    I had installed this viewer while Maint was happening. Sure glad I checked back here before logging in. Building a new house and that select texture bug would have been a real killer.

    Going to use previous FL until this is fixed. Hope it is real soon.

    I’m on an Intel iMac 20″ with 256/2g, and FL viewer has been pretty bad in terms of framerate, but this version is just unusably bad. 😦 Textures load almost instantaneously, which is really nice (the alpha sorting is particularly bad, though), but trying to move around at all, anywhere, means an immediate drop in framerate to a slideshow.

    Motion and animation is lovely in the regular client. Textures of course take forever, but I’m so happy to be able to move that I don’t care.

    Aside from one crash when teleporting in the first session, I’m liking what I see here. Rezzing is much, much faster, and avatar textures hold for long enough for me to get snapshots now, which is great as I’ve got a need to have more than myself for modeling store products, and having the textures derez within 30 seconds before was making that problematic at best. Now, it seems to take upwards of a couple of minutes.

    No framerate improvement noticed, but since I’m not there to do combat, that’s a non-issue right now. 😉

    Sorry, I copied a bunch of changes that came from Beta, but forgot to prune out the ones that require a server side fix, including this one.

    Regarding the the Texture Face bug: we’re working on it. Please keep in mind that this is a test version and identifying bugs like this is the whole point. (This was a side effect of the texture animation optimizations).

    I will tell you iam using only first look when it cam eout, the performance is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better then Alpha version, i will never go back to that!
    Firstlook is always running very good on my system, and don’t mind much about those bugs to much, maybe beacuse i never have seen else and born with it, LOL.
    The refresh performance is much more important to me to have a nice gameplay (!).

    This version appears worse. Vendors on the wall are now disappearing/blend into the wall behind them. That was the first thing noticed. Previous first look versions did not do that.

    Felicat. for some reason this build has (for WinXP) a slightly different name and does not over-write the previous exe file. You might still be using the old version unless you uninstalled the previous version first. I have heard of this happening when people use their own shortcuts rather than the ones made by the FL installer. Confirm that you are loading 58537 on either the log-in screen (lower left corner) or from the menus Help>About.

    I too had problems playing Slingo. It appears to me that the texture is not updating after the animation has stopped. It seems to be showing the last animated frame instead of the proper number.

    Maybe try playing with animated textures truned off. I would have tried it myself, except I did not think of it at the time.

    Well, I just discovered an inconvenient bug in “Appearance”. In most categories (not in “body”, but I presume in all the others) images just reflect the actual state of the avatar, not how would it appear if the cursor was moved in each direction. So basically all the pictures are the same, less the different view angle.

    This is annoying per se, but most of all for non-English speakers, very unlikely to know every single human shape word…

    I cannot tell you much about the computer, it’s not my own. I can tell you it’s fast. I’d very muck like to go inworld and submit the unit to analysis, the world, however, doesn’t let me in from half an hour…

  105. I just have to say that I have been using First look since you offered it for download. I have had a few issues since I started to use this app. but over all? I have had no serious issues such as not being able to sign in on my avatar. As we all know since the last update I have yet to sign in with LadyRose Luna on the regular build. I have worked with you all and over the phone even. The bottom line is I am still unable to log in with LadyRose Luna. I understand that this isn’t the place for this complaint. But to prove my point…. The First Look is by far the better build to date!

    Further to slingo problems.. I deselected the ‘animate textures’ as suggested, but it was little, if any help. The numbers do not roll (just appear) and many are shown incorrectly. Sometimes if you click every number, the correct number does show. Sometimes numbers at bottom do not show, but show as multi-coloured lines. 2 devils in one round occured.

    Otherwise.. I get very high FPS.. nearly 200 in quiet areas and rezzing is almost instantaneous. Still having some problem with flexi prims, but on the whole a great release – apart from the Slingo problems.
