Do Avatars Dream Of Electric Racoons?

If you haven’t seen it already, check out Paul Mason’s BBC Newsnight piece on Virtual Worlds, including a lot of footage from SL and interviews with Robin and Philip. The video will only be available for a limited period, so check it out as soon as you can.

  1. I’ve captured the WM version of the stream (RM is such a pain)

You will need either a Matroska splitter or a player that can handle them natively.

    Players that support Matroska:
    MPC (Windows): http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358
    VLC (All): http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
    Mplayer (Most): http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html

    Splitter for DirectShow (Windows): http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

  2. in retrospect i don’t need to pick a fight with the bbc…

  3. After the show Paul Mason invited residents to join him in the virtual BBC Newsnight Studio at Monema and there were a lot of us there to meet him.

Blind, heh, I’ve got a DVD of the broadcast, but that’s for personal fair use only πŸ˜‰

Nolligan, yes, the meet in SL was lots of fun. I can’t remember seeing as many Brits together in SL before. I’ve got a few screenshots from the gathering that I’ll upload when I get the chance.

The report certainly had a big impact in the UK. Lots of people who glaze over when I try to explain what I do for a living got in touch the day after the Newsnight piece to say “Ahhh, that’s what you play around with all day” and my Mum said she was glad that what I’m working on is the future. I don’t think she was sure before hand πŸ˜‰
