    Let us pray.

  2. 2 theouare Says:

i see no fixes for the Win XP crashes yet, so i won’t be using it as yet . . .

  3. 3 Sarah Says:

Uhh.. is it just me or are eyes only rendering dark O.o

  4. 4 Tillie Ariantho Says:

    Bugs still occuring:

    * Pressing Alt in “edit land” still switches on “show owners” again
    * Every now and then JUNK characters appear in chat line (like a ‘circle’) when using keyboard… seems keyboard handling is bugged
    * Edit object with Rightclick/Edit often only shows an ‘empty’ edit window, you have to rightclick the prim again to get the info loaded into the edit window.

  5. 5 Tillie Ariantho Says:

Forgot this on: I STILL DON’T HAVE ANY SUBFOLDERS IN the LIBRARY! Almost all is gone. Same for Release Version and FirstLook.

  6. 6 Bad Tamale Says:

Entire folders of mine have been missing for weeks now. When is something going to be done about this. I have lost hundreds of textures and other things that I paid for in game. I NEVER get any of the itmes back that go missing. Will someone please look into this. I have sent emails, bug reports and now am trying on here.

  7. 7 Daciana Canning Says:

Will this resolve the constant crashing? If not, then I’ll stick with what I have.

  8. 8 Sarah Says:

@6 Ditto I have lost at LEAST 20k worth the items poses and textures. I have sent at least 7 bug reports about it. NO response, go figure right?

Anyways, It seems half of my eyes, ones mostly black instead of white in them are completely blacked out, almost like its set to be at the darkest setting. When I click appearence though it goes to normal until I get out of appearance again.

Lately I have been having extreme issues teleporting too. Once in about 30 times it will work.

    WinXP Pro
    NVidia 7600GT with latest dirvers.
    2Gig Ram
    Intel 2.8 dual core

I dont usually post specs but yeah thats as far as my lazy butt will write atm after getting my hand jamned in a car door.

  9. 9 Sarah Says:

    Nevermind.. it fixed now.. WooT.

  10. 10 Tim Bartz Says:

Tell me about it! I can’t tell you how much of my inventory has disappeared. I’ve notofied Linden every time and NEVERget anything other than a BOT response directing me to useless help files. The service is disgraceful!

  11. 11 Daciana Canning Says:

If there is anyone who has been experiencing crashing when moving or going to a new world and has loaded this and it has been fixed…please let me know.

  12. 12 Lex Neva Says:

I like seeing a list of public-jira issues fixed in a release. This tool is becoming an important way of communicating issues to LL and seems to be doing a much better job of it than the feature voting tool.

  13. 13 Shenrock Miles Says:

@12: personally, I feel the jira is just one more hoop that has been put up that will confuse the average user. One more place to log-in, one more place to get spam from. All of that and almost as useless as the current means of communications we already have with our ‘dealers of virtual crack’

Then again, it’s pretty much the same with any other online game. It get’s that way because of too many lame phishings and flamings… forums get shut down, doors get closed… a crying shame, really :-/

  14. 14 Karine Koba Says:

Still can’t TP anywhere, clothes are not loading on me.

  15. 15 Becky Nosferatu Says:

Whoo. Congrats on MAKING THE BLOODY FILES corrupted in downloading the thing!

  16. 16 Novae Zymurgy Says:

Without upgrading, my ava was rezzing properly with clothes and everything. However, just like…maybe 25-40 minutes earlier with the rolling restarts, my client freezes and when I log in, I’m in the skin and outfit that I was in earlier this morning. (Even though I had clearly changed my clothes and my skin since this morning.) Now I can’t even change my clothes without my other skins showing up or bits and pieces of my skin not loading correctly.

At least I got one outfit where the entire skin shows up correctly =p

But yeah…I hope that someone is done.

  17. 17 Luna Larsen Says:

i am afraid every time i get to sl. every time i lost something from my inventory. just see it like this: a good way to clean up our inventory :-P
thanks to the lindens to do this work for us :-(

  18. 18 Fran Vollmer Says:

It’s even worse, with the 14.0 I could play for a few mins 1 hour if If i was lucky, now i can’t even get the main screen

  19. 19 Harry C Wright Says:

I’m still seeing Rainbow’s after the download I hope there’s a pot of gold at the end of this come on 2nd Life didn’t have this issue until after the first download and now this pass one didn’t do anything!!

    Harry

  20. 20 Simon Nolan Says:

Woot! So good to see fixes coming in from Jira. Now I really gotta go download the viewer source and play with it some.

I am having occasional crashes when emptying inventory trash. Just had a crash when emptying trash after moving some folders out of trash that I changed my mind about. Gonna see if I can repro it. iMac Core Duo, ATI X1600, OS X 1.4.9, SL 1.14.0.

  21. 21 Trail Says:

I cannot turn around my AV or i crash :(

I do not dare to move.. my viewer crashes :(

  24. 24 Trail Says:

This is weird, my crash problem was SOLVED by:

    1) updating my first look viewer (i tried if that one worked it had to be updated, it said sl 1.14.0 was already installed, did i wanna re-install.. i said sure..)

    2) starting SL using the YES button on end of install, instead of my usual modified auto login icon with –multpiple –login=xxx –password=xxxx parameters

I saw that sl had reset my graphics settings to default on that login. I could use sl.. it was ugly so i pumped my settings back up.. it still works..

    Hope it helps someone.

After updating to the optional viewer, I logged in. Some attachments (HUDs and shoe prims in particular) never rezzed. After waiting about 15-20 minutes I cleared cache, logged back in, waited another 10 minutes or so to see if the items would show themselves. They never did, so I tried attaching them from my inventory and the items (my AO, my prim shoes, etc) give me an error when I try to attach them..

“Unable to create requested object. Object is missing from database.”

  31. 31 Simondo Nebestanka Says:

    @Lulu
    Try the download page here.

  32. 32 Zimmy Ginsberg Says:

So, loads of the serious probs from the other thread fixed then ;)

  33. 33 Zimmy Ginsberg Says:

Judging by the posts, most people crash long before they ever see those trivial bugs

  34. 34 Xanshin Paz Says:

1.14.0.1 is worse than 1.14.0.0 for me. Totally unstable. 1.13 was rock steady, 1.14.0.0 was a bit wobbly, and this latest is a total train wreck. My viewer has balled up 6 times in the last 2 hours. I run an XP mce, P4630 @ 3Ghz, 1G ram , nVidia 7600GT with 256M, openGL 2.01 and my drivers are up to date. If you haven’t downloaded 0.1 yet, don’t !

  35. 35 Xanshin Paz Says:

    re: post 27:

the crashes usually happened when I turned……either standing or hovering. Moving the camera did it, too

  36. 36 Envoy Costagravas Says:

At the very least, the download archive should include past versions of the user-end software so that people can easily roll back to a version that worked better for them. I, unfortunately, automatically allowed 1.14 to install. Not good.

    EC

  37. 37 Arksun Says:

Thanks for the warning, Xanshin, will stick to 1.14.0.0 for now, which has been very stable and fast for me.

One thing though, regarding your openGL version.

I’m running a 512mb Nvidia 7600GS card on mine, but my open GL version is 2.0.3 . Thats the very latest update, you sure yours are up to date on just 2.0.1?

  38. 38 Andromeda Quonset Says:

Where can I download the the 1.13 viewer? It’s not on the download page where it belongs? The download page just has OPTIONAL viewers!

  39. 39 Nate Tripp Says:

I am still experiencing crashes right when I login, I was hoping this would fix it.

  41. 41 Ann Otoole Says:

only issue i have encountered with this release is the view of snapshots/textures cannot be resized vertically. bug report filed.

  42. 42 Azure Says:

It seems like i having loggin problems it couldt not resolve my domain name…

  43. 43 Arthur Market Says:

I continue to be amazed at the negative comments directed to Linden Labs. They had the viewer out there as First Look for a very long time. Everyone had an opportunity to download it, try it and submit bug reports. Just guessing, but those who have the most negative comments didn’t bother to try it. I am running Vista Ultimate and it runs very well with minor adjustments in compatibility mode. You have to keep in mind that a few people running First Look is way different than 30,000 people beating on it. They cannot possibly test for every error condition. If you didn’t participate in the process you have nothing to complain about.

  44. 44 Sandster Says:

This latest update is causing major probelms for my video card; I’m crashing all the time! Why a second update so soon after the other??????

  45. 45 Enki Nephilim Says:

Took three times to get the 1.14.0(1) install to complete. In world I notice more “chat lag” than before, attachments not attaching to the right places, very slow inventory, very slow animation load (ao, etc..) To me 1.14.0(0) seemed more stable and performed quicker.. still cant teleport to locations half (or more) of the time… Very much looking forward to these issues being fixed!

  46. 46 nika talaj Says:

Missing inventory here too, with 1.13.x.x client. Appears not to be client related. Have done all suggested workarounds, filed support request, in-world help, lalala no help from LL. Not buying anything anymore until I’m sure it will not disappear. You’d think the retail community would be up in arms about this …

  47. 47 Shayla Johin Says:

1.14.0.1 is no good… i just installed it, and then logged out, and then tried to log back in, and i cant. it says cannot connect to server.. but obviously my internet connection is fine.. thanks for the link for 1.13.. im going back to that.. hopefully it will work and no inventory items are gone..

  48. 48 element Says:

    no problem here

  49. 49 Dark Otsuzum Says:

Selecting ‘Nearby Local Lights’ in Preferences crashes me every time

  50. 50 Talthybius Brevity Says:

With the previous my only trouble was an occasional psychedelic colored flashing effect in some textures.

with this 1.14.0.1 i’m sort of a half ruth but with my own clothes but tight fitted who can barely walk, can’t TP and gets a download speed of about 3k on a 6MB adsl pipe.

    P4 3GHz
    2GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (256MB)
    bios v5.44.A2.09
    FW v81.98

Thanks for the option, I’m rolling back to 1.13.3.2.

  51. 51 Tyken Hightower Says:

@ Everyone who’s missing inventory due to stuff not appearing:

Try deleting your cache and restarting. I don’t mean hitting the ‘clear cache’ button, this doesn’t work; close SL, find the cache folder in your application data or wherever you’ve set it to, and delete the whole thing. This seems to work for a good many people..

  52. 52 Art Schnabel Says:

This doesn’t help. Nothing helps, not rolling back to 1.13, not updating my driver, not clearing the cache – all of which I’ve tried.

I can’t at this point even get to the login screen, through 1.13, 1.14 or the first look supposed fix.

I’m wasting more time and money by the day.

As soon as I get back into SL – assuming I ever do – I’m selling my land and never coming back.

  53. 53 Zero Wiefel Says:

Im still crashing 20 mins in and its not just SL crash its full on freezing my comp causing me to restart -_- its not my griphic card its updated.

  54. 54 RavenDark Delacroix Says:

Listen up LL! I am missing inventory!

A very important folder and all of it’s sub folders filled with many EXPENSIVE avatars has gone missing! Some of it is not replaceable.

I tried all the tricks, clearing cache, nuking my install of Second Life completely off my computer and reinstalling. Logged in with different clients including back-versions. Nothing….

Other people are complaining of the same thing. Hello? Your database is corrupting! I’ve also seen other symptioms. No trans items suddenly turning sellable. etc.

    DO SOMETHING!

  55. 55 Usagi Musashi Says:

And starts…………….shakeshead we all knew this was coming.

  56. 56 Jayden B Says:

6 Crashes in the Mac Client today, always when just doing nothing. VBO is definately not on.

  57. 57 Kaylan Says:

After updating SL works better for me, It don’t crash that often anymore,
1 or 2 times a hour, and the best NO SYSTEM REBOOTS anymore.

Everybody who have lot of crash try this release but install it in another folder
so you can go back to the old installation. I always install a update in another folder, if it don’t work well i have the old version working.

    i use
CPU: 0.13 micron Intel Pentium 4 (2405 Mhz)
    Memory: 512 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
    Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
    Graphics Card: GeForce2 GTS/AGP/SSE2
    OpenGL Version: 1.5.3

But afte some good things sometihings to improve
-loading texture takes a much longer time
-every few minutes i freeze for few seconds (but no crash)
-and the screen blicks about 3 or 4 times a minute then the menu and the
buttons on the bottom of the screen disappear.

  58. 58 Cherry Cheevers Says:

I’m having severe problems with this latest update. Installed it this morning and now I only get the static login page. Login gets as far as Verifying Version Protocol and then the error message System is down..etc. Obviously the system isn’t down, all the rest of my internet related programs work fine and I can log in using my husband’s machine (I didn’t install the update on that one). I’ve currently got a window to Live Help open who haven’t replied – 35 minutes and counting.
I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the old version, I’ve even completed a system restore. Nothing works. Help!

  59. 59 Dizzie Tizzy Says:

KEYBOARD HANDLING: i now have1-14-00 more or less stabilized apart from occasional unsolicited crashes by manually tweaking settings. SO i wont be upgrading till im forced to. only thing i cant fix is KEYBOARD handling sometimes i can do my usual 100wpm and other times 1 character per second, and that is with me pounding the keys. PLEASE DOES ANYONE HAVE A FIX FOR THIS KEYBOARD PROBLEM since i see i am not the only one who suffers with it.

for the people who look half ruth and half human, this happened to me on st patricks day inworld and it turned out my skin was corrupted. new freebie skin and ruth left me.

my thanks to those nameless slifers who contribute open source fixes that help dumbos like me!

  60. 60 Elissa Bristol Says:

I feel you Sarah, have been playing almost 2 months now and have lost a grand total of 18,345 Lindens in clothing and other items because of mysteriously dissappearing inventory items. Complain and complain and Linden Lab doesn’t do anything. They need to put a restitution plan in place for this: either that or hire more of their useless Lindens to handle this problem. In fact, I even know of someone who uses tools a Linden gave her…most of them are nasty tools that can keep you off of your land when you have her banned, etc. Sent many complaints about those as well…nothing is done of course because for the rich people, what’s 20k worth of stuff? I’m about to stop recommending this game to my friends (those who’ve played the Sims 2 and want something more expansive).

I’m glad to see that I am not alone in suffering the missing Library folders problem, I can confirm that this isn’t client related but seems a server side problem.

  64. 64 Jan Brown Says:

This version still crashes on me when the log in screen is loading. Cries

I guess I’m still stuck using version 1-13-3-2. It’s the only one that works for me.

  65. 65 Digger Oppewall Says:

I have also had some missing folders, not much, mostly the thing that bothers me is that I now have about 20 lost and found folders. In the fix before this one, earlier in the week, I had my gestures show up in the lost and found. I cannot delete the extra folders. Any advice would be appreciated!

  66. 66 Kaylan Says:

after last message my sytem reboot twice. This update is more stable for me than
1.14.0.0 but i am glad that i have 1 1.13.3.2 also that version is much better.

I hope they don’t make this version mandotory before they fix more bugs.

  68. 68 bigpimp allen Says:

So I downloaded the new 1.14.1.0 viewer thinking “hey good, they got the bugs worked out”. WRONG. This view run’s way slower than 1.13.3.2. I dont know why, but for what you get in 1.14.1.0 it is not worth it to download. I would hate to think with all the people posting problems (and the ones who do not, just live with it) the Lindens would sit up and take notice and release 1.13.3.2 back to the public as a solution. It is OK to admit you made messed up, just make your customers (something the Lindens forget now and then…. the fact that we are their customers) happy and allow them to go back to the old view. I am just thankful that I did not delete my old set up files!

  69. 69 Usagi Musashi Says:

The 1.14.1.0 is even more unstable……..crashie crashie crashie!

  70. 70 Sys Slade Says:

@20: “starting SL using the YES button on end of install, instead of my usual modified auto login icon with –multpiple –login=xxx –password=xxxx parameters”

I have stopped using -multiple altogether unless I know I need both accounts on at once. Seems to perform worse than just a regular single login. Of course, that may be down to transient grid issues during testing.

@11: “If there is anyone who has been experiencing crashing when moving or going to a new world and has loaded this and it has been fixed…please let me know.”

One thing that always seems to crash my G/Fs PC is teleporting while the radio stream is running. Since the update, it happens less often but does still happen.

  71. 71 Wiseguy Capra Says:

If you open a image in a window (like texture preview of a set of textures) it will show the size at the bottom of the screen with 0×0.

If you try to resizes the window so you can read the names of the textures or to make a image larger it wont stretch to it’s full size.

Meaning only the window does get larger but the image doesn’t.
    This is since SL 1.14.0

  72. 72 Rockas Says:

Still crashes on my system :-(

  73. 73 khalida Juutilainen Says:

Is this supposed to fix all the probs with laptops? lack of drivers etc? probs with textures causing crashes when avatar moved around?

I’m scared to try because I don’t know how to get back to square one again.

  74. 74 Arianna Oranos Says:

It’s MUCH worse than before on my computer. Even with bumpmapping/shiny and nearby lights disabled, all I get is textures loading and rezzing all over the place even when I’m in relatively empty places. Also, many prims appear missing. Looks like this viewer is – once again – a dud.

  75. 75 Domch Raymaker Says:

I’m usually very patient, but with the new version I’m crashing with almost *every* teleport, and my patience is really running out. :( The load up time is longer than any previous client I’ve used as well.

  76. 76 vARdis Varga Says:

THIS UPDATE IS THE WORST EVER, I have crashed no less than 60 times in 3hrs, cannot stay in sl 4 longer than 5 mins. The previous update was bad with frozen avatar and tp problems but this one takes it 2 far.I hav been in sl premium paying customer for nearly a year and now I am so frustrated with the crashes that I am getting close to cancelling sl 4 ever as it is no fun when you crash everytime because of being mislead by so-call updates for better performance….NOT HAPPY!!!

  77. 77 brazil comet Says:

I returned to the previous version of the viewer. Less problems but what i feel is that from the time this viewer is introduced the whole grid is lagging heavily. I don’t know if that relates to the introduction of the viewer or to something else.

I would suggest to LL that maybe taking off this release would might help bringing back stability on all grid. Unless the instability on grid these last days is due to other reasons and not the viewer.

  78. 78 Mordyth Ahn Says:

I’m new to this world and should never have updated. I had no problems with the original download but when I updated my computer crashed twice scaring me to death (not being a techie). I won’t be visiting SL again until I see that things have settled down.

This has never happened before. I have never had a BSOD on this machine. Only thing different is this version of SL viewer.

    Crash log sent.

Will try again and see if it repeats.

  80. 80 Waster Skronski Says:

    Running at Winxp-pro sp2 V2002

And i have no problems. not worse then last one.
I can say there even some slight inprovements like discribed.

    My Specs.
    ASUS kt880
AMD 2800 Athlon, 5th gen, “Barton” XP @2.08 ghz, FULL fsb, 512K
ASUS 6600 GT – AGP.. Dual monitor.
    MAXTOR: Sata1 Stripe raid0 – 400gb +- 6gb/sec (dual hard drives)
    KINGSTON: 4*512mb DDR @333/400 mhz

This system is from about the year 2002 and always has been upgraded by myself with top brand parts. Ive been messing with pc for about more then 2 decades. AMD 32bit cpus are know tobe less stabile then intel types. while AMD cranks out way more but also create way more temperture.

Specs donot meen stability. every piece of hardware can have its own effects on stability even in combo with drivers and software, 64bit cpus are NOT more stabile by default. Your cpu+mem+mainbord is what makes your “golden triangle” when theres something wrong there you never will have stability! golden triangle is what provides stability. hardware speed or ratings dont meen nothing if that keeps messingup. if your going to buy a new pc watch Quality of mainbord+cpu+mem and its cooling.

Now im not saying your computer is crab, but consider the next issues.

If you did buy your pc in a cheap mass sale.. then mostlikely they didnt use topself parts. even if its 64bit. or one week old or some crazy name. quality matters!, these pc usualy contain the minimal stuffs. small slow harddrive. integrated vid, minimal cooler. get the point here. minimal.

Secondlife is a CPU hog.. devices might overheat and decrease stability perhapse even crash whole pc. most of the times computers need to be fitted with larger cooling systems for gaming. specialy in warmer weather. Cpu/MEM/Mainbord and drives (golden triangle & storige) will overheat, also fans collect dust, if your pc is like a year or older it would be a good idea to let it those be cleaned out, specaliy if you smoke around it. Fans just freezeup all the time by collecting dust and ecfectively stop turning and cooling. (not kidding).
Just a proper (larger) cooler will do, you dont need fluid cooling.. (what if that starts leaking, then the drama of the huge size of it. attacking pc with drills and such NOOOO!) a normal (good/larger) cooler costs about 10-30$ (depending on cpu) costs to install it shouldnt be that high.

Also some cards you might have in you computer. like a tv card can couse serous issues with your vidcard. specaly if they are the older types. to give an exsample. Sb life/audigy cards are nutorius for messingup on VIA MB chips and there timing. its a good idea to tossout cards you dont longer use. even cards that came from other pc’s might got dammaged there. Get the painfull story here.

Yes secondlife crashes.. it does.. but it also depends what quality hardware you use and its health it is in and even combos to this. (temp/voltage and hardware in the whole system)

Theres mannymore reasons and exsamples to this. most of them moddel specific. Computers might be a Blownup calculators. but they far from perfected! pc’s are moduliar, it can be buildup out manny parts.. This doesnt make it easy to write software to fit all, it makes it inposible to serve all in one solution couse all these varations in cards, cpus, maibords, OS types and so on. only thing you can do is get the most current hardware. but that might not be fully suported yet.. annyways get my point.

    Back to topic.

Even when i visit bussy sims what always crashed me randomly, this client keeps up going.

And things seems to be working better, verry excited SL is back on a road to being pleasent once more to spend time in, my major frustration is lag.. considering im in europe. 300 ping. and some freezes here and there isnt so bad i presume. specialy when there about 30k+ on the grid.

    Try this..
    Nvidia vid card: http://nvidia.com
    - or -
    Ati vid cardi: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

This also might help. i asume you must alrdy have this..

    M$ direct-x : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&displaylang=en

if this all didnt work.. you could try a fresh OS (window) install
(i dont recoment this couse you loose everything)
but it will reveal if its anny software/drivers you might have installed.(try SL, install something else and try SL again, repeat)

next step would be extracting cards.. but this is best done by a qualifyed person.

I dont recoment messing yourself with PC’s if you dont know what your doing.. most of the time you will messup your garantue with doing it yourself! or worse. just dont open the casing let someone thats qualified do it.

Harware temperture under stress is something tobe looked into if you keep crashing.
Specialy if you smoke around your pc.
Specialy if your in a hot weather area.
Specialy if you didnt check that for a long time.
    Specialy if it runs 24/7
faster systems create more heat need more cooling… specialy with games.

Hope this all helped a bit.

I just hope LL keepsup fixing instead of adding new features, im realy excited about something that actualy promises what it actualy does.

  81. 81 Bianca Kendall Says:

Crashes have increased considerably since 1.14.0 and rezzing takes much longer. I also started getting about an 80 – 90 % TP failure rate, but that is the one thing that appears to have been resolved by 1.14.0.1.

One differences in the crashes since 1.14, is the fact that they now happen almost all the time without any warning whatsoever. One second all is normal, the next my screen has shut down and I see the crash logger.

Another problem that was happening before, seemed to improve with 1.14.0, but has gone back to the status quo with 1.14.1, is that the crash logger never seems to stop. If I don’t close it, it will say it is transmitting data all night, until I do stop it.

  82. 82 Jacob Silvera Says:

Land texture/color is not rezzing, its gray. Seems to be fine if I relog 2 or 3 times but still a bit annoying.

I’m on a Mac G5 tower with 2Gb mem and a tera of harddrive. It’s quite a machine. I used to have problems with all these viewers crashing – flashing textures, inability to walk in a straight line, hair and boots up the ass, periodocially missing folders, permanently missing inventory, cash outs subtracted from my SL balance and never added to my RL paypal, UI size changes suddenly snapping to full size, cam freezing, missing texture designwear, skin-tight smoking jackets, ruthing at entirely inappropriate times, bug reports concerning production and first look viewers not being addressed, complaints about people postin shit in the live music events category about how to make money on sl or asking me to become part of some freekin survey, people not showing up as online in my friends list that I’m lookin at standing in front of me, teleports failing, teleports leaving me in some kind of limbo where I have to restart my whole damn computer to get out of, everything rezzing but the one sign .5 meters in front of me I want to read, nothing rezzing but the one sign .5 meters in front of me I already freekin read, notices in my email of ppl giveing me inventory that isnt in my inventory when I sign in, bent knees I can’t straighten up, dances I can’t quit, huds that wont rez, a bunch of vehicles that are useless because they just look silly if you even think about using them, jeans for males that arent labeled low-rise when you buy them so freekin often I just wont buy any jeans anymore, shops with gift items that are all no transfer, and the occasional idiot who whows up nekid at a live event like oh my gawd what is the werld coming to I am so freekin shocked to see an idiot show up nekid at a live event like that aint never been done before everybody stop what yer freekin doin and have a hissy fit over this major disruption and hey yer weener dont even match you tard, and my skin all looks normal except I have a dark brown head, or dark brown arms which would be ok cept the rest of me aint dark brown, eternally loading notecards I aint never got to read, grey gobs and sheets instead of a nice particle display, and group notices that never go out, just to name just a few.

I’ve quit smoking around my computer and everything works well now. Thank you LL.

  90. 90 Johnny Sleestak Says:

    Windows XP SP2

    Tested it on 4 machines.

This client still has a GIANT memory leak. Before making it mandatory this needs to be fixed. In just a couple hours all my Virtual Memory is gone. Windows needs to increase my Virtual Memory. Only way to clear it out is to shut down the game and restart. One machine after running the game it has to be completely rebooted to clear it out enough.

I have a choice, play SL for a couple hours and do nothing else on my machine because there is no memory resources, or use the old client. Downgraded all the clients again to 1.13

  91. 91 DR Dahlgren Says:

I agree totally with the above on both 1.14.0.0 and 1.14.0.1. While I have not received the “increase virtual memory” error, once either of these viewers runs, I can no longer access WinExplorer or any other major app on my machine with out a reboot. In the previous client, and the first look client that proceeded the 1.14 release, I could run PSCS2 and SL with no problems. Now, even after I shut down SL, I can not load PSCS2 with out rebooting machine.

STILL crashing with 1.14. I last no more that 3 or 4 minutes, then the screen locks up. It disables the entire PC and I have to perform a hard reboot.

There is no set activity that happens prior to the crash. It has happened when chatting to a friend, resizing textures on an object, scrolling through my friends list or just walking around.

I have not updated my graphics card driver. Both times I have attempted to do this previously (with this PC) the modern marvel that is Windows XP has automatically wiped out the drivers that pertain to OE and my internet connection and that results in me having to take the PC to a professional to restore those drivers. Why is it that when Microsoft try to make a feature idiot-proof, they make it impossible for me to perform a simple action and make ME feel like an idiot? It used to be so easy with older versions of Windows. LOL.

    My rant for the day…

    Please, PLEASE Lindenfolk:

It is NOT reasonable to design softfare or a game system that REQUIRES users to continually update drivers for the up-to-the-second versions, especially if the drivers are inappropriate to their recent, well-made PC systems. My system is excellent (Pent 4 with 3.40 ghz, 2gb RAM, on XP and a GeForce 7800 GTX card), well beyond the requirements for SL, and I update all software through the manufacturer. The drivers are the latest for my year-old, Dell-designed system. I had their techs crawling about my system’s innards (well, the PC at least). Both they, and NVIDIA, tell me I have the best for my system (which again, is well beyond the requirements of SL).

We are not all tech freaks, and we cannot buy new cards at the drop of a hat (or of a buggy SL viewer).

If you want to build a base of loyal, paying, active, non-churning CUSTOMERS, you must create an system that supports a wider number of cards and/or drivers.

I CANNOT use 14, either version, with GeForce 7800 GTX, even with the newest drivers anyway. Furthermore, if I try the drivers which are intended for my great system, I have to deal with degraded graphics for any other use of my PC. Yes — SL might be OK (which would be interesting to see if it did not freeze), but anyhing else I use, such as Photoshop, is terribly degraded. You can’t seriously expect us to switch drivers every time we switch programs.

As I mentioned in the blog comments for the viewer issues, I rolled back the viewer to the last version, and kept the drivers Dell tells me are the BEST AVAILABLE for a CURRENT release high-end Dell system. This seems to be a workable solution until LL can revamp the viewer.

At least I hope you will. I am not buying a new card just for SL.

  117. 117 Ox64 Sachs Says:

Previously I tried the 1.14 and could not even get SecondLife to load at all. It would immediately come up with a crash error right after displaying the “SL is changing settings, blah blah to enhance performance” or whatever it says (crashes too fast to see). Uninstalling and reinstalling did no good, same results. I reverted back to 1.13 for the past 2 days. Tonight I updated my ATI video driver as they released a new version 3 days ago. Allowed SL to update to 1.14.0 Build 1 and now things works great! FPS performance has went from 7-10fps to 80-90fps. Animations are very realistic looking and smooth. Looks promising as no crashes are occuring. I STRONGLY encourage everyone having issues to make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

textures load partially pretty quick then takes forever to load fully. Unsuable viewer.

secondlife just freezes for no reason. for minutes. unusable viewer.

OK here is your clue programmers: you will program using a sim with 100 avatars in it and 5000 scripts running rotating signs and sex poses and jevn vendors going like crazy. and you will do this in the main grid so there is no question that you are seeing the actual results of your programmiong.

the ballyhooed first look viewer is garbage. scrap it. time for a new programming staff.

  121. 121 Eddie Bombast Says:

Wow Thank You! I went from either crashing or my computer completely locking up every other time I sign on to now where I lock up after 20 seconds every time!!! Im so happy you guys are looking out for your paying customers. I have a deal for you. Why don’t i just come over and hand you money to tear up in front of my face and cut out the game where you pretend to actually care about your customers. I am so excited to see the mess your going to create with adding voice too!! I love how you people listen to your customers!!! Just because 9 out of 10 users would rather see you try to make this game actually stable and usable then see you add more features is all the more reason to keep giving us versions that don’t work and add features nobody has asked for. Bravo to your customer service!!!!!

  122. 122 Maximilian March Says:

I am experiencing a problem that I HOPE is a bug and not a policy change. Specifically, if I try to EDIT any object that I do not own, in the past the Edit window would show just about everything I’d see if I selected one of my own objects, I just couldn’t change anything. NOW, all data is blank. It only shows information on objects I already own. Reasons why this is SO important: 1) One of the KEY things that perpetuates the SL economy is the ability to easily check the CREATOR of an object that catches one’s eye and then go onto the profile to find out where to buy your own. 2) As a creator of objects for sale, I also count on this kind of “word-of-object” ripple sales that come from making objects that other people like. 3) When looking at an object for sale (especially furniture), I always check the object EDIT menu to inspect how many prims comprise the object. Not knowing that PRIOR to point of purchase is a deal killer in a lot of circumstances. Not willing to make a non-refundable purchase to find that out later. If this is a bug, please fix it. If this is a policy change, PLEASE revert to AT LEAST leave the INSPECT window but the way you already had it was perfect. People need to see the name of the object, the number of prims, the owner (w/ profile link) and the creator (also w/ profile link). In any event, please PLEASE fix this. Thank you very much for all your efforts. They are greatly appreciated. ~Max~

  123. 123 Kenbro Utu Says:

Well I gotta say I was scared to death to load this new version for the past few days with all the problems reported, but tonight I did the upgrade. OMG what a difference. This is the very first build where VBO has made a noticeable difference, emphasis on noticeable. What used to be my max frames is now my minimum frames. This thing is smooth as butter. Frames rates are generally doubled. No complaints here…

    P4 2.4 1 gig mem
    ATI 9700 Pro

  124. 124 Ann Otoole Says:

what good is a zillion fps when the viewer freezes up all the time? the fps seems to no longer be associated with what is displayed on screen. Dual SLI nVidea 9800 pros and 2GB RAM on 64 bit AMD windows xp

  125. 125 Kenbro Utu Says:

Well, that is the thing. This viewer is superior in all aspects as far as my experience tonight. I thought it odd when all of the previous first look viewers gave some such a boost in performance to others, when I saw very little myself. I just thought they should know that it indeed works very well for some.

BTW, the 9800 pro is an ATI card, AGP, and never SLI… You must mean 7800?

  126. 126 Baboli Silverstar Says:

I have now switched to the First Look viewer and it is so much faster and smoother than 1.14.0.1, and it doesn’t crash.

Version 1.14.0.1 runs at about 12 fps with all the graphics maxed up. The First Look version runs at 37 fps with everything maxed up.

Have gone back to the very stable and reliable last FirstLook release which plays for hours without glitching.
Am suprised that we go from a stable FirstLook version to a bug filled official release.
“Hey the development version is ok!”
“Cool! Now lets change it some more and release it before testing the changes!”

Perhaps this is not the right place to post this / but with all the negative comments I keep reading / I thought a positive one was overdue. Earlier today I was attacked 2 times with in 20 minutes in my home / the first goof ball with a giant penis demanding sex was dealt with by my friend who was visiting at the time and we filed an abuse report. / 20 minutes later we were attacked by self replicating BuzzBee’s / neither one of us could get rid of them / we were able to get the creators name and filed an abuse report again, then this person’s name simply disappeared from the user database shortly afterwards, but his self replicating garbage remained. / I made an urgent request for help and within seconds a Linden ~ Lucy Linden ~ showed up and cleaned things up / Thanks Lucy :_) / so for all the complaining that we all do, and myself included. I know the Lindens are trying as much as they can to make SL a better place
So I ask you all who read this / please keep this in mind/ We are all only humans / and no single person anywhere is perfect
Other than that once the attachment problem after Teleport is solved I believe we will have a stable client

I am experiencing extended periods of framerate drops (~1.5fps) with the new viewer for no apparent reason. Sometimes the issue can be resolved by minimizing the viewer window, opening the snapshot UI or stepping across a sim border. I tried disabling/enabling OpenGL extensions, but that didn’t help. The frame console (debug menu) shows the white “RenderGeom” bar at about 90% during these periods.

This never happened with the old viewer. The old one froze occasionally for several seconds but then recovered quickly.

I am getting various messages while TP’ing too, e.g:
You’re not cool enough to go there, and This is your last teleport, get used to walking and Wonder if you’ll have any clothes when you get there.

All hilarious I’m sure, if I could get to my party without seeing everyone else as grey (and them likewise) and crashing 3 times in the past 10 minutes.

  150. 150 Amanda Ascot Says:

A funny thing happened on my way to work … actually just before I left. I wanted to log in to SL to check something. 1.14 was working just fine for me yesterday. Today it crashes before I ever see the log-in screen — every time. So does the last FirstLook, which was also working yesterday. I changed nothing on my machine. If the new “optional” browser becomes the official one, and 1.13 is no longer supported I might as well throw in the towel because the new browser no longer works for me.

  151. 151 Shiva Aabye Says:

    @#96 && #104

Wired. It disappears to quick, but I think I’ve seen something like “You’re not cool enough to…”.

  152. 152 Jesper W. Says:

Alpha stacking = useless in this release. Not just incorrect sequence of alphas, but some disappear alltogether.
Since apparently it’s the “alpha sorting improvement” also present in FL that is causing stacked alphas to mess up completely, one has to stay in 1.13 to have working alpha.

    So that’s what I’m doing for now…

All I can say is… Welcome to SL. the land of problems and over loaded data bases.

They need to upgrade there database servers but don’t want to spedn the money to do it. so they keep trying little bandage the problem and as you all can see its only making it worse, they need to stop being cheap and buy new data base servers.

  154. 154 Nou Corleone Says:

    April Fool?

  155. 155 Amanda Ascot Says:

Hmmm … did the -noaudio thing for 1.14 and now it loads. Somebody explain to me why it worked great for me yesterday (better than 1.13, in fact) and suddenly, today, right out of the blue, I get hit with that issue.

    *shakes head*

I understand how LL might be confused as to why this should occur, but this is something that *must* be fixed before this release hits the Grid as a required update, even if it means rolling back some code in 1.14 until the problem is isolated. I’ll do without all the nice extra features and bug fixes for a stable client that doesn’t require me to degrade my SL experience any more than the server overload already does.

  156. 156 Stefano Murolo Says:

Sorry to say this, but Build 1 has the same problem of 1.14.0 (see comment #130 of that subject blog page).
In short, after installation: FPS 2 to 3 (!!!) and packet loss from 20% to 60%. Impossible to play. I have Norton Go-Back and I went back in time before 1.14.0.1 installation. So now I can play normally.
I cannot say exactly how I solved the same issue with 1.14.0.0, I can just say that I tweaked with preferences at random, setting all the preferences back as beferore installation when the system performed well. Apparently there is a transient period after installation when everything is slowed down. After about 2 days things go better than the previous version. Does it make sense?
Another issue, common to versions 1.13 to the latest: installing SL destroys my Windows theme setup. I am on XP professional and I like Windows Classic as theme. After all start up the desktop is set at Windows XP theme, even when I set it Classic before shut down. To solve this I hade to reinstall the theme.

COULD YOU PLEASE, I BEG OF YOU, PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE OFFER A DOWNLOAD OF THE PREVIOUS 1.13 VERSION?

I am not the only one here asking for this. Perhaps we might be on to something and the 1.14.0 client is actually really screwed up, like so many of us told you.

  158. 158 Arksun Says:

    Tijn,

The 1.14.0.0 client has been a miracle for me, finally heavily loaded texture/av areas have a smooth high frame rate!. Massive improvement over 1.13

I find 1.14.0.0 the most stable so far, but dont dare to try the optional 1.14.0.1 , as i’ve heard from fellow people that also loved 1.14.0.0, that this new (1) version is a big downturn.

So for my own personal selfish interests, dont make 1.14.0.1 compulsory, stick to 1.14.0.0 :D

We’ll never know the full impact of course for those having major probs, because all the ones loving 1.14 aren’t like me posting here, they’re just getting on with having a good time in-game, as they have no reason to view or post in the blog!.

Loaded yesterday. Noticed alpha problems . Then crashed (maybe 5 minutes after logon). Crashed a few more times. Gave up. Read this blog. Decided to try again this evening. Still crashes.

In the past two years this is by far the worst update for me; I even sailed through other updates that broke most machines.

My specs are similar to a few others here so no need repeating. Crash logs being sent. Time to revert.

Is there any way to go back to delete this upgrade and go back to the 1.14.0.0 version that actually worked??

  174. 174 Farallon Greyskin Says:

#123 THe giant pause when starting a movie or even having the movie URL change while you are watching it has always happened to me :(

I thought about being able to run an external slide show that way since QT can display jog fels, but it turned out to be too annoying because of the giant pauses.

  175. 175 Gringo Star Says:

Okay, 3 different machines, a Compaq TC1100 with 1 gig of RAM(1.2ghz pentium M), a HP m260n with 512mb of RAM, and an HP Pavilion notebook with dual core and 2 gigs of RAM….

These 1.14.x versions are slowly eating up RAM and over time generate huge terribly large swap files and finally crash. The TC1100 had the first total system freeze the person had ever seen… not errors, no nothing, just screen locked up with last picture and the system could do nothing else. No hard drive thrashing either. Just total freeze.

The HP desktop and the TC1100 are both Nvidia chipsets and the Pavilion is the latest and greatest Intel mobile video chipset. I don’t have more info as I’m reporting back second hand from other users. All 3 of us have seen the same problem on different machines. The desktop with 512mb of Ram ended up with a 2.5 gig swap file from running nothing but second life for over 24 hours and by the time I went to logout, it took the application literally close to half an hour to close down, constant disk thrashing the whole time.

1.13.x never did this, and no other application has done this. I know I need more RAM, but this is definetly a bug, and the other machines with more RAM are getting the “windows is resizing the swap file” message to eventually.

  176. 176 Amanda Ascot Says:

@125: Gringo, I can second your observations, here. I’m running on an HP Pavilion zd8000, which used to breeze through SL with no problems back when concurrency was just reaching 20K and everyone was screaming about lag and other issues. The last several upgrades have made it seem like I’m running on a machine from the early 90s with a dial-up modem and, worse, I’m seeing memory getting eaten away at a frightful rate. I used to just put my computer into “hibernate”. Now I have to do a full shut-down after every use of Second Life. We all know the client had a memory leak from long ago. It seems to be much worse, now, and the huge swap files and disk thrashing aren’t helping performance much, either. More often than not when I exit SL I have to manually terminate the program because it takes so long to close out, itself. And, of course, when the crash logger crashes consistently … well, what I can say?

  177. 177 Usagi Musashi Says:

I’m trying to run a museum, synagogue and jewish community center. I have a benefactor that has just placed an order for an island. If not, than I’ll tell him to cancel the order. I need this to be fixed. This is absolutely ridiculous. How can you expect us not to go to Playstation Home if you can’t get it together? Everytime you update, there are an absurd amount of issues. I’m sure Sony won’t have these problems…

I need a response. Even a simple, “We don’t care enough about our customers to really own up to the issues” would at least be better than nothing.

What happens to me often too: total cpu freeze when checking profiles. It takes a lot to make a mac freeze nowaday.

And has anyone had this strange freaky experience:

  186. 186 JayR Cela Says:

What is Wrong With Second Life 1.14.0.1 and in General ?

1.14.0.1 simply does not work worth a darn, it should be tossed in the trash can where it belongs. Example, this morning I fired it up and logged to my last location, I was completely Ruth’d, could not even edit my appearance, not to mention all the difficulty I had over the weekend with this client. So I cleared cache and re-logged, same problem, I uninstalled 1.14.0.1 and wiped out the cache directory completely, reinstalled, same problem. So I loaded up the last First Look client 13.3.4.59748, and it runs like a top now. Go figure that one out :) .
When I was participating in the First Look program I thought it was a wonderful idea, a great deal of progress was made and I was thrilled to be contributing, to what I believed was a major turning point for Second Life and Linden Labs. Also we were told that the last First Look client was actually the same as 14.4.0.0 only the release number was different. Boy was that untrue! :( Well 14.4.0.0 as most of us reading this blog know, was a disaster, and the 14.4.0.1 client seems to have strayed even further away from the progress that was made during the First Look program. So my question is , what the heck happened ?
Is there a problem with team leadership within the programing department ? Is it a matter of utter incompetence, or perhaps, sabotage from within the ranks of Linden Labs itself ?
I came to Second Life a year and one half ago after surviving a stroke, and being pretty much home bound during my recovery, I was very happy to be able to enjoy myself, even if it was just my imagination, as opposed to physical activity. I could do things for myself again.
Before my illness, I ran my own successful business for 18 years and over that period of time, I had employees come and go , some of their own accord, with my best wishes to them, others I had to let go, because they were not an asset to the company, witch was difficult for me, because I knew they needed the job I was providing, but The Bottom Line was just that, THE BOTTOM LINE ! It seems to me that something is slowly killing this product, almost methodically.
Also while I was an employer, I watched several of my competitors fold, as well as 2 former major regional retailers my company provided service to, and in all case’s the reason’s were pretty much the same, INTERNAL ! Weather it was poor employee performance, theft from within, or, some one out to do the company in, because of a personal vendetta, or in some cases the company trying to grow faster ( in order to gain more market share ) than they were capable of, or adequately prepared for.
Personally I believe it is time for Linden Labs to reevaluate where they are now , where they want to go, and devise a solid game plan with some amount of flexibility allowed for unpredictable events, in order to get there.
I have time and time again watched as Linden Labs insists upon adding new feature’s to an unstable product. This defies all sensible logic, and seems, to be similar to, self destructive behavior observed in the mentally ill, or those afflicted with drug or alcohol addiction.
The addition of voice capabilities is an all to obvious example of this behavioral pattern. Not only is the product itself so bug ridden and flawed, to add more complexity before solving the glaring issues that are literally staring Linden Labs right square in the face, makes no sense what so ever from a BOTTOM LINE point of view, other than to appease large corporate entity’s that wish to make Second Life an extension of First Life. ( Real Life )
So at that point. The phrases, Your World, Your Imagination. Second Life is a 3D on line digital world, IMAGINED, CREATED, & OWNED BY ITS RESIDENTS, goes right out the window, you are throwing the baby out with the bath water, so to speak.
In addition lets mention the cross gender role players male and female alike ( of witch I am proud to say I am included ) who will be alienated, with voice. If some viable voice masking technology is not implemented.
Personally I don’t care, or try to hide the fact I am a male with a female Avatar. If people ask me I tell them, If they don’t ask, I don’t say anything. I play my role as a legitimate non sexual activity female business person. But without some sort of voice masking technique correctly applied. ( I would at least like to have a females voice represent my character ) it ruins the whole illusion and immersion of ones self into the RPG genre, of the platform. And how about all the Dragons and Furies, the Androids or whatever the case may be. Heck there goes the fantasy part, Whoosh !! Gone
Then will come as Ross Perot so aptly said before the NAFTA free trade agreement was signed into law. Your going to hear one big giant sucking sound, at least from all the loyal people not employed by Linden Labs, who have stuck by your side, and have remained loyal, helping you literally build Second Life from the ground up. Phillip you are deserting us, in order to appease the likes of IBM and other large corporations, ( Whom by the way are notorious for being back stabbers, and thieves, ever hear of having your ideas stolen right out from underneath you.) with what seems to be absolutely no consideration for the very people who have helped you along the way.
If you survive, at that point. You may as well Change the name from Second Life to something more appropriate, hmm ? let’s say Second Space ( ala MySpace )
But how can you possibly accomplish all that Second Life can be. When WE THE CUSTOMERS can not even Teleport from one location to another without having to re log to get our prim attachments back, and located where they are supposed to be, ( if they even survive the TP at all.) the inability to TP altogether sometimes. Loss of inventory or having it take upwards of an hour to fully load. Numerous crashes, inability to have more than 40 or so avatars in a single sim at one time, and so on and so on.
With all due respect Phillip the 1.14 client is a major improvement in regards to the speed at witch it renders, much more efficiently than 1.13 ever did. But I believe it is time to consider cleaning house, and regroup. Perhaps reinstating the FL program where you left off with 1.3.4.59748 and continue to hammer away at all the issues that so sorely need to be addressed, may be a good place to start. But I am not an employee of Linden Labs so I can only make observations, speculate, and offer suggestions.

In Closing I would like to remind anyone who is reading this. Real Life is right outside your door.

    Respectfully

Upgraded to 1.14.0.1 and wished I hadn’t. Huge memory leak forcing me to constantly close and re-open the client (if I can without a reboot!). Lag shot way up and stays there from the moment I log on, even in virtually empty zones. AV eventually freezes and cannot move or transport.
1.13 didn’t give me such grief, even when running on an older 1.6GHz box with only 32MB of shared video! What happened in 1.14.xx to foul it up so badly??? I thought the FirstLook program was supposed to help work out most of these bugs, not propagate them.

  196. 196 Gringo Star Says:

JayR – I think your observations and opinions on what is wrong with Linden Labs is way over the top. What really stands out to me in particular is that after dumping on LL for having a broken development process and bug ridden software, you then say something like they’re trying to appease the likes of IBM.

I’ve heard this before and frankly, I’m not sure where this perception of IBM comes from, that they are appeased by software companies that have poor development management and buggy software, but clearly it’s a perception that does not come from being familiar with IBM.

If even half of what you’ve implied about internal problems at LL are true, IBM, Intel, and most other tech giants with the exception of Microsoft, would walk away from Linden Labs without another word. I worked for a company back in the 90s that produced a very successful prouct that both Intel and IBM were interested in acquiring and they both walked away from the table simply because an employee at the company mentioned on a messageboard that they were both in talks with the company regarding the product. IBM and tech corporations in general, don’t play games when it comes to stuff like poor management controls and out of control internal employees.

Further, the very things you’ve suggested LL needs to do are precisely what an IBM or another big corp would want done to be satisfied with LL’s development process. So much so, that the suspicious side of me wonders if your post and the many like it that appear here regularly, are part of an astroturfing campaign by a corp who wants to control the grid. More likely you’re just repeating meme’s you’ve read elsewhere, but still, it’s very odd how persistant and consistant these claims are made by people who by all appearances, aren’t qualified to make them.

Aside from that though, you brought up a really good point about voice masking. I don’t do cross gender roleplay, but I do roleplay characters that my voice would not be an ideal match for, as I’m sure many do. A voice masking system that would allow the use of “patches” to change your voice, would open up a whole new market segment in game, as well as a whole new dimension to the roleplay possible in SL. I don’t know how possible it is, but LL should note that far more people than just cross gender roleplayers would find that functionality very useful and appealing.

Strangest thing is, on both of my other Mac’s (one running 10.4.9, one 10.4.8) second life works just fine. Windows as well. The only REAL difference I an think of as to how they are configured differently is that this one that gets the DNS error is using a PCI network card, instead of a built in adapter.

It figures this is the one I use the most as well :(

  200. 200 Amanda Ascot Says:

@131: Jay, well said, even if I don’t agree with all of it. I think you speak for many SL users, and what I see in your post are *perceptions* of some of the problems behind our problems. Whether or not all that is actually is the case is something probably only LL knows for certain, but you underline the simple fact that Linden Lab is developing a reputation among a great many residents of a company which has a damned the torpedos full speed ahead approach to development.

On the other hand, SL is an incredibly complex system, so it doesn’t surprise me that people experience varying degrees of difficulty, especially with new releases of the client. I have to wonder, though, just how many of the problems we’re having are the fault of the program and how many are the fault of the inability of the hardware to keep up with the load. It could well be that with the current hardware base and software infrastructure it doesn’t matter if the next verious of the client is totally bug-free. We might still be experiencing the same TP failures, rez failures, and all the other problems that I prefer to attribute to the server load before pointing fingers at the software. Of course, we have the very real issue that different machines respond very differently to the client, and that certainly doesn’t help matters.

The flip side to this is that some of the latest viewers *have* demonstrably introduced bugs that make Second Life virtually unusable for many of us. My suggestion is to halt *all* further work on new features, quit tweaking the things that actually *do* function, and concentrate solely upon fixing the things that are broken. I will happily be a beta tester for “Hot-test” versions released with this design concept. Fix one or two things at a time, release a FirstLook so people can test the “fix” under load. If they work, then stop work on those features and fix a couple more things and repeat. When you have eight or ten bugs ironed out, wrap them together into a FirstLook to see if they actually work together. That’s another problem. Sometimes something you change for the better breaks something that already works. That’s the life of a programmer, and in complex systems it can’t be helped.

I think one of the reasons the test grid isn’t uncovering these issues before they get put into the official release client is that many of those problems don’t show up unless the Grid is stressed — which is most of the time, now. If you can’t get enough people to the test grid to put a beta through the grinder then you need to bring the beta to the Main Grid. It’s that simple.

As for voice in the client, that’s not an immediate issue for me because I can’t speak, anyway. Now, if they had a voice synthesis system that allowed me to tweak the parameters to create various voices (yes, I role-play a wide variety of characters), I’d be a lot more excited about this.

@197: Drauxanna, in all probability, the reason you don’t seem to be wearing clothing even though it says you are in your inventory is because the clothing hasn’t downloaded to your viewer, yet. Everything that has to do with what you see takes place locally on your machine — not on the servers. This is why you can appear naked to yourself, but everyone else may well see you fully clothed, or all your attachments might looked like their stuffed in your bum after you teleport, but other people see them where they belong (that happened to me a couple days ago). Sometimes you can just go into the appearance editor and then exit it, and that will clear things up. Sometimes you can rebake your textures and it will get fixed. Sometimes you just have to wait. Rarely, only a relog will do the trick.

It seems that the extended periods of low framerates (see my previous comment above) was caused by VBO being turned on. This wasn’t obvious at first because turning on VBO made the framerate INcrease slightly in the beginning. Since I turned VBO off, my framerates have become stable. The short freezes of the previous viewer have gone completely.

Maybe the 1.14.0.1 viewer is not so bad after all. ;) I guess the majority of crashes reported here were actually triggered by bugs in the system’s display drivers. It’s very important to keep those drivers up to date!

We’re seeing it on 3 wildly different systems, and it’s basicly two of my associates, myself, you, and one other person on the blog who noticed? *sigh* 1.14.0.1 is actually unusable for my hardware spec. I have all the latest drivers and everything is shiny and new (ish)…

great…now how about fixing the bug that is obviously in the division of land…and the level of your customer service

I purchased a parcel today..a 1024 for 12300 lindens and divided it for resale….I split it into two 512 parcels…and then went to put them both up for sale for 7150 each…I definitely had a green line down the center of my parcel…dividing it into two parcels…I put one up for sale for 7150, and the second that I clicked the confirmation for putting it up for sale…the green line disappeard…the parcels reverted into a single parcel of 1024 again, and a landbot swooped it in half a second A landbot run by Zor Zeddmore, of course both the bot and Zor ignore my request to make things right…so I am out 5150 lindens…and so I called the concierge support, to fix this obvious problem…

I got hold of Guy Linden, and he came to the parcel and did some sort of “examination” while I waited..then told me he could do NOTHING. There is obviously an undocumented bug in the system…I am hardly in the habit of buying land and selling it for much less than I buy it for…and I sure saw the green line on the parcel.

So…basically, the lindens are supporting the “right” of the landbots to rip us off, because of a bug in THEIR systems????…I want everyone to know…buy land at your own risk in this game…you have a better chance keeping your money if you just flush it…

seems to me this is an old bug resurfacing, from a ways back . I had the same thing happen to me a year ago. At that time I was lucky enough to have a friend who was a member of the former Live Help team. He intimidated the Jerk that ripped me off enough to return the land to me.
Here is a work around. When selling your land put the initial price at 99999999 or as many 9’s as you can, this prevents these bastards from land swooping and ripping you off. once you are satisfied that everything is kool, you can reset the price to the correct figure.

I’ve been inundated with complaints from previous (and once-satisfied!) customers and clients that my stuff has broken. It would be nice if LL at least acknowledged that particles are now (temporarily?!!) screwed so I can say with authority that it’s not “my fault.” I’ve submitted two bug reports on this – one for 1.14.0 (0) and one for 1.14.0 (1) – both with code examples. I’ve found something interesting in these clients. If I completely uninstall the old version and install a clean version with the default settings they tend to work fine. If I go into Preferences and change the Graphics settings, like turning on local lighting or VBO then I start to “ball-up” and crash every few minutes. If I change the settings back to the defaults the crashes still continue. I’ve manually deleted my cache folder and settings folder and still was crashing every few minutes.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the same version and the problems have gone away.

It almost seems like some preference setting is being set and not being unset unless the client is completely uninstalled despite what is selected in the Preferences window. Someone on the development team may want to look into that.

Hiya all, just thought all of you residents paying good real dollars to play this farce of a game would like to know how you can expect to be treated by the Linden clan should they cause something to happen that robbed you of your land, finances or Inventory.
In Dec of last year Lindens did another of their famous upgrades, and as a result my partner Victoria Jacques lost nearly her entire inventory ..a folder that contained 27 months of purchases..everything she owned except her clothes and what we had on the ground.
Vic reported this loss straight away and received the customary Linden customer service response..deathly silence.
Over the past 4 months she has chased and chased them to find her lost inventory (i must add at this point that Lindens accepted it was a problem glitch caused by them)
Finally in frustration, and many broken promises of “we will investigate and get back to you” Vic rang Michael Linden in person..giving him full details of times dates and people spoken to.
Once again..the customary reponse..”will get back to you”..which of course he never did.
Finally i spoke with Robin Linden on Vics behalf, and i must commend her for at least getting back to me and finally getting something to happen.
Vic received a note from Michael Linden appologising for all the problems caused, and for her losing her inventory, and sent her a most generous compensation of 3000L..YES FOLKS,THATS RIGHT 3000L FOR THE LOSS OF 27 MONTHS OF INVENTORY.
Vic rang Michael and asked for an explanation of how he arrived at that value..his reply was that is the maximum Lindens will pay as reimbursment for any loss caused by them, and infact are under no obligation to pay anything.
He then went on to imply that Vic could be trying to “defraud” poor old Lindens by exagerating the extent of her losses, and if not could have purchased all those items and “given them away”..he then clutched at another straw and said because she had taken 3 months to report it she could be trying to take advantage of them.
Heyyy Michael..if you ever read these bloggs, and i doubt you care enough to do so..Never at any stage has Vic asked you or anyone else for financial compensation..she just wants her inventory back that was lost by negligence and incompetence on behalf of Lindens.
I sent back the 3000L .and was most pleased to see that Lindens kept it and gave me the curtesy of ..yes folks you guessed it..NO REPLY.
Please use the 3000L to put a down payment on a concience, and apart from Robin Linden perhaps you could use it for learning some people skills or a dictionary explaining the meaning of customer service.
The way Victoria has been treated is shameful,i just hope that noone else ever has to be confronted with Lindens arrogance, indifference, negligence and refusal to accept any responsibilty for their incompetance.
No wonder fully paid up members only account for 15% of the worlds population, there will be even less when my next subs are due.

LordKushiel Chatnoir, do you really need to spam this blog with that story? So okay, you’ve told it once already in one topic. Do you really have to post it in every post here?
Get a life! First, second… Doesn’t matter, just get one…

I’ve just finished reading over this complete post top to bottum, to see if anyone else is having the same issues and not suprisingly the answer is yes. I started recieving the missing gestures messege at log on at about the same time I noticed about 1800 items where also missing from my inventory (left the folders so I know what i’m missing, thanks :/). I’m guessing that this is common if you consider the small number of people that this is happening to that are mentioning it here proportionally to the grid numbers. The thing I noticed and failed to catch in the other entries was it occurred after I installed the optional 1.14.0.01. I’ve did the bug report and have got the generic replies but from what others are saying about lost inventories (full or partial) I’m not really counting on recouping anything. I was curious has anyone had any success with working this out with LL or with the suggestion @51 made.

I´m having thousands of the crashes since i had installed version 1.14. I loved version 1.13. Some minutos in program and its chash my OS (XP Professional) and i need restart system.

1.14.0.1 is the absolute worst release I’ve experienced.. Pure shit

  231. 231 Roxas Nishi Says:

for not helping me be able to play again i will no longer use your game because apparently you dont care enough to help us when we need it

  232. 232 Roxas Nishi Says:

id like to see you go back to the old version of SL because its better than this crap that doesnt let most of us play

  233. 233 Arianna Oranos Says:

I downloaded 1.14.0.1, installed it and had to revert to 1.13.2 because of textures rezzing all over the place and a general slowness that made even the most trivial task a tedious and tiresome experience. I read in the other post (the one about issues with the optional update) that I needed OpenGL 2.0.

Problem is that my computer’s manufacturer (it’s an Acer Aspire 1670 notebook with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700) has NOT released new drivers with the newer version of OpenGL and seems quite unlikely to do so. And, to make matters worse, I cannot use ATI’s own Catalyst driver package. And now I read about inventory issues and whatnot…

Sorry, but 1.14 will need to go back to the drawing board, because it’s causing nothing but problems – not to mention the OpenGL issue I wrote about above.

Never get to try new release 1.14.0.0/1 !!!!!! – PC crashes every time I try – 1.14 wont accept grafic card ATI mobile radeon X700 (My laptopPC meets all System Requirements except grafic!!!)
I am back to 1.13.3.2 ….. It works at least – time to time 1.13. crashes – yes, but I can still have some nice and fun hours in SL ..
If 1.14 is that good, you better make it work on my laptop too ….

  235. 235 Heaven Sands Says:

i keep having the blue screen on my DELL laptop so im downgrading the download again

SL needs to be fix so then it can be played on any laptop or PC

  236. 236 Sokrati Says:

Heya… How i can download the Version 1.13 again?

  237. 237 Jonn Says:

Wow, it’s good to know it wasn’t just me. Every time I fired SL up and walked around for a few minutes the whole computer crashed (corrupted my boot record, which I fixed).

I thought it was a video card issue, but the other MMORPG games I played worked fine (and those graphics are much more complex). I even dumbed down my display in hopes it would fix it.

I’ve reinstalled several times with no luck.

I’m going to install the previous version someone linked to and hope for the best.

  238. 238 Jonn Says:

Ahh, uninstalled and installed the eailer version mentioned above and works great. Good luck to everyone else.

I posted just a short while ago in technical ” Was working – now dead” not realising so many folks have problems ive read here. If you read the post you see that sl 14.01 was running on a basic 1.4 athlon PC with a 64MB MX 400 card.. so basic i doubted that i could get sl at all. It ran.. but once i upgraded the graphics card to a 7800 geforce 256 card.. sl no longer runs.
So.. one has to ask.. if sl will run on a very basic system.. what goes wrong when its upgraded? the systems cant be at fault surely? they are better more capable than ever my old 64MB card could ever hope to touch.. but it ran 14.01.. now it wont.. sl is hanging bait out now.. soon someone will put together something that will take the sl community.. lock stock and barrell.. its just about keeping a stable runnable program.

It just seems absurd that to use sl while my fast pc gets fixed , i should have to downgrade the graphics on my old one..to a 64mb mx 400 card, instead of the 7800 GSOC 256

the 3d ability of sl is the main attraction for me, but its waning.. i should find something more productive to do i think.. sl is becoming hard work… and im paying real money to do it.. i am a sucker.. but for how much longer.. hmmm.
