Second Life 1.12.2(6) now on the Beta Test Grid

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006 at 11:30 AM by: Joshua Linden

It was actually updated yesterday but the dataserver was misconfigured and so some services were misbehaving. That’s been corrected, so come over to the Beta Test Grid and check it out.

Since the last announcement about 1.12.2(5) we’ve only made two changes which have been under testing in-house for quite some time:

For those keeping track, we postponed the release last week when we saw large numbers of the gray/missing image avatar issues on the Beta Test grid while the main grid was down for the deploy. We have subsequently determined that the issues were, in fact, in already present on the main grid but a number of factors caused the frequency of the occurence to be much higher on the preview grid. These include low viewer frame rates due to a busy location, crossing region boundaries, logging in only once, and never having logged into a grid before.

Several developers have been focused on this issue since last week to identify the cause of the problems and the fixes. We have staged the roll-out of the fixes, with the lowest risk changes coming first, which do dramatically reduce the occurence of the bugs, and ensuring that when the bugs occur the bad appearance can be corrected by re-logging rather than becoming permanently stuck. We will be making additional fixes in future releases, hopefully without requiring viewer updates.

Will Linux-only residents be able to help test the Grey Goo detectors?

Llauren: Heh, while I was starting to answer this the Linux preview went up on the web.

Just to reiterate what’s up with Linux: we’ve been building Linux viewers outside of the main release/deployment process for several weeks now. Our developers working on getting the Linux viewers into shape have been pounding away and putting out updates more frequently than the main releases. That said, there are occasional leapfrog moments when we crank out a new preview and Linux has to play catch-up.

The good news is that we’re planning to bring Linux “back into the fold” and start doing building Linux viewers as part of our normal release process. That won’t happen for 1.12.2, but hopefully the next release.

Good to hear. 1.12.2.6 is so far stable. ALSA sound is a mess, but I think that may just be FMOD.

Shhhh Sue, don’t let the secret out! No, but seriously…

Yup, we have 1.12.3(0) live on the Beta grid right now. The reason we didn’t announce it is that we’re coming out with 1.12.3(1) later today which has a few more exciting changes. And we were thinking “folks like Sue will find the preview anyway, but if we expect most residents to take one look at preview, let’s wait until (1)”

So c’mon in and let us know what you find! But promise to come back later!

  6. 6 Sue Baskerville Says:

Joshua Linden promised a new beta version 1.12.3.1 yesterday but it is today now and the version on the download page is still 1.12.3.0, the version I posted about earlier.

This prompts me to ask: How does one go about displaying emoticons for “bitter wailing” and “gnashing of teeth” in these comment fields?

  7. 7 Joshua Linden Says:

Hah, I was wondering how long you’d let me go before calling me on that.

We actually had something close to what we wanted pulled together yesterday, but as we were playing with it we realized it just didn’t feel finished – not due to bugs, but due to there being a very obviously missing feature. So we decided to keep it in-house until we got that into place.

I’m personally working right now on getting everything pulled together for the updated beta, so I want it ready as much as anyone!
