You’ll need to be registered to comment on our blog

Friday, October 6th, 2006 at 1:49 PM by: Torley

[UPDATE - Oct. 6 @ 4:49 PM PDT] We’re aware certain email address domains, like @hotmail.com and @msn.com, don’t work for signing up. As the message says:

You cannot use that email address to signup. We are having problems with them blocking some of our email. Please use another email provider.

Unfortunately this is not something we have control over. I haven’t tested this, but try: signup using a different email address, and then login. Then, from the toolbar on top, My Account > Edit Profile and change your email. Please comment if this works for you.

[UPDATE - Oct. 6 @ 3:50 PM PDT] As noted in the comments, you should choose the “Gimme a blog!”option when signing up if you want to change your profile. Whether you use it or not is up to you. Thanx Frans and Matt!

Hiya, it’s me again. :) I’m soooo happy we’re in our new home @ WordPress VIP. Hopefully, the most excellent question of: “THE BLOG DOESN’T LOAD WHEN SL IS HAVING PROBLEMS! WHY!??” will be but a fading nightmare.

Massive thanxies to Jeff, Mark, and all Lindens who helped us transition, and I salute Matt Mullenweg, who’s a genius of personal publishing.

Like the title says, you’ll need to be registered to comment on our blog.

Why? It’s simple:

  • Adds an extra edge to spam filtering. Akismet works great, but every bit helps us make a smoother moderation process.
  • You get a personal profile as part of a larger community, including our Official Linden Blog and extending far beyond.
  • A popular feature suggestion we’ve gotten is to be able to track discussions you’ve participated in. Guess what? You can do that from the My Comments page after logging in!
  • And, optionally included with your registration, you can get your own free blog @ WordPress.com. Blog about Second Life or whatever you want. This naturally answers: “I want a blog too! Where do I start?” This isn’t limited to Second Life Residents only, so if you haven’t joined our world yet and are curious, feel free.

You only have to do it once — get your own WordPress.com account in seconds!

P.S. I know the signup link isn’t the most obvious and doesn’t show up on the login page; we’ll find ways to make it more visible.

Cool Torley hopefully no more blog downtime! =)

One thing i noticed when signing up is that if you choose the no blog option, you won’t be able to change your password or your nickname. I had to create a blog to be able to acces those pages. just a FYI for the people signing up.

  2. 2 jilliancallahan Says:

Would have been nice to have some way of reserving our SL names… alas.

  3. 3 Jillian Callahan Says:

Too bad there isn’t/wasn’t a way to reserver our SL names, alas.

  4. 4 wandarich Says:

Woohoo I already have an account here :)
But only because I wanted to use the akismet on my own site or i wouldn’t have bothered I think:p

I prefer to rss the LL blog into a sidebar on my own site – then i dont have to keep visiting here for info.

  5. 5 Dani2.0 Says:

I am glad that you like it here Torley. I have migrated to wordpress myself and I love it!

  6. 6 dolmeretalamasca Says:

    Thanks for the info, Torley.

  7. 7 Matt Says:

    Thanks for the kind words!

Frans, good point. We’re fixing that soon.

  8. 8 Torley Linden Says:

Oh GREAT REGISTERED COMMENTS! Glad to see it’s working. :D

@Frans: Thx, I haven’t checked that out personally, but sounds like it’s a better idea to go with the blog option and just not use it. (Until you wanna, you have the possibility open to you!)

@Jillian: Yeah, I would someday like one’s SL identity to be portable all over the Internets. In the meantime, have you seen http://www.onxiam.com/ ?

@Wanda: Kewl! Hehe, that’s a great idea, where’s your blog?

@Dani2.0: w00t! Learning WordPress has been quite an adventure.

    @Dolmere: Yer welcome!

  9. 9 Torley Linden Says:

    OMG MATT IS HERE!!!

  10. 10 zenethian Says:

Perhaps the LindenLabs login system could provide an OpenID server that we could use as a universal login for any system that uses it? I know OpenID support is coming soon to WordPress, and sites like LiveJournal use it already.

  11. 11 SignpostMarv Says:

    @Jillian
    @Torley

Got something hidden up my sleeve to fix that ;-)

  12. 12 SignpostMarv Says:

    @Torley

OnXiam doen’t to account verification, so someone can steal your name.

This sneaky sneaky project I’m working does exactly what you describe Torley, and nobody can pinch your SL name :-D

  13. 13 SignpostMarv Says:

    @Torley
    @Matt

Linking to internal wp-admin pages does not forward the user to the relevant wp-admin page.

    Only their wp-admin directory.

  14. 14 Torley Linden Says:

@zenethian: That’s a great idea, and we’ve definitely got some plans in the pipeline — this sort of cross-site identity transport is just going to become more and more relevant, *especially* as a way to verify “I am Resident [YOUR NAME HERE] in Second Life” with confidence when logging into Resident-run sites of all kinds.

  15. 15 prokofy Says:

Hi, it’s a shame to lose all those Linden names that used to be along the right-hand column because otherwise it’s impossible to find stuff.

  16. 16 Torley Linden Says:

@Prokofy: Yes, that was made possible due to a plugin we added — we don’t have those currently running, and are going to investigate our options for bringing them back. :)

  17. 17 Baba Says:

Hawt stuff! ? Ok whatever ;0

  18. 18 SignpostMarv Says:

    coughthatswhatthesneakysneakyprojectiscough

WordPress itself supports OpenID through the OpenID plugin. Still needs a bit of tweaking IMHO though.

  19. 19 Jesse Malthus Says:

This is pretty cool, I like not having to type my info in anymore, and now noone can steal my name :D
As for OpenID, I don’t think WordPress.COM supports it >.

  20. 20 SignpostMarv Says:

Ah yes, but with a little bit of tweaking to, Linden Lab can install the plugin, thanks to being in the VIP program.

  21. 21 suezannecbaskerville Says:

I can now add to my collection of totally unimpressive websites a WordPress blog.

I note this appeared to appear as the fastest growing WordPress blog.

  22. 22 Ceera Murakami Says:

Well! It FINALLY allowed me to comment! Your blog refuses to believe that I am logged in to WordPress on my Win XP / IE6 system. I can access my blog on teh WordPress site just fine, but can’t comment on yours. I had to switch to my Mac and Safari to post this.

This will probably be the only comment I will make here. I think this sign-up system is going to lead to rampant impersonation. I did NOT want and I will NOT use the Blog that I was forced to create just to get the privilege of posting here. Good bye Torley. If I need help, I’ll e-mail you directly.

  23. 23 Jim Lumiere Says:

Im not a happy camper about this. Glad you got a stable blog environment, since you insist on this approach to communciation with your community. But Im not happy I had to register with yet someone else, yet another user name and password to remember; more dedicated web space that like as not will go idle.

And the continuing implication that you want obstacles to communication, not a clear and easy to use channel.

*just shakes head and walks away, muttering about short-sighted corporate decisions*

*Turns* … Oh, btw .. now that I /have/ the privilege of commenting here … Im pretty sure I wont be using it. Why bother.

*Turns again, heading off to talk to someone who wants to listen …*

  24. 24 wrestlinghulka Says:

How is this blog now clear… how is this blog not easy?

  25. 25 Sator Canetti Says:

I’m glad that Linden Labs has a stable, offsite location for the blog now. It allows for issues within Linden Labs or it’s colocation facility to not affect what has become it’s main method of communicating its desires and informing the public.

    Good Job, LL.

  26. 26 Torley Linden Says:

@Ceera: Awww, sorry to hear of the hard time. I thought you wanted a better comment-tracking system too, which is why I posted about My Comments.

Additionally, I haven’t forgotten about your request to show post titles only, and the ability to expand them as you wish. I hope to write something about that next week.

@Jim: I sure heard what you said. :)

  27. 27 Torley Linden Says:

@Wrestling: Nice start on your blog! I just clicked on your name, there it is.

@Sator: Thanx! Hopefully this will still allow us to communicate if meteors come raining down. ;)

  28. 28 luciftias Says:

    Thanks. Easy. Quick. Clean.

Nice to have this handled by a dedicated team.

  29. 29 SignpostMarv Says:

@Ceera: The signup system will create no-more rampant impersonation than would’ve occured if LL left the blog where it was.

  30. 30 Clubside Granville Says:

For people having a problem with their registrations, as in not seeing the “Reply” box depite being logged in, I was able to solve the problem by going to http://wordpress.com and logging out. When clicking on the “You must be logged in” link I entered my information but DID NOT click “Remember Me” which then finally allowed me to post a reply. I created two different WordPress accounts to test the functionality and this was the only procedure (even after closing all of my browsers) that let me access the “Reply” feature.

  31. 31 dametneumann Says:

yep that was what worked also you can change to haotmail addy after you setup account wiht another account i used a disposable yahoo addy i had that i dont use :) then changed it to my hotmail addy that i use all the time

  32. 32 musicteacher_rampal Says:

HOLY CRAP, I CAN COMMENT!! I don’t know what I did, or how I finally did this but somehow I got out of the “you must log in to post comments” loop. What a pain in the butt! I think it had something to do with me enabling ALL cookies…not my preference in cookie settings…I shouldn’t have to open my computer up to ALL cookies just to post comments here.

    1. you need to find a way to allow msn and hotmail accounts to create accounts. work it out with word press if you need to but you need to do this. Who cares if the e-mails get blocked once in a while. People should not have to sign up for another e-mail account just to post here. YOU want us to use the blog so YOU need to get this worked out. I got around the problem by e-mailing support at word press and they created my account for me.

    2. People shouldn’t HAVE to create a blog they don’t want and won’t use just to comment here. Again, YOU want us to use this blog, so you need to get this bug fixed.

    3. I hope this change allows for the results you seek as far as blog accessability during a grid crisis because this was a MAJOR pain just to get through the sign up process….took me over 2 hours (1 hour with several hours offline in between the 2nd hour) to figure this out and both SL support and word press support were usless except for wordpress helping me set up my account.

    4. I reiterate…you need to work out a way for people to use their hotmail, msn, yahoo…etc. accounts to sign up. I have one other account but it is my work account and I am legally bound by a contract not to use that e-mail address to sign up for blogs, messageboards, internet updates, etc…

    5. Just suggestion but perhaps it might have been a good idea to have someone watching and answering in “linden answers” on the forums for us poor people who couldn’t figure out how to comment and were desperately looking for help on the forums. I had to resort to e-mailing word-press support and e-mailing Torley. (thanks Torley for trying to help, didn’t work but at least you tried)

Please fix the cookie thing if you can because I really want to go back to restricting certain cookies for obvious reasons.

    *sigh* whew….

  33. 33 Soleil Says:

    yay wordpress. :D :D :D

  34. 34 suezannecbaskerville Says:

I see the “grid is gods only” post in the L-blog, but I don’t see it when I use the Opera built-in RSS reader.

Is that atttributable to the “feed lag”, that blog posts take a while to enter the RSS system, or is this a common characteristic of RSS readers, or is it Opera’s fault, or what?

Do any of the RSS readers show the Linden post and the comments in a logical manner, with the comments appearing with the posts they are responses to?

  35. 35 musicteacher_rampal Says:

Do all posts here now go through moderation like the old one? Is there supposed to be some type of indication if your post is awaiting moderation? What time frame can one expect to see their post if it passes moderation? Just trying to figure out what happened to my post from over an hour ago since I’ve seen 2 pop up in the time since I posted it.

  36. 36 cocoanutkoala Says:

Who is Matt. Why are you so excited that he is here. Or are we not supposed to know. Or is it that if we have to ask then it’s not for us to know. Which is why I’ve left off the question marks.

Who is SignPost Marv. What do these people have to do with this change.

I immediately registered here so as to be the person who gets my name. I guess you don’t care what name people use to post here?

I don’t know why the person above said that now he didn’t have to type his name in as he did on the old blog, because I never had to type my name in on the old blog; it put my name in for me each time.

I was able to register here because I didn’t trust the “remember me” thing in the first place, so I didn’t get hung up on it.

I was able to change my password only because I took the time to CREATE A BLOG I WILL NEVER USE. It takes a while just to find the part that tells you you can’t change your password till you do that, then recommends to you that whatever password YOU choose will be crappy anyway.

All these hoops to jump through are certainly a good way to put more even distance between the Lindens and the residents.

I’m glad you no longer have it on the same dealie so that it goes down when the game does, but couldn’t you have just purchased another machine for that?

As far as I can tell, the main problem here will be the number of imposters and anonymous posters. I guess that doesn’t matter to you?

Anyway, anyone interested in not being impersonated should claim their name (or at least one version of their name – people can still do nasty parodies) now.

  37. 37 Sator Canetti Says:

I do have a question? Does Linden Labs plan to support any of the avatar features for comments?

  38. 38 crestenpixie Says:

sign up was a breeze, not sure I’ll use the blog i signed up for, but at least I can post comments. Looks like a good system so far! :)

  39. 39 luciftias Says:

    A dumb question: who’s “Matt”?

  40. 40 whipster Says:

    This looks much better!

  41. 41 lewisnerd Says:

Please explain how this an “improvement” on an already bad decision.

It’s no secret I hate this blog. In fact, I hate blogs period. Blogs are not two-way communication, its a diary that tells other people with no lives about your lack of a life, and they serve no purpose. I have spent HOURS trying to figure out how to get logged in to post – and it’s only by reading Clubside’s post above I found out that by NOT clicking the obvious “remember me” box can you get it to work.

You’re paying these guys $250 a month for this? When you were offered a better, managed, reliable, reputable, established third party forum that would have relieved all your problems – for free.

Clubside’s information should be made sticky in the forums, on the blog, and message of the day – once again a resident finds a solution to a problem of YOUR making.

I thought that things couldn’t get any worse in the “user > Linden Lab communication stakes”. Congratulations guys, you proved me wrong.

If part of your thinking in this was making things harder for residents to express their feelings, then I’m afraid you failed in this particular case, because this only makes me more determined to stick here and ask those questions you really don’t want to hear.

    Lewis

  42. 42 lewisnerd Says:

I also note that posts don’t appear instantly, and there is not even an indication of the fact they are ‘held for moderation’ – even though, of course, as we are all adults and LL takes a hands-off approach, moderation is not required. I’ve never seen a viagra advert once in the ‘open posting’ stage.

    Lewis

  43. 43 Baba Says:

The blog is using feedburner which has a 30 min ping time. You will only see updates to the feed every 30 min.

  44. 44 tkimball Says:

@ Torley – You know I’m not normally disappointed about changes, but this one could have waited on other means. For those of us who have their own sites and don’t want another, the account support for those not wanting a local weblog is *extremely* lacking. See my comments to Matt…

@ Matt – As an existing (and very happy!) WordPress user on my own domain, I don’t see the point in having another one here; In particular because with mine I can tinker with it via a shell account. I’ve never used Akismet (I use Bad Behavior and auto-close comments), so this is the first time an account was created. It would be nice to (at minimum) be able to have the ability to link an outside WP weblog, and/or have the regular user’s profile available for their own edit. I can’t even change the auto-generated password, which is just replacing one security risk with another.

I really don’t want to resort to creating detailed responses via trackback/pingback. That’s not my style, and I also don’t want to clutter the MystBlogs aggregate either. :-)

Hm, I’m not a big fan of comment moderation, but since I allready have a wordpress.com account and use that, I can’t complain too loudly ;) – but hey, if you use the registered wordpress.com users, how about showing their avatar pictures, too? ;)

  46. 46 wandarich Says:

for some reason i cant add any info to my profile here – there just seem to be no options to put a web address etc. anyroads my blod is here as per torleys request: http://www.electricvenus.com

  47. 47 Clubside Granville Says:

Wanda, your solution is taking the blog service you probbly didn’t want. Go to http://wordpress.com and make sure you are logged in. Either at the top of the screen on a blue bar or in the center of the screen you shouldsee “Claim your blog” or something similarly worded. After activating that blog you can edit your profile, where you can give yourself a nickname (such as “Wanda Rich”) and set that as your preferred name (you have to edit your profile a second time to get the wording to appear in the drop-down properly), and you can also change your website (which will default to http://wandarich.wordpress.com). After making these two changes your name should appear properly with a link to your preferred website.

  48. 48 dametneumann Says:

well not real happy about this log I have made several comments yet they dont show up so im not sure this is the best solution if lindens actually want feedback from the masses however if they just want a place to post stuff a static webpage would be just as good

    Marvellous. It even works.

  54. 54 Karl Says:

Fortunately I already had a wordpress.com account (I set it up a while back, so I could get Akismet for a “real” wordpress blog on my own domain). However, had I not had this account already, I doubt that I’d have gone to the trouble of registering here as well. From readng several of the independent forums I’m in, I’ve seen a lot of complaints, mainly focussed on three issues. 1) Users are not able to register for whatever reason, or they register and it just doesn’t work. Thus yet again, LL have set another obstacle in the way of its users to contact them. 2) Users are not able to claim and verify their own SL names so therefore identity-fraud will be a problem. Any fool will be able to get a wordpress com account, give themselves a Linden name, or the name of a prominent SL user, and because the blog and the registering are handled by a third party, LL will have no control of this. 3) Why is a company that hosts an entire virtual world, unable to host a blog? Hell, even *I* can host a blog.

    ~~Karl Herber

  55. 55 ninjafoong Says:

Can someone explain why a company such as LL (mostly made from web devs) is unable to run and host its own blog? Is it really beyond their abilities to pony up for a dedicated server with another provider and actually get the software installed correctly? I mean come on, its not rocket science.

Oh well, might as well join the masses, wooo, yeah, woooo, a blog that wont fall over or lag the grid or get shot in the foot when you least expect it (like a wednesday), wooo, another company with my email address, yaaaaay, another password to remember that i cant change…….

  56. 56 brenda1archer Says:

OMIGOD I finally am able to post. Only after making sure to log out of my other WordPress blog, which I had just created for my Yahoo! Web Hosting account, and creating a new user ID just to post here. This site would not let me use my pre-existing WordPress ID. It would not let me create a second, new user without also creating a blog that I don’t need, since I just made one already. I had to fiddle with my cookie settings. I had to also make dead sure I was logged off both WordPress accounts before logging in again here. Gods. I have been struggling with this thing for an hour, counting time spent over on the forums looking for answers. And it’s not as if I’m a nontechnical kind of person, but I am pretty much new to blogging.

Everyone does NOT have a blog, it’s the fashion of the hour. I still mainly use a website, email and forums to communicate – old school, easily used on multiple platforms.

Lindens, it’s not enough to answer all the posts of “I can’t do this” with “you HAVE to do this.” I do tech support for ecommerce stores, and if I answered questions that way I’d be fired. If you don’t know the answer, give us the URL for someone who does. But hosing us off generates the very negativity you say you dislike.

I don’t like having to make an angry post, I understand all too well that many users make no effort to problem solve before they start screaming. But it costs you nothing to show a little more empathy – to acknowledge when users have problems or an information gap – and tone does matter in customer support.

The other reason I’m posting is authentication – so that you may know that brenda1archer, virtualheresy.com, and SL resident Brenda Archer are all one and the same; if anyone wants to extra verify this please IM me in world. No other version of my username on the SL blog will be me unless I announce it at my website. in the official LL forums or in world. I apologize for the self-absorption, but I want to be cautious when the WordPress IDs are unverified. Thanks.

  57. 57 musicteacher_rampal Says:

Well at least my posts are now showing up….only took a whole day.

Is there anyway to get rid of the blog I had to create in order to post and still be able to change my own password?

In the forums, Robin stated several times that the lack of being able to verify that someone on the blog is who they are in SL is a worrisome problem…why wasn’t this looked into before switching? Why was there some type of announcement before switching, that you’d be switching to wordpress so that people familiar with it could give feedback about it? Why was the change made on a Friday so that getting help from LL would be nearly impossible?

Robin also stated that first posts by any user have to be cleared…could that information be posted on the blog so people know why their posts aren’t showing up?

Why are you paying wordpress to use their service when they won’t let you allow the e-mail providers that your members use? (ie.msn, hotmail, yahoo…etc)

Is LL going to guarantee that we will not get spammed by wordpress, have our e-mails sold to other parties by word-press, etc? I know my info is secure with LL, but I don’t know wordpress and don’t want any more spam.

There are many issues that LL should have looked into before switching and work out a better agreement with wordpress before using their service.

and please in the future, plan big, possibly problematic changes for Monday’s so that people can get help and not have to wait for Monday.

  58. 58 Lewis Nerd Says:

Looks like the queue is starting to unblock now. That makes it slightly less bad.

Moving to WordPress was a poor business decision, and a poor decision for the community.

Have you ever considered that, just because a few Linden Lab employees happen to think blogs are the best thing since sliced bread, you cannot force your opinions on us no matter how hard you try?

Which part of “Many of us hate blogs” and “Blogs are in no way even close to replacing the forum” are you having difficulty understanding? From reading the employment page, degree level qualifications are required for all positions (which is silly but for another thread), so all round as a company there is a lot of collective intelligence – yet you are failing to grasp a very simple concept.

  59. 59 stormthunders Says:

I tried commenting earlier and it obviously didn’t work… I like the blog format (one place to find the information) but having to make yet another account somewhere was a turn-off. If there’d been some way to link SL accounts to a wordpress account “Joe Bob of SL” that would have been nice.
