Friday, September 22nd, 2006 at 8:04 PM by: Torley

Hello, we’ll be updating to Second Life 1.12.2 on Wednesday, September 27th, 2006, from 7:00 AM PDT/SLT to 12:00 PM PDT/SLT. The grid will be closed during this time and you’ll need to upgrade to the newest version to login afterwards.

This version contains a number of under-the-hood changes to improve the security of the Second Life world. In addition to this, the Release Notes (EDIT: tentative, final ones will be up soon) are:

Release Notes for Second Life 1.12.2(0) September 22, 2006
=====================================

Bug fixes:
* Offline friendship message no longer says “(resident) has to be your friend…”

This follows the numerous improvements found in Sept. 22’s optional update to 1.12.1.11.

Also, a friendly reminder that our planned downtime for mandatory releases continues to be every two weeks on a Wednesday during the same time window. This means the next scheduled downtime is targeted for Oct. 11. We’ll communicate any new info on our Official Linden Blog (you’re in the right place!).

Thank you graciously for your continued patience and understanding as we endeavor to better the Second Life experience for all!

  1. 1 musicteacher Rampal Says:

that’s it?? a whole new version for one bug fix? What will it say?

  2. 2 WhiteFire Sondergaard Says:

Is this going to go up on the beta grid? I don’t see anything on the preview page at all about 1.12.2?

  3. 3 Chronic Skronski Says:

“(resident) has to be your friend…

This makes me chuckle. (resident) just simply HAS to be your friend! ;)

  4. 4 Thom Frye Says:

My guess is that, being largely a security update, the full changelog is not something they want to be publicizing while we’re still running 1.12.1.

  5. 5 Chr0nic Mackay Says:

well this also fix the copy from opbjects into your invtory ?? as on the blog last week they put work arounds and said that it would be fix in the next update ?
    thx for reading this
    rico

  6. 6 SuezanneC Baskerville Says:

There seems to be a problem with newly created folders going astray that ight should be looked at before the new release.

When will this be available on the beta grid?

  7. 7 thanks Biblio Says:

“”* Next button appears for Search -> Events when there are over 200 events”"

This is a GREAT enhancement, and long-awaited… terrific work, Linden programmers!

(p.s. … now if you can add that to the currently limited to 100 name search?) … ;)

  8. 8 Raymond Figtree Says:

    “Under-the-hood”? Which hood? Amsterdam?

  9. 9 FlipperPA Peregrine Says:

Didn’t the recent viewer already fix the copy objects in inventory problem, or am I missing something? Also, please read the paragraph above the release notes Musicteacher; “This version contains a number of under-the-hood changes to improve the security of the Second Life world. In addition to this, the Release Notes are”…

    Regards,

    -Flip

  10. 10 Johnny Ming Says:

LL – Great job on the optional update that came out this week. Frame rates are up and my viewer crashes are much, much less infrequent. Only problem I’ve noticed is I’m getting a few offline messages when I am online. Best of luck on this upcoming week’s update.

  11. 11 Aleister Leonov Says:

Am I the only one who has a very painful time texturing anything?

The whole texture interface is almost useless and the last update now forces ALL texture folders open on initial opening of the browser….

I can’t say this looks good for the next few weeks..

  12. 12 Julia Says:

Will this upcoming patch/viewer be updated to address the bugs introduced in the last update? I don’t see any mention of them here, but I’m assuming this was put together before anyone knew about the current problems. Some of the new bugs are pretty severe for vendors/builders, and it would suck to have to wait until Oct. 11th to see fixes. :)

  13. 13 Aleister Leonov Says:

Ok… take that back…. Planar is fixed… oops…. teach me to mouth off before I’d actually tried it again… however the folder issue in the texture picker is still a pain.

Sorry Lindens…. Say after me…. Aleister must try before complaining… Aleister must try before complaining…

  14. 14 Joe Linden Says:

SuezanneC: The beta version of 1.12.2 is now up for general access. The problem you mention regarding inventory folders is a known issue, but not corrected in the currently posted viewer. We hope to have a fix for this on Monday. The problem lies in how the inventory window is refreshed after a change to a folder name, or when creating a new one. Closing and reopening the inventory window, or changing the sort order will correctly redraw those folders (as a temporary workaround.)

  15. 15 Arthur Fermi Says:

Will this fix the more than annoying habbit that all folders are open when you browse for a texture, and that every time a note card or picture is put in your inventory it will opens up? Cause it sucks, and slows things down a great deal!

  16. 16 Jesse Barnett Says:

    Torley,

Please remove my comment. The questions I had concerning SIVA were answered by Milo Linden. He went to a lot of time and trouble to give such a detailed response.

    TY

  17. 17 Maddox DuPont Says:

I also believe that issues with an inventory are far more pressing to address. I am new to SL and find that with each update there is another thing that I have till then taken for granted that has dissapeared and no longer works in the same way.

    Examples: (as per above)
-you can not create empty folder, it vanishes
-textures if unpacked open all at ones on the screen and tedious work is to close them – no, logging out does not solve the problem – thanks live help
-purchased items when unpacking do not copy to the inventory – they have to be individually dragged and only one at the time

If people are to invest in the running their business in SL or owning the land etc. this issues need to be addressed first as the system is unreliable and wastes a hell of lot of precious time. We do have RL you know, our time in SL needs to be made as simple and as efficient as possible.

    thanks for you time.

  18. 18 Niamh Flanders Says:

Will this fix the inability to see group IMs? I have to relog 5 or 6 times to get them to work every day. It’s EXTREMELY annoying.

  19. 19 Nexus b Says:

when i upgraded to ver. 1,12,1 the touch – funktion stop work, wy?

  20. 20 Torley Linden Says:

    @Jesse, earlier comment removed.

@Maddox, we know about the “empty folder” prob–see Joe Linden’s earlier comment. Also, “Folders are expanded in texture picker” is definitely annoying and also a known issue. I’ve also experienced “Copy to Inventory/Copy and Wear” buttons being broken before too. Another known issue.

Furthermore, more known issues–and their subsequent fixes–to be announced here soon as usual. Your comments are being read and I’ll be making more posts this week with status updates. If you found a new bug, *please* report it inworld using Help menu > Report Bug, and don’t use the blog to report bugs because they’ll likely get lost; it’s not the right place.

    has some nice tips.

    Thanx!

  21. 21 Musicteacher Rampal Says:

I ask again, are the above release notes correct? Is there truly only one bug fix for this update? If so please consider putting off the update until you get more bugs fixed especially annoying ones like the copy inventory one.

  22. 22 Camelek Says:

When will be new version for Linux?

  23. 23 Koz Farina Says:

I suggest adding a Profile link to the Add friend ‘offer’ when one arrives. Especially as the person can now be ‘afar’ and you have to search for them, if you want to find out who your new friend/fan/stranger/stalker is ;)

  24. 24 Joshua Linden Says:

    Musicteacher Rampal:

No, those release notes aren’t complete yet!

We usually spent quite some time going through all of the changes to make sure they’re listed appropriately in the release notes – and even then, some things slip through the cracks. The short list (understatement!) above has three simple explanations:

    1. We weren’t done with the release note process since we decided to get the preview up; we felt that getting as much feedback as possible was more important than having final release notes ready for the preview.
    2. A lot of the changes in this the next planned release are behind the scenes, and include changes to viewer/server communication protocols to tighten up security and address bugs, rather than visible features. Those are the sorts of changes that require downtime – when we need to rev the servers and the viewer at the same time. These are also more challenging to document (so see point #1 above).
    3. With the Presence update on Wednesday morning, the Rolling Update on Thursday, and the Optional Viewers posted on Friday we actually made a lot of the changes planned for the next release live sooner than we had originally expected. (Good in the case of getting features out… bad when there were bugs. Yes, ouch.) So what had actually been a fairly long list of documented changes got whittled down to… one item.

The list will flesh out before 1.12.2 goes out, never fear.

  25. 25 Meghan Eldrich Says:

I can just see come this Wednesday.. It will be like Medieval England during the black death, and we’ll have Torley (or someone!) crying “Bring Out Your Dead!”. Please I’d love to see this one go smoothly. K? Thanks!

  26. 26 Bonny Bunyip Says:

Lots of problems seem to have been introduced with each update, and the INVENTORY remains a constant source of annoyance. Folders all open when accessing anything, drag and drop loses focus, gaps open up when deleting anything, refresh often fails, the whole inventory is painfully SLOW and unweildy and makes SL slow to a crawl.

But recently, anything on SL has been a crawl. Textures takes minutes to rezz instead of seconds, and buying anything is a nightmare because you can’t see what you are getting unless you have half an hour to spare.

Building has become fraught with problems, too. Crazy things are happening! For example, re-sizing causes linked objects to go into overdrive on their own as if they are having a fit, and establishing precise parameters for prims seems near impossible due to the unwanted addition or subtraction (rounding up??) of mathematical units. Some linked items will not resize at ALL, while others resize at both edges even if you tell them not to. It’s like a lottery, and ending up with what you need is more by luck than judgement.

Am I the only one who can no longer “copy to inventory” and I’m forced to fall back on the old manual method of copy to the inventory – plus the buttons for that menu are detached from the menu box entirely. “Copy and wear” NEVER worked for me anyway!

I love SL, but I am getting to despair over the state of things. Am I alone? Isn’t it time for an enormous rethink, from the ground up? Tinkering with the program is only making it go from bad to worse. The horrendous lag, the missing textures on avatars, the griefing that is getting worse, the influx of newbies that have NO idea how to behave themselves and lack even common courtesy, the building problems, the inventory problems and all else besides….well, to my mind it seems to be heading downhill.

  27. 27 Torley Linden Says:

@Bonny, not just you having “Copy to Inventory” and “Copy to Wear” problems–known bug we want to fix soon. I’ve really liked that feature since the day it was introduced, so I know what an annoying pain it is that it’s broken (and that the buttons don’t move when you resize the dialog window either).

@Meghan, I’ve had more than enough of my share of slowdowns and pixeldeath too! I want it to be more joyous, like angels singing, or at least people don’t have to be afraid the world is gonna end.

I’m going to reword the original post to clarify these are *tentative* Release Notes, as has been the case in previous instances of Release Announcements! :)

  28. 28 Veronique Lalonde Says:

Will this update include a fix to the default positioning of the IM window? I want it in the upper left, away from chat. I can move it there, but it won’t be there the next session.

  29. 29 Torley Linden Says:

@Veronique, not that I know of–yet–but that’s a known issue too, that bugs me like heck! I keep having to move my IM window up like you do.

  30. 30 Cherry Czervik Says:

I lost tons and tons of things selling land the other day. The stuff I had expected to return to inv after a return was not a big deal really but there were also items I picked up which seem to have disspeared too :/

  31. 31 Ai Austin Says:

I also noted the problem with new folders beign created that appear, but disaapear when renamed. It seems they come back about 2 to 3 minutes later! Thats way too long to allow for inventory tidying as after such a long time users may have moved on to do other things assuming its not working at all.

E-mail replies to IM are also still not working. The im mai system at Linden labs reports…

    Mail Delivery System
This is the Postfix program at host data.agni.lindenlab.com.

I’m sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be be delivered to one or more recipients. …

  32. 32 Fulano Giles Says:

Well, i really can live with the other bugs if you guys can get the lag under control. I used to log in from my laptop about 3 months ago – then the Intel Graphics cards were no longer supported and I was cut off until I got my desktop (yeah!) but even though my desktop has more juice it is having real problems keeping up with SL.
