Last Sound System
Tuesday, August 15th, 2006 at 6:39 AM by: babbagelindenI’ve recently fallen in love with last.fm, a web 2.0 app which uploads the names of the tracks you’re listening to in iTunes and uses the information to generate a personalised radio stream based on the music you listen to. It didn’t take long before I started wondering whether I could use last.fm as a robot DJ in Second Life. last.fm publishes a number of web services which Eightbar used to display their last played track in Second Life and streams their radio in MP3 format, but unfortunately doesn’t make the URL of the MP3 streams easily accessible. Luckily, Vadar Madsen has built lastfmproxy, an open source proxy server for the last.fm radio streams. By remixing Vadar’s code in LSL I was able to mashup Second Life and last.fm to build the Last Sound System, which allows you to listen to last.fm radio stations in Second Life, change stations, skip tracks and mark a track as loved. The biggest limitation is that I don’t think multiple avatars can listen to the stream concurrently. It may be possible be work around this using an MP3 stream relay server, but it would be much better if last.fm allowed people to share radio sessions for robot DJed parties in Second Life. The open source Last Sound System is freely available in Second Life here.

Wow. Great mashup Babbage! Since doing the “what I’ve been listening to” thing (which you kindly mentioned) I’ve been wanting to do exactly this. Excellent stuff. I’ll be along to Ambleside soon to pick one up!

I’ve been using this service since back when it was still called audioscrobbler. And I use foobar2000. Muha.
I’ve also tried bugging Torley to bug her dad into uploading his music onto Last.fm, especially since his fans think he’s better than Greenday and… umm…. (looks down the list of peeps I’ve never heard of) Beastie Boys.
PS. Ben Linden has a really “interesting” taste in music.

You don’t need the “secondlife” tag on a post in the Second Life Blog. It pollutes the Tag Cloud (where secondlife is currently the biggest tag).

I really need to learn to stop putting too many links in posts on WordPress blogs. Akismet doesn’t like me

I have used Globecom Jukebox for a while now. I have it streaming into SL, and given it’s open backend I have started poking around at integrating it with an in-world control.

I like Last.fm. It used to be, in the old days, that they had a nice web API, and you could get the stream URL from it, and mark a song loved, etc. Don’t know if it’s still that way though.

Education and the virtually real: Second Life…
From the same posting by David Weinberger that I just mentioned comes this: Nikolaj Nyholm talks about how Imity.com uses Second Life to prototype user interactions. Matt Bidulph has been doing Second Life mashups. You can use http, he says,…

The one guy is right. Pandora.com totally rocks. I’ve discovered several new artists via Pandora. An in-world interface to Pandora would be a lot of fun.

How exactly does that work? I tried to ‘touch’ it but nothing came up…do I have to do something special? I have a last.fm ID but not sure how to make this all work….i’m a newbie on SL in that way.
