Burning Life 2006!
Tuesday, August 15th, 2006 at 10:03 AM by: Jeska LindenFor the last three years, the Burning Life festival has helped Second Life Residents recognize the true creative potential of our ever-changing and ever-growing world. This year, Second Life’s annual homage to Burning Man is back – bigger and more imaginative than ever!
The Burning Life grounds will appear in the shape of a 12-estate island – double the size of last year’s site. Participants will be announced no later than Friday, August 25 and will have almost 1/16 of a sim to express their interpretation of Burning Life. Use of the land is free of charge and won’t count against your land tier. The specially created location echoes the spirit of Burning Man’s Black Rock Desert (and even includes textures sourced from the Playa!) – without the blood-boiling Nevada heat.
On Monday, September 18 Burning Life will disappear once again – objects and land ownership will be wiped, leaving participants and visitors with a lingering suspicion that it was all a wonderful dream…
Burning Life Details
Burning Life is about collaborative art and expression – not commerce. No sales (or other money transactions) or advertisements are allowed. The Burning Life parcels cannot be terraformed and will not capture dwell. As this is a collaborative project, participants are asked to limit their use of scripts to insure that the festival grounds offer a level performance that allows visitors to enjoy all everyone’s creations.
To Enter Lottery
Burning Life participants will be selected by lottery from those Residents who enter by posting to this thread. The deadline for entry is August 18 at 4 PM PDT/SLT. Please state your preference for an M or PG sim and if you want to be next to a particular other participant. (We can’t promise that we can meet all the requests.) Also, if you wish, select one or more of these descriptions: realistic, surrealistic, futuristic, retrospective. We may use your choice to cluster participants.
Please note that your choices will not influence your chances at winning a plot. Only one lottery entry per person; please don’t enter under alternate accounts. The winners and the coordinates of their plot will be posted in the forums on or before August 25th. Land not claimed by August 31st may be given to another participant.

The video from the Burning Life 2004 (which seems to have disapeared by the way) was influencial in my joining Second Life. Is Video Linden going to get in on the action and do some live webcasts this year ?

Does “Burning Life” follow the same theme as the real one, or is it just a “do what you like with 4096 sq m” kinda thing?

There is not an official theme for Burning Life, but feel free to follow the theme of the “real life” Burning Man if you’d like!

[...] Alrighty, I am on the Naked Pixels plot on the Burning Life sim in Second Life. It’s an amazing experience so far. There is alot of sexual activity going on here, not to mention the fact that I’m having a blast. So I’ll be live blogging this for a while. Enjoy the show. [...]

Jeska, Friday Sep 1 has come and pretty much gone, at least for SL work hours, thus marking the “official” opening of Burning Life to the general public – yet no further announcements have been made regarding those participants who made it in on the second round, nor has any publicity appeared to help make the rest of SL’s residents aware of this event.
Has anything been planned for the Welcome areas, similar to the banners created to inform the public of the Three Years of SL events? How about another forum post? And is there any chance of getting highlighted on the secondlife.com homepage? That CBS news story is over a month old and hardly “news” anymore.
I’d hate to see a lot of enthusiam and many people’s hard work simply get lost in the shuffle – I’ve spent the greater part of today mapping the twelve sims while preparing a quickguide for visitors, and I can tell you I’ve hardly seen a dozen visitors over the course of the day. It sure would’ve been nice to point people to the Burning Life sims as we head into a nice long weekend.

oookay, so now the MOTD is set appropriately, there’s a huge influx of visitors to BL06. 7 days later than it should’ve been mind.
At least it looks like Burning Life is cremated anymore…
Although I still think it was a major screw up for LL not to make any apparent effort at advertising the event. It seemed the only people who knew when it actually opened were the people building. WTF ?
If people who were in the BL06 group itself didn’t know when it opened, how is the grid at large supposed to be aware of it ?
The phrase “dropped the ball” really comes to mind on this one.
